Great horn.! I especially love the sequence beginning at 1:01. Great! As a kid I always thought of it as a "halloween horn" because of its weird, haunting sound. Was may favorite until the K5LA came along.

I heard a RS5T today on a NS Dash 8. these horn sound great.

This is the horn that was used in the underground part of the Garry's Mod map "gm sunset gulch."

Im glad NS still uses these!

@CSXtrackworker The horn was originally a variable orifice S5TR, but apparently N&W had a preference for full orifice horns. All the orifices that weren't already #2 (.125") got drilled to .125" or even bigger in a lot of cases. I don't recommend going bigger .125" however. It doesn't improve the sound in any way and could possibly cause premature wear of the power chambers.

@mike9889 If you are still interested there is a Leslie RS5T on Ebay right now. I bought my first Leslie S5T a few months ago and, even though I am working on getting her back to full glory, she still sounds good.

Listening to that it's easy to imagine a black SD-45 coming at you rear first, leading 4 others on a coal train. Nice!

I think, the manifold is S-horn, while the horn is RS-horn because it's have spike backcap instead of tab backcap or round backcap. Or, all horn and manifold are original with the tag, but is has aluminium tab backcap, and unreliable so they purchased the newer power chamber and that was the RS power chamber.

I don't know specifics and I'm sure it depends on locomotive type, but I would imagine they are probably well over 100 gallons on most locomotives.

@sgtfhrn Thank's for the info. Glad I did not go ahead and do it. Nothing beat's the sound of a Leslie Horn. I would not trade my ex reading/conrail Leslie RS-3L for any thing. Nathan's just don't compare. Your horn in this video sound's great! This is the next horn on my list to obtain!

@mike9889 Well, I got this one on ebay a few years ago. Leslie 5s are getting a bit harder to find, but they still show up on ebay fairly often. Just keep your eyes open. Not every one will necessarily sound exactly like this one, but if it's in good shape inside and out, there's no reason for it not to be just as nice. Good luck!

Makes me feel like im traveling through a underground tunnel somewhere in Arizona.. Weird, huh?

The tanks were charged to about 140psi at the beginning of the run by and of course the pressure dropped as the horn was blown.

I just hope it still works. It has been sitting outside on my dads freinds barn for a while.

@gaycowboy31 Now if I were to own a nathan horn, I would own a P-5. It sound's so much better than the Nathan K series. I run my RS-3 on the truck now, but I will soon mount the Leslie RS5 when I build a small air wing to put in front of it. It will be too much drag on the truck for everyday driveing.. The RS3 I have is former reading railroad, and the RS5 I have is of Kansas City Southern heritage, but the horn's are set up for N&W style running. I have to repaint them, but I am glad I got em!

120 psi is plenty. I'd guess that by the end of the run by, the tanks were probably down to about 90 psi or less and the horn is still plenty loud.

oh thanks. I have a compressor that can do 120 psi. I think that should be good enough. I dont want the whole valley down below to hear it anyways lol.

I love this sound. Simply amazing. DO you know where I can buy a Leslie just like this? Or a similar sounding horn? I'm dying to get my hands on one and hook up an airline to it. Any information is MUCH appreciated.

@78terrell Did someone tell you the horn was an "RS5T/MD" or is that actually stamped into the horn's tag? Officially, there's no such thing as an RS5T/MD that I know of. However a lot of former N&W Leslie 5s were stamped with "MOD" in various places on the manifolds and bells and sometimes even the heads. The story is that this was done as N&W MODified the horns by drilling out all the orifices to full size. My only guess is that they may have stamped yours with MD instead of MOD.

@gaycowboy31 I only collect Leslie horn's. Although I do like nathan horn's, to me leslie horn's are the king. I just picked up a Leslie RS5t of former KCS heritage. Although your M3 is a nice horn.
