www.ted.com Lesley Hazleton sat down one day to read the Koran. And what she found -- as a non-Muslim, a self-identified "tourist" in the Islamic holy book -- wasn't what she expected. With serious scholarship and warm humor, Hazleton shares the grace, flexibility and mystery she found, in this myth-debunking talk from TEDxRainier.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at www.ted.com/translate.

Daan892 Yes, It takes about 15-20 years to become a scholar of Islam. Children start with memorization of Quran. After that they start with Arabic grammar then classical Arabic. and study lot of other things of Arabic language. While studying Arabic they also learn lot of thing about Islam parallely. After mastering Arabic language they again start studying Quran and Hadith in Arabic and in their own language (here in India mostly Urdu). They also study many other fields like fiqh, logic,science of hadith, history, tradition and many more. And I think same goes for most parts of world. So scholar do have knowledge but people just don't ask them. There is a gap between scholars and common man nowadays. Btw there are many scholars in my own family.

Ibn Kathir historically has the best Tafsir. Islam is not about race/ethnicity since no one holds superiority or is 'God's chosen people'. Knowledge and wisdom comes from all walks of life in all countries when it comes to scholars in Islam. Read Muhammud's last sermon.

This woman is amazing! She helped change my view on Islamic faith. I loved when she said that a perverse person will seek out whatever they want in a holy book to find what they need to proclaim their view for or against a faith (and she was talking both about islamaphobes and fundamentalists). She is someone we should admire. I think if everyone truly tried their best to read and understand all faiths in this world, there would be less hate.

I feel quite incredulous that anyone could think the talk was a 'hidden mockery'; to me it felt like she truly has an open mind, treating this delicate subject with a lot of respect and love. It felt like she was trying to open other people's minds, and show non-Muslim's that they are as mis-guided as some radical Muslims. We need more people like her, not people throwing verbal or physical stones from various sides. With more open and respectful minds, we could live in harmony.

Exactly! In Islam men and women are "differently equal" and "equally different". Islam do not deny the difference between men and women nor do Islam deny the equality between men and women. Islam acknowledges the equality and difference between men and women. Whereas, feminists almost deny or/and ignore the difference between men and women.

simply going to say that's the animal in people. Humans are apes my friend its our ability to surpass this attribute that drive use to see these events as disgusting. They are accompanied by many other people of many other races/religions. To simply suppress an idea or a religion based on the thought every human thinks the same or then honestly most religious redirect would dictate the hole image of everyone that fallows. In retrospect chajinji it isnt your faith that makes you beautiful but what you obtain from it. Peace for people is possible as long as we all know we are all people and are treated as such tell that happens bad things will always happen. this very same reasoning is why i have always seen religion as a hindrance. People get fixated on there thoughts being better then the last creating conflict previously to ever meeting.

@coldmow
@coldmow 8 жыл бұрын
+bltcrunchy I hope that "YES!" you shouted wasn't for the sense of relief of not having to bother with the Quran anymore. Cuz you still do. The Quran says about the Prophet pbuh: "and we have sent you only but as a mercy to the whole world" The whole world, meaning even you have to adopt the good manners and behavior of the Prophet and his book. No it doesn't mean you should become Arab now Yes there are things that nobody really knows, but you still have an obligation (or it's best to) to read this supernatural book. You are human. Here are some good reasons to read from it: - One fifth, now coming close to one fourth of the human race believes it's from the one that is free of all, perfect, unlimited, omnipotent, omniscient and more real than anything we can 'just' see: The Almighty, nonphysically present in every atom at every single point in time. - It came to CONFIRM the old scriptures and old practices of the people of old. From Cherokee Indian elders to southern African tribes to Australian aboriginals, all confirmed this. Mystery befits Him, because you need to earn it to receive knowledge. - Linguistically it's no less than a masterpiece of the highest order, with every single word present with even it's own individual purpose. Forget words, even the single letters themselves. Ordered in a fashion that is Godlike. No human would be able to make something close to it and maintain an alibi with all the people of a whole country to be able to say "I got it from our maker". Read the Quran with your own doubts whether it can really be from your own description of your God, and do some research in what Muslims say about those so called hate verses. CUZ THERE ARE NONE for God's sake.

As always a patient objective loving approach reveals the truth, which usually seems to come to the conclusion in most religions to Love God and be ever helpful in thought and deed and care deeply for your surroundings!

I don't regard myself to have faith in Islam nor do I believe Allah exists by FAITH, but the Qur'an offers me logical proof of believing that the Qur'an cannot be written by a man in the 7th century who was illiterate and in a society known to be uneducated

@Medifro I didn't assume it only uses one style; that it DOESN'T was part of my point (which either went right over your head or to which you paid little attention). The method in deciding what is figurative and what is literal varies according to what the reader WANTS the text to say. This speaker wanted it to be nice and Westerner-friendly.

@Salladsdressing Well, keep in mind that when she said that, she was referring to certain sections and phrases. From what I understand, her point was that the Quran was very ambiguous in some places, and very well defined in others. Furthermore, in my (albeit fairly limited) experience, the bible, as well as all other holy works of literature I've come across, are the same way. They tend to have sections that make lots of sense, and other sections that make no sense at all.

you can't know basics of an Islamic state except if it simulates Prophet Muhammad's regimes that he built. First state, that he did, accept every one. he wrote a constitution for the people of the city "Madina" was included Muslims, Jews and Berbers. you can look it in the Internet and understand it. Isis in Iraq is manufacture of Oil countries.

So glad to learn that the Qur'an, Allah's perfect description of himself, is only truly understandable to him (by Lesley's account, time: 7:12, "...Only god knows the true meaning..."). Almost makes one wonder why Allah allowed it to be written as, according to Lesley's account, it does not enlighten anyone. Nonetheless, it is easily used for divisive purposes. This is somewhat less than one would hope from a perfect document as it makes it seem only perfect for Allah, and decidedly imperfect for mere men.

Hadith isn't the Qur'an my friend. She clearly said "There is no mention in the Qur'an of 72 virgins" I don't know where you got many authentic hadith, there is only 1 in Tirmidhi and that Hadith isn't considered a strong one because of the chain. And of course, Allah knows best.
