Georgia, I know you are retired from posting these great videos, but I still want to thank you for their clarity and clear, clear explanations. My grandmother taught me how to shuttle tat in 1976, and as much as I enjoy that, needle tasting I have found to be more relaxing and a little faster. Thanks to your videos 1 to 4 I think I've got the hang of it and I'm very excited. Thank you again!

Hello Jolene. I have to tell you this is not Georgia. Georgia didn't make these videos. My name is Tamie Montgomery. I made these videos for Georgia years ago. She has since intrusted me to run the classes and to carry them forward for generations to come. The new channel is here kzfaq.info We also have the final interview with Georgia on it so you can meet us both. Happy Tatting

Oops, my mistake. But these are still great tutorials and your explanation s made the "light bulb go on", I have been practicing like mad and now I know the chain is made with the ball thread as in shuttle tatting. You explained how and which way to turn the work when changing elements, and also how NOT to get the ball thread entangled in the work. That's been a point of frustration and almost made me give up. Many thanks!

Hi Georgia! All I can say is Thank you for your lessons. Lesson 3 and this lesson 4 helped me in so many ways. I have been collecting old tatting books and pieces of books. I love the delicate work it creates. I tried using a shuttle but I found it difficult and took me forever. With these two lessons I am now flowing along and things are turning out finally. I have in particular pattern that uses a foundation row of half-closed rings. I could not for life of myself figure out how they got just 1 thread spaces. Now I am getting it and loving the pattern even more. Many thanks again!

I love this! Everything looks so much neater. However, is it practical to use it in a project such as earrings etc? It seems like you would have to have yards of needle thread, and potential for lots of unwanted knots. How do you estimate how much needle thread you need?
@georgiaseitzonlinebeginnin4714
@georgiaseitzonlinebeginnin4714 8 жыл бұрын
+Linda Clark Hi Linda and thank you so much for watching. personally the true ring is wonderful to use. The downside is the amount of tail thread it requires. For something small like an earring project you would need about 18 inches of tail thread. When I have to use more than that for a tail thread I tend to make the loop a little bigger and balance the amount between the tail thread and loop. It seems to help. Or you can use smaller amounts but you will have more ends to hide. I don't like hiding alot of threads so I usually just use the amount of tail thread I believe I would need. I have had about 4 feet of tail thread for a project and your right you have to be careful of the knots it can make. The amount of tail thread you would need isn't set in stone for a project. you base it on how much you can handle at a time and how many ends you really are willing to deal with. that is the best answer I can give you on this. I look at a project and see how much thread is involved and how detailed it is and base my tail thread on that. I am not aware of any mathematical process for needle tatting and how much tail thread to leave. i wished I could of been more helpful but I hope what I have told you does explain it a bit better for you. Happy Tatting

Thank you so much for these videos! I've learned so much already. The only thing I'm still confused about is the reversing. You said at the end that you turn your work to the right after a ring and turn it to the left after a chain. Is this a hard rule that I can use throughout tatting? I'm usually the kind of person that has to know why something is done to understand it but if there's just a rule I can use throughout, I'll be good with that! Thank you again!

Hi and Thank you so much for watching. I am happy to know the videos are helping. I do have to let you know I am not Georgia. My name is Tamie and I do the videos for the classes. Georgia and Cynthia teach the online classes. Anyway on this video the reason I state on which way to reverse your work is because you have to do it that way when making a true ring. If using a self closing mock ring which is normally used in needle tatting these days you would reverse your work in the opposite directions. The true ring is the closest to shuttle tatting so in order to get your working thread and core threads in the right place you would have to reverse work the way I stated. I hope that explains it for you and Happy Tatting

When making jewelry I always use about 12 inches of tail thread for doilies I gauge if it is a large doily or a small one. You just have to think since the tail thread is only used at the core thread unless making the true ring. So larger doilies take more than smaller. My go to measurements are 12 to 18 inches and add more as needed.

Hi, Tamie & Barb! I've been studying this & your previous video for two days now - I'm stuck on my 5th, of 8, "true rings" [2-2+2-2-2] & despite doubling the length of tail thread I still run out & get all twisted up. So, I was wondering if Barb's True Ring instructions were currently available in print? It's coming out of the chain that does me in - I know, flip left... I've searched the GS site & only find the "needle tatting with two colors of thread" tutorial. Also it seems the handyhands true ring info is MIA :\ Thank you both so very much in advance for putting my silly mind at ease!

Hi Keli. I looked for a printout of Barb Foster's true ring and can't find it anywhere. She used to have it up on her website at Handy Hands. If you email her I am sure she will send you a copy of it. Having said that even though you doubled your thread and dealt with the twisty of it that is the only way to do the true rings to be totally honest. I have used like 5 yards of tail thread to make an item in needle tatting. That is the drawback on needle tatting is the tail thread isn't enough thread. After I dealt with the thread the first time I began my hunt for a solution. I used a shuttle to hold the tail thread and wound and unwound every time. Yes monotonous at best but it worked to control tangling of the thread. I have also used a used toilet paper roll to put the extra thread on. Make sure you smash the roll so it doesn't roll anymore though or else the tangle is worse. cut a slit in the end to lock the thread on. I mostly shuttle tat because needle tatting you have to make so many accommodations for it to look like shuttle tatting. Yes it is easier to needle tat and yes there are some patterns that call for needle's to be used. I myself will use a needle for smaller projects like motifs I am connecting together to make a doily. Celtic tatting is so much easier on needle than shuttle as well. I have found knowing both tools helps me to enjoy tatting even more so because it gives versatility to tatting when working each pattern. I also use needles when trying a new technique so I can see in depth how the technique works. Try to email Barb Foster at Handy Hands and see if she has a copy or pdf you can get from her on the true ring and she may also have suggestions on how to measure the thread for what your doing so it will help you plan ahead for it. I wished I could help more. I will also contact Barb Grainger, she is the class needle tatter that teaches me new techniques to put up for needle tatters. If I can get anything from her on it I will let you know. Happy Tatting.

Hi Keli. I'm sorry to take so long to get back to you. I haven't been on the internet much lately. As you have learned, needle tatted true rings use up a lot of the 'core' thread (The thread that goes through the eye of the needle and makes the loop) because you use it instead of the ball thread to tat the true rings. I do not have a tutorial for making a true ring with the 'ring and chain' method as you see in this video. It is on my to-do list but I have been sidetracked by life these past several months. I have done a tutorial for making a true ring with 'ring and thread' method which I shared with Tamie because she and I often work together on figuring things out, but I'm not ready to release it to the public at this time as I am still tweaking it. Tammy Rodger's tutorial is awesome for learning how to make a true ring with cut thread and a true ring with the ball still attached. In her tutorial she doesn't label them as true rings though. The first ring in her tutorial is a true ring that you'd make when you are working a project with ring and thread method. The very last illustration shows how to make a true ring while the thread is still attached to the ball. Please take note though that the true ring is still made with the needle (core) thread and the 'ball' thread is used for chains. So when doing true rings with the ring and chain method, you always use the needle (core) thread for the true rings and the ball thread for the chains. She does not explain how to go on and make a chain though. Her information here is just to show you the thread and ball position in relationship to the tatting needle.. Here is a link to her free pdf: www.georgiaseitz.com/newtat/tammyrodgersneedletatdiagrams.pdf Please take a look and see if it helps. Is there a way to contact you privately if you still need help? I would prefer you not put your contact information here for the whole world to see unless you are comfortable with that. These days hackers love to find that kind of stuff on the internet. Anyway, I will check back tomorrow to see if you have answered yet. Oh, by the way. I did find Handy Hand's true ring information. Barb Foster just doesn't call it a true ring on that page. Here's the link to her instructions: www.hhtatting.com/learn-how-to-do-needle-tatting-double-stitch.cfm Have a great tatting day! Barb :)

I watched this video on true rings. Are the chains all done from the needle thread, and the rings from the ball thread? Or , the first true ring was done from the ball thread, the next was chain, also from ball, the second true ring was from needle, the following chain from ball. Am I correct that we alternating now? If so the true ring from needle. Could you explain. I have been knitting for years and want to learn to tat. Thank you!

+Laura Wood Hi Laura and thank you so much for watching. When working a true ring the thread you will be using on ALL true rings comes from the needle. When doing chains they will Always come from the ball thread. The other ring done by needle tatters usually is called a self closing Mock ring or scmr. That also comes from the ball because it is a chain turned into a ring when you close it and run your needle thru the loop at the base of the chain. I have a video on the channel showing that. I can fully understand the confusion between the 2 rings. The true ring is the closest thing to a ring like what shuttle tatters use and it also prevents having to tie the little knot at the end of each ring and chain. It can be very useful in needle tatting once you get accustomed to it. Happy tatting and if you need anymore help please ask and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Again thank you for watching.

Hi Roxanne and thank you for watching. The true ring is of personal choice as with most tatting of today. It is what your most comfortable with and what end result you like best. I hope that will answer many questions that you have. Most patterns of today will tell you to use the true ring if it is to be used in the pattern. Otherwise it is the standard ring that is used the self closing mock ring. Happy Tatting

Hi Adelia. Congrats on teaching yourself to needle tat!! Now to answer your question, yes all true rings will come from the tail thread. I myself am not a "true" needle tatter. All the tutorials come from Barb Grainger. She is the true needle tatter. I know the basics but when they get more technical Barb is my go to Gal on help. She isn't online much anymore due to family health issues. I'm also not online much anymore because I am also dealing with that with my own Mom. @georgiaseitzonlinebeginnin4714
@georgiaseitzonlinebeginnin4714 6 жыл бұрын
A true ring is the closest thing to a ring made by shuttle tatter's. It is mainly personal preference on needle if you chose to do a mock ring or a true ring. True rings are more stable and hold their shape better than a mock ring for needle tatters. If you plan on entering any competitions then you will score better using a true ring vs using a mock ring but as I sad before it is preference on the tatters part mainly. Thank you for watching and I hope this answers your question. Happy Tatting.

Thank you very much :) I learned the basics a couple years ago but there were just a couple little things I never understood. And your videos are really helping me out :) My grandma shuttle tatted but since I had a stroke and my hands don't work well enough to use the shuttle. Needle tatting is a great way to be able to do something she did :) One more question. Say I am trying to make a bracelet or something longer like that. How do I know how much tail thread to leave? I saw there was a vid about adding thread but I would rather not do that if I didn't have to. I will get to that one later tonight probably.
@georgiaseitzonlinebeginnin4714
@georgiaseitzonlinebeginnin4714 6 жыл бұрын
The reason behind not carrying a long tail is that the more you pull it thru the stitches the more frayed it becomes. With that said you can carry a tail as long as you want. Just know it will fray and also tangle up. So be ready for the frustration of that. Just forewarning you as they say. LOL. Now measuring for the length is basically a guess there is no mathematical way to measure because it all depends on tension and thread size. So most that do use longer tail thread sort of guess at it. Here is some thought to put into it. The tail thread is just the core thread unless your working the true ring method then it will be the thread making the stitches. Remember rings take more thread than chains. That is about all the advice I can give you on how much thread to use for the tail. When I use needle to tat I wrap my thread around my finger for how many rings I have and add about 3 inches to that just in case of miscalculating then count how many chains and add and inch for each chain that way I don't have to tie in ends and add thread. Sometimes you just don't want to deal with that. It isn't a proven science but it works for me with far less waste of thread. So I hope that helps you. Happy Tatting
