I loved your approach to this most challenging aspect of Hindi for non-native speakers! And for those who were brought up speaking English, like me, it's double the challenge. Why? Because English is one of only 6 or 7 languages that do not have gender for verb conjugation, adjectives, and inanimate objects. I think instant recognition of the gender of objects by native speakers is a miracle of nature! It's not just recognition of known objects but consider the case of a new word or a rare word... tell me Firdaus what gender is Paleontologist?? Or, say, entropy? When you use them without translation in a Hindi sentence? I'm sure you will get it right! That's the miracle I'm referring to. And that's the miracle I experience around me among native Hindi speakers... even little kids!

When I was learning Hindi many years ago I remember there were some basic rules for determining the gender of nouns based on the type of word. Besides learning the ending -aa or -ii, there are some other clues that can help. Here is what I can share about the same: 1- Common Categories for the Masculine Gender in Hindi 1) Days’ Names 2) Month Names 3) Names of Mountains 4) Names of Trees, Flowers, and Fruits 5) Names of Countries and Continents 6) Names of the Metals 7) Names of the Planets 2- Common Categories for the Feminine Gender in Hindi 1) Dates 2) Names of Rivers 3) Names of Languages and Scripts 4) Names with Certain Suffixes (If you find words that end with the following suffixes--आहट (aahat), -आवट (aavat), -इया (iyaa), -आस (aaS)-they’re most likely feminine nouns in Hindi.) There are exceptions of course, but I believe it is easier to learn the basic rules and then the exceptions rather than treating everything as an exception.

@HindiSumvaad Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Bikram. You should essentially keep the gender and singular/ plural in mind while writing or speaking. I understand that is a challenging part. I'm working on a video on this topic. Meanwhile, you must learn the genders and plural forms and speak like how native speakers (those who are good at grammar) do.

@HindiSumvaad
@HindiSumvaad Жыл бұрын
You must speak - Main baat kar raha tha. Main baat kar raha tha - means the speaker is male Main baat kar rahi thi - means the speaker is female We mostly follow subject and verb agreement where you end with the action word depending upon the gender of the speaker. Here, it's main.. so, 'tha' also relates to 'main'. There are only a few exceptions.

It usually does but not here. Kalam is called lekhni in Sanskrit and that is a feminine word. Lekhni and kalam are related words. Here, both are feminine.
