These birds bring back fond memories for me. I remember many a trip as a kid with my parents to my Grandmother's house and seeing red wing black birds sitting on the fence lines of the farms in central and southern Illinois.

Here in Chicagoland, they are a bit of a pest. The dump my tube feeders, then eat it off of the ground, and bully the smaller birds. They flock with other black birds, and this spring, I saw a mockingbird amung them! Despite all of that, they are still welcome here in my bird sanctuary. Thank you for yet another wonderful video. I was confronted by a male red wing blackbird in early spring. I didn’t realize I’ve entered its territory.. and the bird came to me right away flapping its wings and showing the red and yellow patches., I left the place immediately and went to a different section of the park, I was so amazed by its bravery and boldness. Beautiful birds.

I’ve liked these birds since I was little. They’re easy to find in marshy areas with cattails in Pennsylvania. I grew up with a story that told of a witch in the woods who could turn herself into a red winged blackbird. Now, I sometimes make up stories about her for my grandchildren.

That was a surprise! I had no idea the females were so different. I assumed the male birds I observed with less distinct red markings were the females. Live and learn, thanks.

My favorite part: around the 5 minute mark. The calls, mating habits, and especially the 🪺 nest, with the eggs. Your voice is soothing too, you pause when you speak, a lost art, the art of the pause. Hearing the male Red Wing Blackbird's song near my home is my definite sign of spring

As a child, I fondly remember waking up to their beautiful song. I have since then loved these birds. Among my favorites.

I live in Southern Ontario, Chatham to be specific. I live on the river Thames, yes I'm in Canada, lol. The red winged black birds are very abundant by the river here. We seem to have the California variety of bird here though. There is no sign of any yellow on their wings at all. I love walking by the river and listening to the males sing to their girlfriends. Thank you for your wonderful videos.

I was raised in areas that had red winged black birds 🐦, I dearly love ❤ to listen to them. There music is tranquil to me. I'am almost 67 years old and still have the same affect on me and recalled all my fondest childhood memories, A BIG THANK YOU.

As a Moderator on the bird cam channel @Bird Watching HQ, I have watched and studied Red-wings every day for three years. I particularly liked the part of your video about the various calls they make, which are little-known. Did you know there is a swamp in South Carolina called "Congaree" which is probably named for the male's mating calls? Not only are the females a puzzle to identify, but second year juveniles are still immature and not completely black.. They have red wing bars but have to keep them hidden most of the time. Sometimes people think they are Starlings instead. By their third year they finally change to sleek black and red.

I absolutely ❤️ rwb birds. Here in New England we get to watch and listen to them all year.

I liken them to tiny Crows with a "Napoleon Complex".

Growing up in NYS saw them, especially in fields. First to arrive in spring, among first to leave in fall. Love their calls. Humorous to watch males land on a stalk of something, and having miscalculated it's strength, watch as the stem and bird bend backyard, and bird disappears. Seems surprised. 🥰 Very attractive birds.

I love their songs and calls. The music of the cattail marshes make me grateful to be alive and to live in such a beautiful place.

I met a family of these birds after moving to the Tennessee Appalachian area. They slept in an antique chimney, hung out in a very old apple tree, and foraged food on the very buggy ground and a table covered with birdseed on the front porch. The doves were more aggressive, piggy, than the Cardinals, woodpeckers, and what i now understand to be the female red winged blackbirds, who preferred eating below the table anyway. We loved looking at each other! Maybe they loved the wild-bird birdseed i refreshed in the early mornings and early afternoons, more than they loved me back, but it was loads of relaxing fun watching the gorgeous red winged males, and females, as they went about their days. The ratio of male to female was about five males to fifteen females? Until watching your video, I thought the females were sparrows! Thank you so much... 🐓🐦🦅🦉🐦♥️

First, I enjoy your channel even though I really am not a true birder. Second, I work outdoors 75% of my day. Third, These birds are definitely territorial! Yesterday I was going about my work when 4 times I was divebombed by a male RWB! He came so close to my face that I could feel his wings! I notified my coworkers that they should beware! Long story short, it was a good thing that It was sunny day and I was wearing a hat cause the next time I walked through the area I felt a thump on the back of my head! It may sound a little crazy but I kinda feel privileged to have been attached by one of this beautiful bird!

My grandparents lived near a large lake, and I got to visit them often. Always a wonderful time! The call of the redwing blackbird transports me back to the many times I was with my grandparents. It’s always a favorite!

I have seen many red wing blackbirds but never as a migrating flock. That must be awesome.

Wow, now I see how lucky I am to live by a wetlands area where Redwing Blackbirds nest and I can watch them from a short distance and listen to them.

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to see my first red wing here in NC! Such a beauty!

Awesome, I've a young one who comes around with the wife and 2 kids already, he spots them as they eat! We went to the states once in Nov. to Texas and my best part was seeing one, these guys sing Spring! 🌈🙋🎠🕊🔆

I was sooo glad to see a video on this bird! When I first married my hubby (who is from the southern US) and he relocated to WV, where I am from, he got to see new wildlife. We have these birds everywhere in our development. He thought at first they were Orioles haha. I still tease him about that. The birds are very pretty, love to visit my bird feeder, and have a sound that is hard to imitate, but very recognizable. Thanks for showcasing them! 😁

Red wing black birds are probably my favorite. I love birds in general, but these guys have a special place in my heart. There are are huge flocks of them at the Walmart where I live and they bring me insane amounts of joy.

My dad and I had one dive bomb right near our faces while we were kayaking on the river the other day. We must’ve been by a nest... he wasn’t messing around.

These birds will spend hours following you around scolding you at our local game farm that has a lot of ponds.

I lived in Florida as a kid and went fishing allot in ponds and lakes and have Loved there song ever since. My Favorite Medium sized bird for sure!

Lesley this bird is so close to my heart. When I was very young I lived on Vancouver Island and attended a Montessori School. We used to do art work that was above what most kids got to do. The beach was not far from the school so grade 1 we went to the beach to collect sea glass; when we got back we would make mosaics, but in grade three the students did seed mosaics and I well remember the book shelf pattern was a Red Wing Blackbird. I could hardly wait to get to grade three so I could make one. Alas I got sent to public school and it never happened, but for the rest of my life the RW Blackbird has been so special. There are a lot where I live now and I am always happy to hear and see the Males arrive and start practicing their pickup lines for the arrival of the females. The difference between the two is striking, but since she gets to sit on. The nest her markings are perfect. I love how brave the little males are, nothing scares them. I'm sorry it took so long for me to watch this but I find myself easily moved to tears of nostalgia as I move forward in life and I needed to take a deep breath. By the way your videos have really inspired my wife to walk with me to see the variety of birds in our river valley.

This is my daughter's favorite bird. We have two resident males, Arthur and Lancelot. They appear to have had some babies because we have seen two young ones around the yard recently. I love the video and learned a lot. Love your bird videos! ❤🐦

They're very common here in south-central Wisconsin, and on a walk around the local nature areas, it's common to see them perched on reeds and cattails. And they sure can be aggressively territorial! You'll be walking or jogging along minding your own business and suddenly "kik-kik-kik THWACK!" one will decide you were too close and whack you on the top of your head. They're not big enough to do any real damage, but it's certainly startling if you didn't realize there was a nest nearby.

I grew up along a marsh and the sight and sound of Red wing in early spring was so so welcomed and is as sweet as honey to this day.

Red-winged blackbirds remind me of my late Grandpa and my childhood home.

I live close to a marshy lake and we go out on our boat quite a bit in Summer here in North Dakota. This sound is so Summer to me. Interesting that the males don't really fight for one female and that they are not like so many other birds who do so much to attract one mate and stay with her. Nice video, Thank You!

When I'm walking by the lake, they're always there "scolding" me as if I'm a threat 😂 I didn't know those sounds were warning sounds. I always once saw 3 of them team up and chase out an osprey! Didn't know they employed the polygenous strategy, that's so unique

These birds have a beautiful song. They show up around may/June where I live , and leave as the weather starts to cool .

I'm from east-central Pennsylvania, USA and LOVE when these birds come back in late February to March! When I hear their call, then I KNOW it's Spring! Have never been attacked by the males but they DID warn me with their alarm call!! Their song lifts my spirits and assures me that Spring is FINALLY here!! LOVE your bird knowledge and keep up the GREAT videos!! I wish I could fly like a bird!!

We see a ton of them here in Jacksonville Florida, always always on cattails or in marshes. They stick out like a sore thumb. Very good looking birds.

That’s the sound of spring, the sweet song of red and yellow wing blackbirds. I will appreciate and cherish every northern springtime until my demise.

I see these birds every day lately (I do live near wetlands in Canada) and it's really fun watching the males chase females around and the females having a different song in response. Everything in this video has been exactly my experience with red wing blackbirds. I really liked this video and it makes me like blackbirds more, even though sometimes I wish I could find birds that aren't so common.

The females come to my feeders all the time. I thought they were sparrows. 😂

I got to meet my favorite mockingbird pair's fledgeling today. You should do a video on them. Graceful flyers on par with blue jays, but a little quicker. Most people know them for their aggressive disposition, but I have found them to be among the easiest to befriend. There is a lot of individual variation in attitude, agility, their white wing bar, and the wing display they do. I knew one that shrugged her shoulders and another that you reach out to his front. And of course, the singing.

The Redwing Blackbird is by far my Favorite bird of North America. They’re call is very distinctive and beautiful. I can’t wait to hear them in the spring knowing that summer is coming.

Every year we have a small group, about 25-30, that nest and breed for the summer. There are 3 types, Red Wing Black birds, Brown Headed Cow birds, and the Common Grackles. They always seem to come as a group. North central Wisconsin for those interested in geography. They have their young and visit the feeder then leave. They mostly feed off the ground. Cracked corn and sun flower seeds.

There was an imaginary line in the field at the edge of the garden, between the barn and the river, which red-winged blackbirds rarely went beyond: they would perch mostly in the trees by the riverbank.

These guys are always all over my backyard...they are like grackles and are kinda brave and will hang out while I’m outside 🥰

These are one of my favorite birds! I love all songbirds but these guys bring back memories of summer because of their song. You should definitely try to be near them and experience them on a hot, calm day. Lay down, take a nap and listen to them, it's very calming and beautiful.

I've had my run ins with these boys. Pecked on the head while riding a bike and recently one doesn't like where i park my car. Living on the lake in Toronto with my Red winged neighbours can be challenging.

The songs of the RWBs in this video sound very different from the RWBs in Oregon. Ours sound much more musical.

Last year we got a male in a populated suburb. It lives at the community pond. We love him!

I was using ebird to identify birds by song and it misclassified a red wing as a kind of raptor. I looked up and saw him. He seemed offended. :-) But, now we can provide feedback to ebird to help it get better. I was sure this time.

I have not seen one since I was a kid, 60 years ago" we use to have them in our field and they put in a bypass and took our home also , they put in a wall mart above the bypass and gave them a tax break , and of course after a few years they moved out and took over more land and put in another one "bigger " and better. I am now a 70 year old Viet Nam Vet ,and I have not seen one since the 60 ' s! , amazing, I wonder why?

They remind me of soldiers walking around the sidewalk stalking the seeds with mourning doves. When the yellow headed blackbirds show up it's a cool sight.

When we returned to the rice country of Arkansas from a career in Colorado, the Red-winged Blackbirds welcomed us home. Their calls represent home for us and now they often visit our backyard in large numbers. Two spring's ago, we had a Yellow Head come in and feed with the Red-wing flock. It was quite a treat.

The redwing blackbird call always makes me remember camping trips. And they remind me that spring is coming. I love the male’s call. I didn’t know the female’s call before this video. I will listen for them next time I am out there.

Spent my youth watching this beautiful bird,love their song

I love their calls. I grew up in Indiana next to a woods with a creek and a meadow so we had many species of birds all year round. Their call always reminds me of home.

This was my favorite bird as a child, I remember assembling and painting a model---like a model airplane. I had not seen one in over 55 years, until out for a run in NW Austin, TX. Running past a retention pond near a minor highway, the sight of the plumage brought me back to my childhood in a flash. I now take every opportunity to tell photographers I see along a nearby creek about the chance of catching a shot of one of these little guys along the highway.

We have a wetland where I live and the redwings love it there, I've even been able to watch their courtship dance since they've gotten so used to me walking near them.

A couple of Rwbb's have recently taken up residence here at my Alabama home. I never knew much about them until now. When i hear their calls it puts my soul in a peaceful place.

Their calls remind me of my grandma’s house, and watching them fly around and sit on the cattails in her lake. Wonderful video!

Saw and heard these all the time where I grew up in Michigan. Been in California for 16 years and only saw the male bird a couple times in April/May in Petaluma. They make another singing sound kind of hum or something that is really smooth and ear pleasing which makes it my favorite bird.
