As-Salaamu Alaykum I want to quickly address an error I made during our recent class regarding the etiquettes of visiting the grave of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Due to a slip of the tongue, I mistakenly mentioned that the practice was to prostrate to the grave. This was incorrect, and I apologize for any confusion it may have caused. The correct practice, as highlighted in Al-Sawi’s Commentary (حاشية الصاوي), involves making duaa while facing the grave and seeking assistance (Tawassul) through the Prophet (ﷺ) in one’s prayers. Here is the relevant quote for your reference: “Among the emphasized etiquettes when entering the illuminated city (دُخُولِ الْمَدِينَةِ الْمُشَرَّفَةِ) are bathing (الغُسْلُ), using perfume (التَّطَيُّبُ), and renewing repentance (تَجْدِيدُ التَّوْبَةِ). Upon entering the noble mosque (الْمَسْجِدَ الشَّرِيفَ), one should go to the Rawdah (الرَّوْضَةَ) and pray two rak’ahs of greeting the mosque (ركعتين تَحِيَّةَ الْمَسْجِدِ). Then, one should come in front of the noble grave (قُبَالَةَ الْقَبْرِ الشَّرِيفِ) and say: “Peace be upon you, O my master, O Messenger of Allah (السَّلَامُ عَلَيْك يَا سَيِّدِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ). Peace be upon you, O my master, O Beloved of Allah (السَّلَامُ عَلَيْك يَا سَيِّدِي يَا حَبِيبَ اللَّهِ). Peace be upon you, O my master, O most honored Messenger of Allah (السَّلَامُ عَلَيْك يَا سَيِّدِي يَا أَشْرَفَ رُسُلِ اللَّهِ). Peace be upon you, O leader of the pious (السَّلَامُ عَلَيْك يَا إمَامَ الْمُتَّقِينَ). Peace be upon you, O mercy to the worlds (السَّلَامُ عَلَيْك يَا رَحْمَةً لِلْعَالَمِينَ). I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah, you have conveyed the message, fulfilled the trust, advised the ummah, removed the distress, and spoke with wisdom (أَشْهَدُ أَنَّك رَسُولُ اللَّهِ بَلَّغَتْ الرِّسَالَةَ، وَأَدَّيْت الْأَمَانَةَ، وَنَصَحْت الْأُمَّةَ، وَكَشَفْت الْغُمَّةَ، وَنَطَقْت بِالْحِكْمَةِ). May Allah send blessings upon you and upon your family and companions all together (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْك، وَعَلَى آلِكَ وَأَصْحَابِك أَجْمَعِينَ).” Then, he should seek intercession through him for all his needs (يَتَوَسَّلُ بِهِ فِي جَمِيعِ مَطْلُوبَاتِهِ).” I hope this clarification helps in understanding the correct practice.
