I accidentally had my playback speed on 1.25x from a backing track before this and thought you were just really into it on this recording lol. Great video man, thank you!

Love it when you talk theory. I think most of my playing belongs in the com-mode. LOL (No down vote yet. YAY! Maybe that guy left.)

Really good lesson Marcel! I've been wondering this for a while now. Is it possible to do a follow up video, where you perhaps solo over some chords just to show what bluegrass modes sound like? That'd be super helpful 😁

Have you thought about doing a video in modes that talk about their practical use? For example, when you are improving and might decide that using a modal scale is best. I’ve been told that Mixolydian should be used for songs that have a 7th chord in them (an F in a G song for example). And that Dorian works for songs that have a 2 chord (an A in a G song). This seems to work fairly well. But I’m wondering your thoughts on this kind of advice.

What key is Little Maggie in? G major? G Dorian, if so why is the g chord major instead of minor? G mixolydian, if so wouldn't the d major be minor instead?

This isn't really related to the video, and I know it probably varies from person to person, but how much of what advanced bluegrass guitarists play in jams or performances is improvised vs. figured out beforehand? It just kinda feels like cheating if I write a break for every song and never improvise over the changes, although I'm working on both.

This is a hard question to answer and varies from performer to performer and band to band. For me, I think that more than 50% should be improvisational. I think what's important here is that bluegrass is an improvisational genre. You should be able to improvise over everything. Having a prepared break shouldn't be a crutch, "this tunes hard to play, I had to compose a break." It should be a creative choice, "I think a written break that's always the same would serve this song better than an improvisational statement." Think Tony Rice improvising the beginning of Free Born Man versus playing the Church Street Blues break as written. It's not really a numbers game, it should just be serving the music.
