Friends, the readings for this weekend are tough. Here is the principle behind them, one that is simple to state, but difficult to take in: in a world gone wrong, those who come to us speaking and embodying the truth are going to be opposed. In our first reading from Jeremiah and in Jesus’ harsh, challenging message in the Gospel, we encounter the disruptive, burning, cleansing quality of authentic religion.

I don’t know , I just don’t know how to respond you and your sermons. Yes, I thank you , but it’s so much more. They have changed me , and your timing in so far as entering my life was perfect. My husband died four years ago and there you were . I hadn’t heard of you, I knew nothing about you . Perfect timing. I love you and wish nothing but peace , courage , stamina, and light for you and you vocation. Thank you. I cannot put words to it , but I have a very strange and strong pull towards you. I can only say that it is God, it’s beyond me , it’s bigger than me.

My friends and family were terribly opposed to me and "worried about me" when I became a Christian. They did NOT want me to change! Then I started therapy and joined Codependents Anonymous, and my friends and family HATED it. They were incredibly angry at me when I began to move toward mental and emotional health instead of the dysfunction of my family. Jesus was leading and I was following - and people told me I was going crazy. I love this explanation from Bishop Barron! It encourages me to think that the rejection I encounter is caused - at least in part - because I AM following Christ. My goal is to be sure that I am presenting Jesus faithfully and kindly so that they are reacting to the message and not to me being rude or pushy. Come, Lord Jesus!

True story. I was once called a radical traditionalist and a heretical liberal in the same Facebook thread (and they were responding to the same post.) But the original post that they were responding to was just a quote from the catechism. It was epic!

A passage out of context can be a very dangerous thing. Not saying you were wrong. Just worth remembering, when using catechism or even scripture

@@growtocycle6992 You're not wrong. I phrased what I said here poorly. When I said that the post was "just a quote from the catechism" I meant that I hadn't posted anything from the fringes of Catholicism (or even Christianity in general). I actually did provide context with the post. ... And like I said, you're not wrong. I've been in ministry for over a decade and I learned that lesson the hard way YEARS ago. I once had a post that reached almost 100,000 people. But I had posted something out of context. Oh boy. I had thousands of people yelling at me. Lesson learned.

I almost fell in the wrong interpretation of this Gospel. A schoolmate in the university here in Manila cited the verse to prove Jesus was a trouble maker and a home breaker. This was in the 80s. Thank God to the Legion of Mary in my parish. I got the right interpretation under the guidance of the HS. Thanks Bp. B

Always so good - I mean that, but the hot button issues the Bishop mentions early in the talk do not mention the defence of Christian Marriage. That... that is the point of crucifixion for any Western preacher today. That is the real societal challenge in the 'world gone wrong' that is the world we minister into in the West today. There is the challenge. Some of us need to be really brave and thought through, because all of our problems in the West... and in the UK where I am an Anglican priest.... well...that is where our problems start. So, many thanks to you all at Word on Fire - keep going for God's sake. You are a light in the darkness to us.

May the Lord continue to sustain Bishop Barron with good mental and physical health, that he may continue to speak ardently and without dissemblance the truth of the Logos, and reach the depths of our hearts and minds. I liked the part where you said when Jesus lights a fire in your soul He is getting rid of things that disagree with human nature which sins. We get rid of the sinfulness to make way for the beauty. If God decides that I shouldn't live this way or that way and He decides to get rid of one person or another, it also means He has something better in His mind for me, and I need to allow Him the space to do His work.

Another fine sermon, Bishop Barron. How relevant to remind us that. to speak truth, you will be not only opposed, but set against. Indeed, says Bishop Barron, in expecting it, let such opposion edify you. Fuzzy, feel-good universal acclaim? If this is your response, you are failing to speak truth. What a sustaining message. Thank you.
