I'm not in your area but I was wondering, can I use landscaper's burlap around the plant like a carpet to keep out weeds? I'm in Virginia and my variety is the Percy Wiseman. English Ivy is trained growing on the brick several feet away. I'm trying to prevent ivy from growing toward the bush. It was just planted today.

I built a berm in part shade. The rhododendrons are doing good. How should I protect them for winter? I live 300' from Lake Michigan, so I get winds off the Lake and from the west. I mulch with ground up Oak leaves and wood chips. Should I be wrapping them with burlap or a burlap wind screen? They are only 18" high by 24" wide. Their label stated Midwest grown in Wisc. Even with last years mild winter I lost two plants. Replaced them with Northern lights azaleas. They have many buds set for next year, so I want to protect the buds. Thanks

I don't know what rhododendrons you planted, but they may be okay without much more protection. I found the Finnish hybrids to be extremely hardy. Also I don't know what soil mixture you used. I am glad that you made a berm. I used oak leaves and pine fines to mulch. The wood chips are bad because they use a lot of nitrogen which they get from the soil as they decompose. Notice yellow grass which has sawdust spread on it. Wood chips hurt the soil! If you really have a wind problem in the winter, try using a burlap fence around the bed where the rhodies are planted. I did this and often used a cheap plastic fence from Home Depot as a backing. Good luck and hope this helps. Ted Nyquist
