I am a newbie with watercolor and I bought these 2 weeks ago as my first set. Amazon has wonderful reviews of these paints. I am now painting a picture in an adult coloring book, and I like them. I don't care about lightfastness or selling my pictures. I color strictly for enjoyment. I used a very cheap set before and it was like painting with wet chalk. These are really nice to me. I can't wait to use them on a painting I plan to do of one of your landscape tutorials. 🎨😉😁

Thanks Steve! Honestly I am curious to try the premium range because of how good these are for the price and the premium is supposed to be extremely transparent and they are pretty cheap: 32 15ml tubes for $85 (honestly I have enough paint and I need my head examined!)

Thanks so much for the review. I really learned a lot. I've been painting with these for a while now. I bought the smaller set. They really were a step up from my Cotman travel set. I love the violet color, too bad it's fugitive. Thanks, I didn't realize that. I did just order the dot set from Da Vinci. After playing with that I'm not quite as happy going back to the Shinhan set.

Great review, Lindsay! 👍 I really like this paint. I agree that they're better than Cotman and even Van Gogh. Their Artist Grade version, the PWC, is also superb. They kind of remind me of Mijello Mission Gold (in fact, I think the Shinhan Professional is very similar to Mijello Mission Silver). The difference that I notice is that the PWC has Cadmium colours in their line meanwhile the Mission Gold doesn't.

Although it is advertised as a "professional" watercolor, Shinhan states these aren't artist grade watercolors. Shinhan markets it as in the middle between their true student grade watercolor paints and their artist grade watercolor paints.

What is the same of their student grade? Also, have you tried the premium shinhan? The prices is pretty great on those sets too but I didn't want to take a chance on them no knowing.

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich their student grade watercolors are called Shami watercolors, I don't think they are sold internationally. I haven't tried their artist grade watercolors, from what I hear they they seem fine. Some colors are slightly more opaque then Western watercolors
@DrPhilologist
@DrPhilologist 6 жыл бұрын
TheAwkwardMaître D'. The shumi are scholastic. Basically for kids at school. This is their true student grade while PWC (called SWC in the Korean market) is the artist line. Very very good, identical to Holbein but with too many fugitive reds. PWC/SWC is definitely not opaque, by any stretch of the imagination. They are very similar to European brands minus the ox-gall and those I tried seemed to perform very nicely next to my other brands.

The Shami line is their scholastic line (for grade school students) like Crayola but sort of on steroids cause they are way better than Crayola, CrazArt, RosArt, etc.; I know they say, when translated into English, that the Shami is student, but they really mean scholastic like in grade school kids that are doing art since that’s what they are and the packaging implies and suggests as much also. They also have paint for preschool and kindergarten age called “S+art Water Color”. The “ShinHan Professional Water Color” is their actual student grade paint meaning people studying art and beginner watercolorists like college or high schoolers that are serious about getting into art; it’s sort of like a semi-professional line. That line is like the counter part to Cotman, Van Gogh, Schmincke Akademie, Sennelier La Petite, Nevskaya Palitra’s Sonet (White Nights/Yarka) and so on. Now, their professional line is the “ShinHan Premium Water Color” which is the PWC line and they are great. They also have a line of hybrid paint called ‘ShinHan Professional Artists’ Korean Colors’ which is a line with a palette of traditional Korean colors than works in Korean paper and in western watercolor paper (hence the hybrid denomination). Hope that helps. PS: the hybrid line also encases the ‘ShinHan Pass” line which a watercolor/gouache hybrid unlike the SH Prof. Korean Colors line which is denominated hybrid because is an Eastern palette that works also on western paper as opposed to working only on Korean mulberry paper.

Thank you Lindsay for a great review that keeps in mind the people who would be most likely to use the product. So many reviewers have their own extremely high "professional" standards about stuff, when a product doesn't meet their standards for professional quality, they simply diss the product.

Back from a toooo long vacation and catching up. I got this set on a whim quite awhile back because I didn’t love the Cotman and wanted a paint for my skill level. I LOVE them. There’s so much freedom to explore and try new things when you don’t feel like it’s money down the drain and you’re freezing up. They’re so much fun that I splurged and got the next step up. Bordeaux isn’t even offered in that line. As a surprise for our 41st anniversary, my husband got me the top line of Shinhan. Bless his heart, I’m nowhere near even opening those. No Bordeaux in that line either, and the Turner wine red fades like youth. You gave such great instructions on mixing colors in your class, I’m pretty sure I can mix that beautiful color somehow. Yum. In to the donuts 🤗

I am definitely getting this set, because I live in Canada! All of the decent brand watercolors get crazy expensive here and I am very much on a budget. Amazon has a nice bargain for Holbein 18 tube set but this is even cheaper (also larger tubes) and I like colour selection more (can only afford 18 tube set, but should be more than enough for now).

Thanks for the review Lindsay, its so appreciated! I can see they are not for me☺ Very well made review. I wondered also, now I can save my money for a different brand that may be for me. So important to have these reviews, since we all have different expectations from a watercolor and now there are so many watercolors to choose from these days. So many brands it's so wonderful. I would really love to see a review on Turner watercolors. Your the first artist I I've seen use them in the last few years. Now finally, I've seen a few reviews from a few respected artists I watch, but would really appreciate your opinion. I've been waiting so long, and value your opinions. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks so much for this review. I couldn't find any review that answered the questions I needed answered, so I bought these months ago, but haven't used them much. I am always looking for a good "practice" set, so I am not sorry I got them. I also love the set you have been painting with all summer, and they don't have any pigment info on them, not even the color names, so I figure I am ahead of the game with these, knowledge-wise. Best review out there for what I feel I needed to know.

I have these and their PWC line (these are actually student, PWC is the true artist/professional quality). I really enjoyed these paints, but I love the PWC! Much nicer to work with, they "dry" in the pan more like Mission Gold, and higher pigment load (IMO). These are definitely the money, and I enjoy them more than Cotman.

I like the Cotman for a basic 6 color limited pallet. As long as they are in a covered pallet they haven't cracked up when dry. I have a set of 36 from US Art Supply which was under 15 bucks delivered that has excellent lightfast ratings and doesn't desolve when rewet. Student grade. I've gotten two QOR. High chroma and starter set to replace student grades so far. I replace my student grades as expenses and great sales permit.

Ok, so serious important question.... I’ve got the itch for new watercolors and I gotta know, These, or the DoodleHog 36 pan set((not the 48 I saw your review)) which one is better paint? Forget price because both are great price, which is better quality paint itself for flow and pigment strength and mix-ability, in your opinion?
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 3 жыл бұрын
The 36 set is way better for some weird reason. I think the 48 set is the same one hobby lobby sells for $40 so not bad for under $20 but given the choice id recommend the 36 set.

They remind me of the typical brights you can get in basicly any asian brand of watercolor, I was not suprised on how vivid they would get, I have the Hybrid Gouache from Shinhan; aka the shinhan pass ( Those I own are ment to be opaque, its a semi gouache,duhh,lol) and they are so damn VIVID. I mean, gouache is not intended to be thát vivid,so ofcourse,me being miss cannot do muted colors, I fell for it instantly. If I want them to mix like an actual gouache I can mix some white in it and Im good to go. Those shinhanpass semi gouache retails for that little money as well and is totally worth the buy,certainly when on a budget. Just a free tip. I don't know how they get their paints so cheap, I tried to find an answer for it online, but couldn't be of any help there.
@joyfulldj
@joyfulldj 6 жыл бұрын
The only downfall I have with extreme brights, is that they are rarely lightfast hahaha. Ok I admid I cant aford a daniel smith. Or perhaps I dont want to. I refuse to pay up to 8 euro per 5ml tube when I can buy me two tubes of either schmincke or senneliers for that price. Downfall of living in europe: US art supplies are quite pricy here. Though Jackson's is a nice loophole in that regard for me. Not for my schmincke's and W&N. But evrythingelse? Oh jeah. Hahaha

I've been doing some research on Mungyo & Shinhan watercolors in the past few days and your reviews were great sources of information. How do you compare Mungyo vs Shinhan professional, not the PWC premium line, watercolors in technical aspects, their mixing characteristics, and lightfastness? I prefer a limited palette so for me it's either Mungyo 12 color set + 2-3 extra pans to cover the lack of variety for yellow and red colors, the tin palette is also a plus for me right now, or it's a selection of 10-12 Shinhan professional watercolors covering primary colers and a couple of green and earth tones. Thanks!

I've looked at these several times in my "research" of purchasing WC's because of their price. They plaster them all over Amazon. I'm glad that I didnt get them after watching this. I still have my eye on the Mijello Mission Golds and am hoping Santa gets them for me. I did just get the Altenew set that was just released. I did a color swatch today and I really like them. They go liquid with very little water and the colors are gorgeous. They come in a 36 set and included with my purchase I got another pan case for free, which I thought was great. For $48, I got the 36 colors, an additional case, a mixing pallet and the classes. I thought that was pretty good. I'd love to see your thoughts on them... hint, hint LOL :) Oh and they are saying they are "Artist Grade"

Nancy Osborn I actually wasn't thrilled with them. Maybe the single pigment set would be better, but surprisingly I found the "mozart" 40 color gansai set was way better for a fraction of the cost.

Nancy Osborn Chalky is the reason why I didn't recommend them, I recommended Mozart gansai. Additionally, they're not supposed to be transparent. They're gansai. They're like all the best parts of watercolor and gouache. If you're concerned with transparency, I'd stay away from any eastern watercolor whatsoever.

Crucibelle ditto. I've been thrilled with all the Mozart products I've tried. They're listening to what people want. The only downside is the lightfastness. But my work is scanned anyway so it's a nonissue for me.

Hi Lindsay. I have a set of 24 and they're not bad. Very vibrant color but I find they tend to go opaque very quickly/easily. You have to have a light hand and a lot of water to keep them transparent. And I too think they lift very easily which is frustrating. But then I haven't tried them on anything other than Strathmore 400 & Master's Touch (Hobby Lobby) water color paper. Yes, I know, I need to work on pro paper. I will. What paper did you use for your testing? Thanx. Cheers, Mark

OK for student grade.. I didn't really feel comfortable using them. They cost £19.00 and had a free brush with them. I was much happier when I returned back to my Schmincke water colours. I don't really trust the Light fastness as I had left a couple of paintings on my window sill during the last heatwave, along with one I'd done with Schmincke the week before. I noticed a difference in the paints faiding on the Korean paints. My Schmincke was OK. Thanks Lynsay.. Love the leaves. Honestly food? Again? Your killing me.. Lol..

What is a fugitive color? What does that mean?
@marvastroud8772
@marvastroud8772 6 жыл бұрын
"Fugitive" colors are pigments guaranteed to fade over time, reguardless of exposure to sunlight. They fade even more with direct uv contact. There isn't any real way to tell how much it takes to fade them from brand to brand; but that's also a part of the definition. To put it simply, they are the lowest lightfastness rating on a scale from "idunno goodluck" to "this painting will outlive your greatgrandchildren".

I think Shinhan shouldn't use so many fugitive pignents while calling it professional grade watercolor. There should also be more single pigment colors in the range. That being said, a clerk at my art supply store warned me once that the term "professional" was not a certified classification like "organic" or "hypo-allergenic". So technically, he said that means companies can slap "professional" on any quality paint they want and they often do as a marketing ploy. After learning that, I became a label reader, focusing on the quality of the paint's contents instead of the brand's classifications which apparently, could be marketing hype.

I think these would be an ok set for card makers, but wouldn’t be my first choice for sure. I’m certainly not an accomplished artist like Lindsey, she’s awesome! I think Mission Gold or White Nights pans would be my first two choices, if I were just starting out and wanted an economically priced artist grade set.
