I like watching crows, they're smart animals. Once saw a crow trying to crack open a walnut. After pecking at it without success, it decided to try picking it up, flying up and dropping it on an asphalt road below. After that failed attempt it sat looking at the nut for a minute. After several cars had passed, it picked up the walnut and placed it in the road. After more cars had passed, the crow would adjust the location of the nut until finally a truck managed to break it open enough for the crow to peck out the nut inside. What an amazing animal. Since then I've grown to like crows. I know why they harass the hawks, but I like hawks as well.

I had a pet crow as a Kid. He would dip pieces of his morning donut in coffee. Best pet I ever had. He would ride on my shoulder down to catch the morning school bus and be waiting in a tree right over the stop when I got dropped off.

All corvids are fascinating but crows hold a special place in my heart. Growing up we had a "rescued" baby crow that lived free flying around our house for twenty years. I could write a book on his antics, but on trick he taught himself was to ring our doorbell whenever he got hungry. Obligingly, we would bring him something tasty to eat.

In Australia crows wait by water holes for animals to get a drink and the crows proceed to groom and remove ticks from the animal drinking water. That's a very necessary service they provide and it's super smart. Instead of looking for food they wait for it to come to them

Hi Lesley! I am 59 years old and have crow encounters throughout my entire life. They do recognize people and tend to show up at important times in my family's lives. My kids have grown up watching how the crows interact with each other and with us. I am passing this down to my granddaughter now. Just as crows have strong family bonds, they also have recognized my children throughout the years. They are so smart and loving. I really appreciate your corvid videos. I feed a bunch of birds in my back yard including scrub jays, blue jays, Stellar's Jays, magpies as well as crows and ravens (occasionally!). The crows don't necessarily come to my feeder they just stay back at the tree line then watch where the busy busy Jays cache their nuts. LOL I love those crows, they are body guards for the rest of the birds at the feeder for most of the year. I've watched them chase off raptors and keep the neighborhood cats on their toes. It's a bird eat egg world during breeding season but for the rest of the year things seem to be so peaceful.

Hello fellow Crow lover!! I am known by my friends & family as WOMAN WHO STANDS WITH CROWS. I absolutely love these marvelous birds. I feed mine & they talk to me & I talk to them. Their so very very intelligent.

I started feeding 2 pairs of crows last autumn near my house. Late spring they brought their fledglings- 4 of them for each pair! Later I learned that is unusual for them to be able to keep all their babies alive. I like to think that those scraps of meat and seed I kept giving them helped at least a few crows in my neighborhood. They aren't afraid of me landing just in front of me or walking very close to me waiting for some food. 😊

Thank you for this. I live in Chatham, Ontario and every autumn we have hundreds of thousands of these beauties come to our city. Many people are distressed about this and kill hundreds of them every year, but this does not deter my friends, they still keep coming back. I have started taking food with me when I go for my walks so that I can feed some of them. I have made friends with some of them and can even tell them apart when they come for food. I am an artist, a sculptor actually, and I have just finished a piece of a crows head, using a small blue sapphire for the pupil. My best work yet. I wear it around my neck quite often.

Hello Lesley! I love your videos, but you already know that. Crows are my friends here in rural PA. I invite them to roost and nest around my property as they are the BEST defenders of my chickens against Hawks. Since the crows don't tolerate hawks, they drive them off and my free-ranging chickens don't have to fear the skies :) The Feathered Ape... aptly named :) I am happy to see your channel continue to grow! Finally... will they eat mice? Your information about them being song-birds is VERY interesting! Thank you again and again...

I love our crows so much!!! Especially the one that I call "the watchdog" he sits on the wire outside our kitchen window and always appears around suppertime. I know its him (or her) because they have a funny little feather that sticks up out of their wing. I always throw my meat scraps out to them. I purposely leave extra meat on the bones for them 😉🖤🖤🖤 They are beautiful, smart and hilarious birds!

I have had a bonded pair and their single sidekick hanging out around my house for over two years now. They watch and listen closely for when I open the patio door. There may be just one standing guard who’ll call to the others if I toss out scraps or peanuts. I swear they recognize me and know my voice.

I have been fortunate to have befriended a family of 5 common Crows for nearly 2 years now. We became acquainted when the parents started coming around with their triplet fledglings. I could tell them apart because the chicks were smaller than the Parents. Now 2 yrs later I can only tell who one bird is. I think it's either the Mother or Father because he/she is slightly bigger than the others and has one chest feather that has stuck out all summer. She's the one that's in charge of keeping an eye out for my food offerings at my place. I named her Scruffy. At first they were extremely wary of my presence, I couldn't even peek out the corner of my window and they would fly away. After a few weeks, they allowed me to view them from the window. At approximately 9-9:30 every morning Scruffy comes and begs for food landing on the big Maple tree out the window of my house. I feed them table scraps, cheap dog kibble, and a chuck of cheap canned dog food. Oh and I get an awesome deal on 5# shell peanuts at Sam's Club. (Half the price than bird centers) they love those peanuts. It's amazing because with only one bird keeping an eye on the place, all of a sudden there's the whole damn family showing up after foods put out. It's winter so I can't hear their caws but I'm certain they're all called in. Speaking of Caws, I was working in the yard the other day and man they are loudmouths, cawing back and forth throughout the whole neighborhood. Oh and I do have a crow call and I do use it on them time to time. They usually shut up when I use it lol. It is said a Crows caw can be heard up to a mile away, I believe it. Oh one last thing, many years ago I was walking my dog in the back acreage and the Crows were raising hell at a Redtail Hawk. I startled the Hawk and it dropped a large fledgling Crow. It was already bloodied and dead. So what goes around comes around and the Crows know that.

Crows in captivity have been able to speak human language, quite often. There are also stories of crows in the wild who learned human language or even whistling. There is a very famous story of a crow that learned to say "here boy, here boy" and then whistle by imitating the owner of a dog. Over time, many people in the town reported not only witnessing the crow do this, the crow was able to actually get dogs to follow it frequently. I thought this was an urban legend, but I looked into it extensively, and it does seem to be true; happened in the midwest of the U.S. in the 70's. There are also countless videos of wild crows inventing games, my favorite being the Russian surfing crow, who found some piece of debris and was filmed using it repeatedly to basically sled down a snowy roof. This is 100% fact and the video is on KZfaq. Wild crows also have distinct memories of individual people. While much of this is hearsay, I have MANY stories I could tell, there are well documented cases like the little girl who was brought thousands of "gifts" from the wild crows she fed. Also a video on KZfaq. Clearly, I love these birds, lol.

Dear Lesley, I love your videos, your facts are beautifully presented and your Canadian accent is so very charming. In Australia we also have crows, ravens and other song birds. The East Coast magpie (found in my home town, Sydney) has the MOST beautiful song. Once your local magpie knows you it will consider your a friend, woe betide you if they dislike you. My local magpie knows me and I occasionally give it ground mince as a treat though I try not to feed it too much. One day, when this dreadful pandemic ends, visit Sydney, you'll love our birds, too.

A few years back, in Massachusetts, there were several crows being killed on roads. They determined from paint samples from beaks that trucks were hitting them. Several experts determined the sentries were good at warning ca', can, but not so good at truck, truck. One of my favorite birds. They're not afraid of my farm. I feed them, along with other birds.

I love our crows!! They are compassionate and intelligent. We feed our birds and squirrels. So they are use to us being around. Last year, my brother had a knee replacement and had to walk outside with a walker. It was February and into March so I feed berries and nuts. My brother and I went out to exercise his knee, and the crows were in the yard. They could see his struggle. When we returned, there were berries and nuts on the back steps!! These gifts, continued as long as my brother used his walker!!!! About six weeks!! One day there was a feather and a shell! Another day, a sprig of holly! Those crows were and remain unselfish and they observe their environment closely.💞💞💞

For me the most interesting fact about crows is that you can find them all over the world in the most unusual places. I found many of them in the city of Tokyo Japan. And also down in Costa Rica. They are everywhere because they are survivors.

I feed a family of crows every morning. This morning I had some new crows show up, very big with small ones. I had not seen these before, and was amazed at how big they were!

I adore crows. Our pair often makes a call that sounds like meowing. Pretty neat. We leave peanuts out for them and they see us bringing out treats and start calling, and they know our cars too. I usually know when my husband is coming home and is on the curving road leading to our house... because the crows start calling long before he even pulls in the driveway. They’re awesome. I do wish we had hooded crows. Those guys are hilarious how they stir up trouble between cats by pulling on their tails. Our American crows do that as well, but not as often. Anyway, lovely video as always.

Corvids are such awesome birds! The most intelligent of them all. It is so ridiculous when people complain that crows eat eggs and nestlings, as if they never fried an egg of eat some damn chicken... Hypocrites!

A while ago, after learning how smart crows and ravens are, I started gaining appreciation and respect for these birds and I think corvids are definitely among my favorite kinds of birds (I wish I could befriend the ones that live in my neighborhood, or is it I who lives in their hood?). There's a local cemetery with a large crow population. The place is beautifully landscaped, with hundreds of older maple trees and oaks. It covers about 45 acres in all. It's very beautiful in Autumn. Anyway, the resident crows and squirrels have lost most of their fear of humans. I sometimes arrive with a large bag of unsalted peanuts. Within a few minutes, word has spread, and I'm surrounded by crows and squirrels. I love it.

There's a cemetery near my home that's always full of crows. Sometimes I walk down there to just sit, watch & listen to them. That's how I learned how complex their calls are. The sounds they make vary wildly. Dare I say it's the crow "language."

Intelligent, playful, thoughtful animals. Wonderful listening to your video, thank you for trying to explain to people the unfair rap that crows have received over the years. I discovered a grounded crow in the spring, contacted a Corvid rehab center, was able to successfully capture and deliver him to the rehab facility, he's doing well and almost ready for release. I felt like it was one of the most important things I had ever accomplished.

Crows help clean up carrion/roadkill. I saw/read that they 'chase' squirrels into traffic hoping for fresh squirrel pancake. Is this a fact? They are smart so it wouldn't surprise me.

The guy with the hooked beak in the first minute is interesting. Surprising how much variation there is in beak shape. Sydney, NS has a well known raven with a big hooked beak.

Hi Lesley: Thanks for this! I love Crows and would love to have one for a friend. They don't come around our yard much, Whenever I see them I try to act friendly toward them. The one study where the researchers wearing masks were unpleasant to the crows, and generations of crows attacked anyone wearing the mask. In other words crows that were not even hatched yet during the experiment knew to be aggressive to anyone wearing the mask. I always smile and acknowledge them as equals. Maybe one day they will stop in to say hi...

Thank you for this information about crows. For a number of years I lived on a farm with a thousand pecan trees which was an attraction to crows. We had them in abundance, in hundreds or thousands. They are clearly intelligent and resourceful.

I adore crows. There is a type here, in the Yucatan, that sprints along the Carribean coast and has a deep melodious whistle as well as other vocals. Sometimes they fly just over the beach, one noisily chatting to another. When they land to grab a few of the teaming insects in the seaweed, the chattering continues. Other times they are silent. They've begun to trust me a little as I sit quietly in a beach chair admiring them. These are scruffy seeming in comparison with the sleekness of the American crows you showed and with whom I'm most familiar. They add immeasurably to my day, every day.

I enjoyed your video about crows. I happen to love crows. I feed three crows daily; Buck, Delores and Junior. My cats are finicky, and the crows love the leftover wet cat food. Most mornings, before I get up, I hear their loud calls outside. I feed birds in my backyard, and once I'm outside, the three crows sit in the big nearby tree watching me. When I start to put out the cat food, they move to within two feet of me. I move slowly while putting the food on the ground, and of course tell each of them good morning and how beautiful they are. I enjoy watching them fill their beaks with food and then fly away to eat it. I sincerely enjoy these beautiful crows.
