Today I'm sharing 10 lessons that I learnt after a year of selling flowers at the markets. I run through all of the lessons I learnt to run a successful market stall where I sell flowers, botanical gifts and plants to my local community. Currently, we sell flowers at our local village and farmers markets and throughout the last year have learnt SO much about how to set up a market stall and what works best to move the flowers. Hope you enjoy!

Hey there!
Welcome to my channel, The Nature Patch where I like to share all things gardening, cooking, environmental science and flower farming in my Australian bushland backyard in south coast NSW.
My name is Robyn, an environmental scientist, and flower farmer. I have recently completed my PhD in understanding how people's wellbeing and their connection to nature is impacted by land use change but now I'm taking a break from research to pursue a dream of owning a flower farm. I've always loved gardening and nature and lately have been interested in growing my own organic food!
On this channel you'll find videos relating to garden tours, 'how to' videos, composting, soil health and how to start a flower farm.
I try to upload twice a week and I hope you enjoy!!
🤎 Filmed and edited on Yuin country. I acknowledge and pay respects to Traditional Owners of the land past, present and emerging. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

Excellent content..Thank you. A small business is very challenging this days. Its all about customer perceptions. Because of the environment setting ie: very personal (versus corporate) that instinctively entitled customers to their bargaining habits when bartering. Many times i conciously remind myself to shop locally so our cost of living would not of gone through the roof because of the big players dictating customer's perception.

At the moment I also have to make the decision if I want to do a certain market 70km away. Its the best market of the entire region, but when I'm thinking over the time and also the driving-costs, I have to really sell a lot for being profitable. Otherwise its an additional chance for selling my flowers in a bigger scale. It's difficult to make the right decision and it helps to know, that others are also thinking over where they like to sell and where not. I also totally agree with you concerning the item when it's the right time to talk to a customer. Its so interesting, that you often will hear in some sales-workshops, that you should proactive talk to the customer, but I also don't like that being a customer myself. I think the more carefull approach is also the better one for me. Kind regards from denmark 🤗🌻

That's tricky particularly with costs of fuel also going up! Something I'm going to factor in to my costs this year I think :) Ah yes, I find too much talking and tends to put people off. Always about finding that balance and reading body language. Thank you so much for watching!

I personally don’t run a market stall, but I found this video very interesting : ) In listening to your lessons, I thought of a possible suggestion for the excess flowers not sold. My thinking was, if the retailer takes, let’s say 20% commission on the flowers they sold, maybe you could, for the last 30 to 40 minutes of your market stall, have a 20% sale on your flowers (and maybe a percentage off the vegetables not sold). Most customers love a sale. Then what flowers don’t sell, you can take to the retailer to sell. This is non flower related example, but at a major supermarket last week I bought one sweet potato required for a recipe. It cost me nearly $4 and it wasn’t even organic. At supermarkets (which I must admit are convenient, especially during the weekday) I’m always on the look out, as much as possible for a discount. So, my thinking was, towards the end of the market day, you may consider trialling a 20% discount off flowers, especially for customers, who, like me, love a bargain, even if they save $2. Anyway, something to consider : ) Even if this isn’t trialled I hope, as always, you have a successful market stall 🍆🫑💐

Absolutely, I think this can definitely work for some. I have tried it a few times but usually by the time I do, the markets are pretty quiet and not many people looking around. One thing I do try and keep in mind is to not upset those that ask me to hold flowers until they're ready. Sometimes people will buy them and I'll hold them aside for an hour or so until they're ready to go home. My concern is that having a sale may upset the customers who come back to pick up flowers seeing that I've marked all the others down. I'll have a think on this - I really appreciate your comment and want to work it in somehow :)

@@thenaturepatch Yes, I can see your dilemma with having an end of market sale. It’s nice you consider the customer : ) Hope you have a successful, productive, creative and an especially balanced week 🌱
