It's not the 75bhp engine. It's the 60bhp 8v version of the engine. (I can tell from the manifold). I think its the Expression trim. (Bottom of the range). That's why it doesn't have the two individual moving sliding chairs in the back. No AC, manual mirrors etc. You can tell by the bumpers and headlights as well. The 60bhp twingo's have the bumpers in the video. The 75bhp dynamique and GT have a more triangular corner pods for the front fog lights in the front bumper. And they don't have the black plastic corner trims on the rear bumper. The GT has a cut out in the rear bumper for the exhaust. The RS uses the GT rear bumper, but with a black bit of plastic glued the bottom of the bumper where the number plate is. And the RS has it's own front bumper. The dynamique, GT and RS have black inserts on there headlights, the lower trim models don't. The Dynamique and GT look really similar, but the GT has a silver rear wing, sliver wing mirrors, silver fog light pods and its own alloy wheel design. And it has a darker tint on the side and rear windows. Trouble is if you have a silver GT like mine, its not that obvious as all the sliver trim bits ends up just looking body coloured. I think the GT sits a little lower than the dynamique as well. The GT and RS have a different gearbox to the rest of the range, so they have a different shift pattern. (Reverse is opposite 5th on the GT and RS, while its beside 1st on the rest of the range). The GT and RS have cable linkages and a hydraulic clutch. The rest of the range have steel linkages and a cable clutch. I've had a GT for just over 10 years now (The 1.2 turbo). It's a great little car, it's never really had that much go wrong with it. I've driven it all over the UK and Ireland. I've done 600 miles in a day in it before and its been fine. But its on 111k miles, so its not in it as good nick as the one in the video. But you get height adjustment on the drivers seat on the GT, so you can get a better driving position. (And by sitting lower you can see the speedo). You get a nicer leather steering wheel on the GT too. (Plus AC, electric mirrors, auto lights and wipers, a better 6 speaker stereo, individual moving seats in the back). If you want to compare, I'm only over the border in Sussex.

My mum had one, 6500 miles in 10 years, and I did 1000 of those! It was a dynamique model which had the separate 2 seats in the back which slid. Wasn’t a bad car tbf alas she drove it into the back of a removal vans tail lift - I convinced her to give up driving at that point.

Great stuff I loved the look of the original Twingo, a great cheap runabout. As is often the way all the appeal of the original car went out the window with the new version, this just looks like any car and doesn't stand out at all. Such a shame we didn't get the original in the UK.
@joshbacon8241

The reason why the original Twingo was never built in right-hand-drive was because of two reasons: Firstly, at the time, Renault was in the middle of a cost-cutting exercise in the 90’s, after suffering great financial difficulties in the 80’s. Secondly, Renault apparently didn’t want it stealing sales from the Clio in the UK.

The next twingo (current) definitely upped the quirk back up and then some, being rear engined and rear wheel drive with it's wheels at the very edges and it's funktacular design. Hope furious gets his hands on one.

5:30 - CORRECTION: I did a check on this Twingo and this particular one featured in this video (EY10 YSS) is actually the less powerful 60hp 1.2-litre 8-valve model, not the 75hp one which you said it was. And this one is also a Freeway specification, which was only offered with the 60hp 1.2 anyway.

Those interior audio speakers look very trippy. I do like Twingos. I used to see a phase 2 version of this in cyan / turquoise near where I worked - very eye catching in that unusual colour option. Shame that Renault no longer sells a new version of the Twingo but I suppose the profit margins on city cars aren't great.

I have a 2013 Twingo Mk3 and it's very economical, reliable and, well, simple. It does have air-con, Bluetooth, fog lights and cruise control, though, so some mod-cons. Matt's spot on about it in this review, as the Mk3 is essentially a prettier face lift model but otherwise identical. It's zippy rather than fast and ideal for commuting and/or the city.

Wonderful video again Matt! I own a Twingo 2 for a couple of years now and I intend to keep it longer. It's a 100+HP (remapped) TCE GT and has, fortunately, way more nice stuff on board than the (beautiful) basic model you drove. BTW, given the fact 'your' Twingo was a basic one, are you sure it was the 1.2 16V with 75HP? It also could have been the 1.2 8V with 60HP. Had one before the GT and it was so slow... 0 to 60 in 17 seconds or so. When on the market for a Twingo 2, try to find one with two individual back seats. It really gives the little car way more practicality. And go for, at least, the 75HP versions (or faster: 100 or 133HP). And regarding the 3rd generation.....Less quality and not so handy with engine in the rear.

I've got a 2013 Renault Twingo and I love it so much. Had it just over 3 yrs now and can't see myself parting with it. I especially love that you don't see so many of them on the road. Mine is also Purple (It's down as Red in the log book but looks more purple to me. I've driven 20,000 miles in mine and loved every second. I was actually looking for a Fiat 500 or a Citroën C1 but I feel like there's just so many of them around. I spotted my car at a dealership and thought I'd go and check it out and I fell in love with it. I also test drove a Kia Picanto and a Suzuki Alto but neither stood up against my Twingo.

Well done Matt a great review I always liked these twingo and the originals and to me both were a worthy successor to the Renault 5 as the clio grew up considerably I think from memory and in 2007 I had a brand new megane you had to go up to the dynamique for air con and then the privelidge had climate control and all the toys I think you could have a twingo or a dynamique which had a slightly higher spec and then there were the really sporty versions the Gordini! I remember having them as courtesy cars when my Megane and wife’s clios were in and they were lovely to drive but agree with you about the speedometer! Keep up the hard work!

The reason the Central instrument dial are a bit awkward to see is because Renault never bothered to change it for the left to right hand drive cars. Its the exact same as in the left hand drive Twingos. I think that was a mistake by Renault cost cutting like that and it cost them sales. Otherwise they were a cute little car that still look great today.

Recommended one to my GF here in Poland since she was looking for something small and cheap. Not dissapointed. Not a single major issue despite being already 15 years old (the mileage was low-ish a tho). I drove it several times and it's quite obvious how the chassis can take more than 75hp. It felt firm and confident, even on the highway. I have droven a newer (2019-ish) Fiat 500 and that one felt like it was going to desintegrate above 80kph. Sound isolation was also a huge step down. If Renault actually bothered to design it cute and appealing to females, the mk2 Twingo could have been a massive hit, because the two most successful competitors (Panda and 500) got away with worse engine options, chassis and workmanship by virtue of being cheaper (Panda) or looking way better (500)

This was a time that it seemed Renault seemed to wind down their french quirkiness a little bit for some time with all of their cars (with the exception of models like the Wind), but it certainly picked back up later with the 3rd generation of the Twingo becoming rear engined, rear wheel drive the wheels pushed right to the corners and that distinctive design, their other models also becoming more interesting again.

Call me biased as I own an original MK1 Twingo but the quirky nature of the 1st car was a deceptive trick in what was an incredibly well thought out piece of packaging. It has room for four good sized adults, but with the flick of a couple of levers becomes a real practical little minivan with plenty of space. The monobox shape means no space is wasted inside. I bet the MK1 is actually more practical than the MK2 by a long way and in a much smaller footprint on the road than the MK2 Twingo. The MK2 is dull in comparison, and not even better for it.

I had the great misfortune to be landed with one of these (in Dynamique trim - alloy wheels and a rev counter, but same engine) as a courtesy car once while my Mk3 Clio was being serviced many years ago. Being accustomed to diesel torque, this was abysmal by comparison. The only Renault option worse than this might have been a Mk3 Clio with the same 1.2NA engine, having to haul along even more mass with the same lack of grunt (and THAT was what I got as a courtesy car at the next service on my Clio...). Not economical either - just frustrating. I'd asked for a diesel if at all possible, considering my daily mileage at the time, but apparently the dealer couldn't oblige. No point thrashing it because it's just slow. Getting back into my Clio afterwards was like going from an old Mini to a Merc - nicer trim, less-stupid radio mount, more grunt, just a lot nicer-feeling. I miss that car these days, as I'm now in a Fiesta which is objective proof that only the French know how to make cars ride well (because the Fiesta is atrocious). Incidentally, the opportunity to bang your head on the door aperture was the same in the Mk3 Clio - the roof line curves down a lot (presumably so that the passenger cell is stronger) - although the headroom once inside is probably good enough to wear a top hat. That was one of the few things I always disliked about the Clio (short gearing and a rubbish handbrake mechanism were the others) - they could have made the car more aerodynamic by chopping a few inches out of the headroom and still provided reasonable accommodation for 99% of drivers.

The right-hand side wiper arm has a mechanism at the bottom that pushes it outwards into the corner as it sweeps. You can see it at 2:50 - notice how there's a big black plastic cover with two linkages coming from the bottom of it. This is the same setup as my 2005 Grand Scénic, and I've never had any issue with visibility caused by the sweep of the wipers. The mechanism does however contain some bearings which can rust and break up with age. I bought a kit off eBay to replace mine, apparently the replacements are the same as skateboard wheel bearings.

@@Zeem4 That does seem smart (kind of the like W124 I imagine), but I don't imagine this is unique for the RHD model? It does seem like it would still wipe the passenger side better than the driver's - I know I'd be irritated! Just seems like such a funny place for Renault to have cost-cut, albeit the smaller market for RHD cars.

@@JackpodyDK Looking at pictures on the internet, it is unique to the RHD models. It's certainly a cost-saving measure though, but maybe it's better to have the cars available to buy with this wiper setup than not at all - there are quite a few models in Renault's range that they don't even make in RHD any more (e.g. Renault Talisman).

@@Zeem4 That is somewhat surprising, but seeing it as a cost-cutting measure, not as much as I expected! Thank you for the explanation.

Unfortunately, the Twingo wasn't offered here in Australia. Renault Australian boss said “We’d love to offer it - but there’s a problem. Price" - April 2014 Read: Not sh!t enough for the antipodean plebs 🙄

The car that ruined it for the Twingo name. It went from something revolutionary to austerity on wheels. Such a shame.

The day French manufacturers stop being quirky is the day life becomes not worth living, they do appear to be erring on the side of mainstream now though.

Take the quirkiness away you remove their reason to exist. Like the 2nd gen fiat multipla it just became anonymous & pointless.

Yet Renault is one oldest automakers in the world that has sold millions and millions of vehicles. Most of them to repeat buyers that were satisfied enough with their old vehicle to spend a significant amount of money for a new one.

My late parents owned used examples an original Renault Megane Scenic 1.6 8v and then the facelifted version 16v. They weren't fault free but they were extremely good cars that never broke down. I used to dislike the marque for the perceived reputation on unreliability but I changed my opinion after those Scenics.

Renault Twingo seems to do well in UK reliability scoring. I see loads of them on the road. When a car is "as common as muck" it tends to mean they are reliable and economical no nonsense cars.

Why did Renault's happy Twingo lose its smile?
