Opening a bank account in Jamaica can be a hassle. But the Bank of Jamaica is working on a process to make it easier. Instead of having to go through the same process whenever you want to open an account, there’ll be a database that the banks can get that information from.

Khalilah I think the BOJ went about it the wrong way. They should have probably used the OpenBanking model which is an approach that works. OpenBanking allows customers to share their information between banks in a digital standard format. This is done in other jurisdictions.

be careful how we watch foreign news and think what is good for a G20 nation is good for Jamaica. We need to develop and craft our own privacy laws. Why? Everyday I check the news, there is another well-known company that suffered from an outside attack from a hacker and some ransom was needed to unlock the data...

I don’t get why persons should have to disclose any more financial information than the source of the funds that will be deposited to open the account. Collecting more information than that makes the person a potential target for crime and does nothing to prevent money laundering. If you want to catch launderers…why not make accounts easy to open, then monitor for suspicious transactions?

Whereas hackers would need to hack each banks system and probably come across the information you didn't want to disclose to one or two banks in the first place....centralizing the data makes it a one stop shopping experience for hackers. Local banking platforms are compromised more often than reported- Central Digital storage is definitely a hacker's dream and that is concerning.

Banks need customer’s deposits to make money. Why would they be preventing people from opening bank accounts?

I'm concern about this, because we know its not not totally to benefit poor people. 1. Apart from "BANKS" What other agency's public or private, that will be allowed to have access to this information? What are the protections that are put in place to prevent abuse? 3. Will the public/person's information allowed to be shared with 3 parties 4. Can the public/person's denie access to their information to any agency 5. Will the public be notified when or if their their information is shared or accessed

as long as the information is in a private cloud and not on the servers off a foreign country and the information is only accessible on a VPN from a local offline network and only online when needed

I am concerned about my data protection. Three credit cards were compromised under my name and I didn't even received the cards. Now I owned none because of how traumatised I have been. Y should I trust this new system if that has happened to me....?
