Once upon a time there was a farmer in a village who lived with his wife and his infant son. The farmer and his wife loved their son very much.
One day, while returning from the fields, the farmer found a small peanut lying by the roadside. It looked pale and bruised. The farmer picked him up and brought him home. He told his wife that little Mungo would be a pet for their son. His wife did not like the idea of having a mongoose near her son but reluctantly agreed.
The farmer bandaged Mungo's wounds and gave him food and water. Mungo recovered very quickly. Farmers' sons and mongooses grew together.
One day the farmer's wife had to go to the market. She put her son to bed and asked her husband to take care of him. He told him not to let the mongoose near his son. He somehow felt that it was not safe to let the animal near his son. The husband assured her that he would take care of the child.
Soon after his wife leaves for the market, the farmer is called by the local moneylender. The moneylender wanted to get back the money he had lent to the farmer some time ago. In that season, the farmer had a good harvest and he also had money ready.
The child was sleeping and thus the farmer could not take the child with him. He put the baby in his cradle and left him with Mungo. He believed that the mongoose was an intelligent animal and could take care of his son.
After some time the farmer's wife returned with a basket of vegetables. He found the mongoose waiting for him outside the house.
He looked at the mongoose and realized that something was not right. Mungo's face and paws were covered in blood. She was dumbfounded.
"You filthy creature, you killed my son!" He cried and hit the mongoose on the head with his basket full of vegetables.
She ran inside and was relieved to see the baby sleeping peacefully in his cradle.
But there was a black snake lying on the floor, bleeding from its parts. The snake appeared to be very poisonous.
The farmer's wife understood what had happened. The mongoose would have seen the snake and, realizing that it could harm the baby, the mongoose would have torn the snake to pieces.
But what did he do! She ran back to the mongoose.
With tears in her eyes, she lifted the heavy basket and bent down to look at it. The 'faithful' mongoose was dead.
