This piece, "Les Voix Humaines," (The Human Voices) stands out to me as one of the greatest Baroque pieces I've heard. It's not complex or particularly innovative but something about it resonates with me inside and I can't explain it. And Marais' title makes me reflect on the nuance and beauty of the human voice which he seems to be alluding to with his musical phrases and gestures. Enjoy and thanks to Craig Trompeter for his gorgeous playing on the viola da gamba! Full recital, watch it here: • Marin Marais Full reci...

Oh my god, that was so tasteful and boldly played at the same time. The dissonances! The dialogue of the different arpeggio styles (plucked vs. bowed), the subtle dynamic changes etc.! At this level music does not feel like an interpretation of something already existing or a historical reconstruction, it is just there and gets you. Thanks so much!

As another gamba player, I know how difficult it can be to accompany Marais and I just want to note how absolutely sensitive, gorgeous and creative Brandon's theorbo playing is. Not to mention Craig's spectacular gamba playing. Beautiful beautiful playing of this wonderful piece.

I just heard this last night in Seattle and I noticed that the theorbo player was not quite right, he blamed on a G string that wasn't working right but I think he was just not as good as this player.

Hey Brandon I've got a question. Is this pairing of instruments something that was common back then? Like if I had gone to a concert of this time period, could I expect to see these two instrument together? Or are these instruments simply very flexible and can replicate the instruments that likely would have been used? Essentially, if you had a band back in the day this came out, what instrument would everyone play?
@brandonacker
@brandonacker 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes the gamba and theorbo were a great combination in the baroque period. They are both members of the "Continuo" family which include instruments which played from the bass line in chamber music and in opera. The continuo family includes many instruments: lute, theorbo, guitar, harpsichord, organ, cello, viol, harp, bassoon and more. This specific piece your hearing by Marais comes from a series of books published for the viola da gamba which takes the melody. Then Marais provides a bass line which could be played by one continuo instrument I mentioned or an assortment of them. It's really up to the performers. In our performance, we loved the sound of just theorbo playing, and improvising over, the bass line.
