The downstrokes on the chords are to demonstrate he's not only feeling blue, but he's also feeling a little down. ;) Excellent video as always!

Tony Rice invented the blue note just so he could play it with a downstroke.

Great stuff, thanks! But why is the capo on first fret? Is your guitar tuned down a 1/2 note? (Apologies if this question was already asked.)

Tony Rice plays the song with a capo on 1st fret! It's definitely a little rare to see capo 1st fret in bluegrass but there's no other instruments on this record. Tony probably just liked singing it there better!
