Listen to our podcast episode on A Quiet Place: apple.co/2JygZH0
Sound always plays a particularly important role in the horror genre, but A Quiet Place takes this a step further, making sound itself a key element of the story. So in this video I talk to the sound designers of the film, Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn, to learn more about the ways sound can be used in storytelling.

A Quiet Place is one of those films where most if not all, jump scares make sense, because of the lack of sound or noise. The script analyse was very interesting, something for other screenwriters and storytellers to incorporate into their works and art.

Sound, the most underappreciated aspect of any film in my opinion. Love this film and this analysis of sound really opens up my eyes and many others on how to go about sound in film. I too was "taught" in syd fields screenwriting book to not really focus on sound and I always neglected it in terms of screenwriting. But seeing in this video how to incorporate sound into a screenplay is incredibly helpful, will definitely help out any future endeavours in filmmaking! Entertaining and educational, phenomenal video!

For me the sound was absolutely essential in the star wars franchise. The sounds are so iconic that when you listen to them as a kid you will always associate the sounds with an image from star wars. Like this is a sword, this is a spaceship, this is R2 and so on. You don't even need to see what you are listening.
@JunebugPresents

Yup. It depends on the genre or the type of story you're telling. I agree about Star Wars.

The only issue with Star Wars and other films with battle scenes set in space is that sound doesn't carry in the vacuum of space so all the battles fall a little flat to me with all the silly "pew pew pew"s and the explosion sounds which wouldn't be there in real life. Hahah, I know that it's just for effect (especially for people who don't understand this..), but in most of the films (the good ones) I can mostly overlook this. That's just something I find a bit funny in space battle scenes and it makes the tone a bit comical 😄 I'm very hard to please when it comes to reality and the suspension of disbelief. Cheers

@@MrAdryan1603 i actually don't mind that. What i do mind is that some movies, Star Trek from 2009 comes to mind, acknowledge that for ONE scene and then go on the usual style, which is one of the reasons i love Gravity so much. Nothing against Star Trek, but still

As a screenwriter myself, writing in sound is always the hardest thing to do. It's often the silences or a quiet look, that invariably turn a good film or story into something great. This was a superb video on so many levels. A few films which come to mind where sound was imperative: Star wars IV (those lightsabers); The Matrix (bullet time); and of course, Jaws (that brooding shark score). Sound, such an underrated component but something so vital. Now got to hunt down that script and learn some new techniques. Thanks again, Michael.

One of the greatest quotes I've ever heard is (paraphrased), "I love radio better than TV, (why) because it has better pictures". Sound is the most important element of ANYTHING. I know sight practically is the most important sense, but if I lost my hearing, I would be TRULY devastated!

Like every tool in a storyteller's arsenal, it's all in how it's used. Some films could use a narrator and some shouldn't have one. And there's different ways to use a narrator, too. Narration isn't good or bad in and of itself. Just depends on how it's used.

Amazing! This is so interesting how the script for a quiet place was written. It's just like a novel. Using subtle phrases to convey the feeling such as describing the father's treacherous walk to keep absolute silence. 3:01 "John is 30 feet away from the shed... 20 feet away... 10 feet... 5... ...SNAP!!!" Not to mention the page spacing really helps draw the reader in. This and more all also help the filmmakers visualize what the final product will look like. Great video.

this movie has a fair amount of story and editing oversights that people seem to overlook, but the sound design is impeccable. Another really great horror movie that plays with this sound construct is Don't Breathe, highly recommend.

Awesome as always! Having done music and sound design for all sorts of footage, I know the importance, how it hits you directly and the emotional depth. Sorry, can't help it: 7:03 - is that a 35mm film magazine at the start of the zoom? Yes of course it is. This movie was shot on 35mm film with beautiful anamorphic lenses and it looks just outstanding. Anyway: thanks for yet another video with tons of very useful information! Happy for you that you met the guys in person!

We don't often talk about the importance of sound design as much as we should when we talk about movies. One of the most interesting videos you've done until today Mike. Congrats.
