Great video, Colin! I’m happy to see I’m not the only one who struggles to let go of a nice guitar. But I think that for most of us “budget minded” guitar players, we know that we’re only “renting” our guitars. That’s the way I feel, at least; I’ve got a couple that I’ll hold on to no matter what, but the rest of my collection is usually only one “I’ve got to have that new guitar” itch away from moving on to someone else! CHEERS!

Tough call on those final two . . . but you got there. I think I would have done the same. All I can say is what about that 1954 Custom Shop? Absolutely gorgeous - I had no idea Gibson had re-released the mid 50's P90's models. Just a beautiful piece of work, and I'll bet it's lovely to take on stage. Wow.

I love your focus of these as works of art. To me guitars are like individuals, and individually unique; even though resembling others, they each have their own combination of weight, wood and character. Letting any go is often difficult. But it's also easy to get a stable TOO full and as you said, perhaps it's time for others to enjoy a few.

Some tough choices, but I think you made the right decision, especially in keeping the 50's Standard. I have one in gold top and it is the guitar I wanted for a very long time and finally bought one this year. It sounds and plays fantastic and the neck is amazing. You kept one CS, the R4 with P90s which pickups I know you really like, so it gives you that sound and scratches the need for a CS. You also aparently really like the Epihone gold top as well, so that was no surprise and the modified Tokai is also a logical decision based on how well it sounds. I personally am not a LP Custom fan, but you seem to like it, so also a logical decicion. Congrats on letting go of some Les Pauls, they do deserve a new loving home.

@@benallmark9671 I'm really glad ! Such sustain and clarity in the tone... A huge quality guitar for a quarter price of a standard Gibson. I discovered that the chunky fat neck of this Epi Standard 50s is actually more comfortable than those modern C shaped slim necks of Fender Strats. I recommend the Epiphone Les Paul Standard 50s to anyone in search for an amazing sounding and playing Les Paul. Let's not forget that this is the little brother of Gibson Les Paul. Colin, I completely agree that the differences in sound are negligible. Not only do they sound remarkably similar to one another, but the sound and tonal qualities are subjective. I've reached a point now that I'm basically playing Japanese Tokai's and a Japanese Edwards...all that is left of my American made guitars is a 92' Hamer Sunburst; and truthfully, as nice as it is, it's not my number one "go to" guitar. By the way, I think you chose the right guitars to "cull". I really enjoy your video's; they are unique in a sea of mimicry!

My choice of keepers would be: R8, R4, Epi Custom, Lemon Drop, and Love Rock since you like it that much. I must say I liked the R8 sound the best. But that R4 - woow. You have a great taste. If you find the time, please do a video on it and do it with a clean amp and a bit of a reverb - early p90s goldtop neck pickup in a clean amp is one of those mythical tones for me, think Another Brick in the Wall solo or Gilmours newer stuff like Rattle that Lock album.

I'm taking my PA and monitor to a cool space to donate... I have a snare drum a bass and two keyboards that are also getting donated. You can't take it with you, so it's best to pass it on, especially if it connects you with other like-minded players. Good on ya, Colin...

Les Pauls aren't my cup of tea, I have a large frame and they feel too small for me, I prefer my ES 335 for that reason. I am also not a collector for collecting's sake. However, if I were in your position, my first choice as a keeper would probably be the R4. I love the P90 sound and I have an affinity for the classic colors and if I were shopping for an LP a gold top would be my first choice. Also, if a collection has reached the stage where culling is necessary, I would want to keep one that could be an heirloom. I'm glad to see you are keeping it. The Standard 50's and R8 also could qualify for that, but I prefer the R4. Other than that I would probably keep the Epi '59. My 2 cents. Good luck with your sale.

I feel 'ya man. Getting rid of guitars is always a lot harder than getting hold of 'em lol. Personally, if you're on the fence about a guitar, that always makes the decision a bit easier. I too have a similar issue of needing to get rid of one before my darling better half will allow me to get another & I've got a Midtown Custom that I've never quite gelled with so I've decided I need a flying V more & it's gotta go. I'd definitely keep the R8 & the R4 if I were you. Custom shop guitars just have a certain magic, albeit a very costly one but I also thought that LP Studio sounded fantastic so...? Tough choice my friend, tough choice.

Another great episode! Really liking the channel. Almost bought the Tokai that you have, but I fell in love with an Eastman SB59 Goldtop. A grand more expensive, but Eastman are making fine high end guitars and I already owned a T486b so I knew they were special, IMO anyway. Maybe you should give them a review if you get the chance, put them up against the Gibbo’s see what you think. Thanks for the entertainment.

Really interesting video mate. Against the flow but I would also have sold the R8. The Standard is just that....THE Standard and everything else LP is based on that. The R4 though mate is the absolute pinnacle in my view of Gibson LP ownership. That would stay with me to my grave. Oh, and what a fabulous choice of Amp to play them through. Gibson Les Paul and Marshall Bluesbreaker one of the great combos. Good luck with the sales mate.

Sad to hear the Tribute moved on! When I was on my "first Les Paul" journey and found this channel, the review on that convinced me to take the Tribute over the Studio. I got the Cherry Sunburst. And I don't regret it one bit! As for your conundrum at the end, I'd keep the Standard. OR...you could sell both and take the money to find a Gibson Les Paul that you really get on with. Anywho...thanks for your expertise! Helped me out a bunch!

I just bought an Epiphone Les paul 59 darkburst. Only my one came with the real deal AAA flametop edge to edge matched flame they so advertised but only a few recieved my guitar was unplayed and as new everything in the case bought it real cheap too so pretty happy only upgrades for me will be the Faber tp 59 tailpiece a real bone nut made from ancient stock bone the higher period correct pickup rings and if I really feel fancy I may polish the top finish and replace the indian Laurel fret board with a piece off Brazillian Rosewood now that's one fancy Epiphone in the end let's not forget the Les Paul was with Epiphone before it landed at Gibson so in some ways this is the real deal

I think of selling gear everyday. I haven’t got room for it, yet I am still buying. I don’t know if it is a sick obsession, or a genuine love for the craft. Every guitar I own I have some connection too. Every pedal, strap, tuner etc, I have some sick attachment too. I have decided today to stop trying to get rid of my gear. My children can figure where they go when I pass on. I am going to continue to enjoy the pieces I have and will buy in the future. I know I will need to build a bigger studio at some point, and I will continue to love each guitar, pedal, strap, etc…. So if it makes you happy I guess it really can’t be that bad.

Don’t get rid of the custom shops or even the USA Gibsons. The way Gibson increased prices recently the retail prices will just keep going up and up. Ten years from now you might wish you had kept the R8 when Gibson are selling them for three times todays prices. The retail price of a Gibson Les Paul Standard went up by about 10% in July. The custom shop reissues seem to have gone up by as much as 15%. PS since you love SGs, can we get a review at some time of the new Epiphone power player SG. I’d like to buy one for a grandchild but not sure.

Hi Collin, Just like you, I’m reaching for one of my SG’s far more just for all the same reasons you mentioned at the beginning of this video…. Les Pauls are indeed clunky. I was very surprised to see you have 10 of them, wow! I don’t blame you for letting half of them go. I own 2 Les Pauls here, a beautifully grained Standard and also a P90 Special, both sound so very good and I’ll probably keep these until I meet my grave. That custom R9 you own I’d definitely hold on to, it’s beautiful and sounds so very good, that Standard also sounds as good as it looks too 😊🤟

I think the R8 on the chopping block makes sense if you’re not playing it. It’s a lot of money tied up to not use. Not that I’m trying to spend your money, but since you’re more of an SG guy Colin give a 64RI a try if you want to spend the many pennies from the R8 in one place. I’m too far away to offer to let you give mine a test drive unfortunately!

Oh boy, I would've kept the Tokai as well. It's such a beautiful guitar. In fact I'm just debating to sell my lemon Epiphone 59 to get the Tokai. It just nails the look completely for me even though the Epi is a great playing and sounding guitar and according to your review has got the better wiring and pickups - aaaarggh, so torn 😂. And that R4 should be x-rated, it's so beautiful 😍

The pickups on the R8 are quite lively. I like the sound. I'll be eventually replacing my Gibsons with Epiphone alternatives. I have the Epi Firebird to replace the Gibson. I also have the Epi Moderne to replace its Gibson counterpart. I will keep the '82 30th Anniversary Goldtop that I bought back in '83. I got lucky when I bought that. I had no idea what it was, I just knew that I liked it and had to have it. I even took out a bank loan to acquire it. That one will be handed down to my kids to sell after I'm gone one day. Now I'm off to your Reverb page to see what you decided to sell. Edit: I see that they're all gone. I kind of expected that. Now I'll never know, lol.

Like you say they are ALL a great perv. I have no clue how you keep up on them all but guess the channel helps loads. I have 12 guitars in total (new recent Gretsch purchase which I don't need arriving) and much as I can get as intoxicated as anyone in a shop and have sold a few for more and a few for less I guess dedication to hobbies comes in and out .....Tough LOL.....LP wise I have a Gibson Studio and an Epi Std and both just fine. I let my Gibby std go as never seeing the light of day.........You may laugh but at home, a simple pedal board into an affordable amp sim into a Roland Mobile Cube (flat response keyboard input) is heaps of experimentation for me currently........ Things change as and when of course.

12 is a good number it think but once it starts growing beyond that you so tend to lose perspective a bit! 🤣 My home rig is a small board with just a soul food, fuzz ditto looper, and blackstar HT1HR head with headphones. I generally have about 6 guitars there on rotation but Les Paul's never stay there for long.

I bought an R8 Plaintop when they first came out...and were affordable new. Easily one of the best made, best looking and best sounding guitars I've ever owned. I just never bonded with it and sold it to a friend. I thought I'd miss it...hey it was a Custom Shop....nope. I do have to add that finished on your's is stunning. Had a used '94 Standard...same thing. For me the LP is a odd thing, if I don't really bond with the thing...I just end up never playing it. Funny enough in 2020 I did an impulse online buy of a new LP Classic in Honeyburst...best LP I've ever owned or played. It had to have been built either right before or after a slowdown in work during the early days of the pandemic...everything on it was perfect. The plaintop was so well matched, before the finish began settle in the seem, I had to take it outside into bright sunlight to see the separation clearly between the two pieces. The 62 pickups in them sound great to my ears and it comes wired to split the coils and to do Greeny's out of phase. It's a keeper.
