Let it fly! The First Plowable Snow of the Season

It's the first plowable snow of the season! A couple inches of snow with rain to make it nice and heavy. It's a good time to take the plows out and clear the railroad. We start with a coupler pocket Plow and then move up to the Russell Plow to push the banks back. Enjoy the run!

Ya did great!!! I’m sure if it wasn’t for the snowy slushy build up on the switch you would’ve had a 100% clean run with no derailments,, with that I’m giving you a 99.5% 👍🏻😂😂😂 THANKS! Ron

I'd recommend keeping a basic tool kit and first aid kit including a tourniquet in the engine. A couple of multi-bit screwdrivers, a couple pliers, a small ratchet set including the proper sized hex bit to tighten up tracks, a hammer and hatchet. Possibly 2-3 ratchet straps, 7-10 foot in length. A $20-30 first aid kit would also be wise. Most everything you might rarely use. These basic tools on-hand mean that smaller jobs can be done in the field saving the time of going back for tools. The ratchet straps and hatchet may be enough to get a small fallen tree off the tracks. And you never know how 2-3 ratchet straps will come in useful. The first aid kit and tourniquet is something I hope you'd never need to use. But an injury on the other side of the property may take awhile to get back to the house, especially with a leg, knee, hip, foot and/or back injury. The tourniquet in case of a major cut. $50 in medical supplies could be a life saver. My medical kit for my 5th wheel probably has over $250 in supplies. I hope to never need to use it, but camping often means dozens of miles or more from a hospital. My truck, my wife's SUV and our little 12 foot john boat all carry at least a basic store bought first aid kit.

Scarface (the plow) was jealous of Mini plow, but got a chance to extend her wings after long summer sleep. Hope you enjoyed hot coffee cream in Creamy Caramel station that looks cozy by the way. Something that might help, they sell a wax (or silicone, not sure) spray for snowblowers that is supposed to minimize snow buildup and sticking, spray your plows and it might help reduce the resistance. Not much you can do with wet heavy snow, though. Glad to see you have an official switch broom!

I was thinking the exact same thing. Either put some car wax on the plow or some silicone spray. Anything to help the snow slide off of it. I think you’ll find it will make a big difference.

When you started ploughing from the engine house end, a pot of coffee could have been placed on a slow simmer so there was a warm drink when you got back there. Same thing to be considered when waiting for your steam loco to reach pressure. Drink coffee and the pressure rises quicker , (or seems to). Another idea from the (full sized railways) U.K., ( many years ago), was that if you stood a steam loco over your point-work, it melted the snow/ice. Also there was a valve fitted to the smoke box area where a steam lance could be fitted to blow out snow from point blades etc. Regards, Paul in Cornwall U.K.

Snow and ice are very unpredictable at times. The warmer it is when it falls, the wetter it becomes. The wetter it becomes, the less it compresses. Then, when the temperature drops below freezing again at night, it turns into ice. The transition periods are the worst. You need to scrape the snow off quickly, and you need to beat the freezing temperatures. It's the combination of speed and continually changing conditions that makes it so dangerous. High country snow, on the other hand, is usually colder when it falls. That means more air is in each snowflake, and it is easier to push aside. It also compresses more easily. It is still important to scrape it off the rails quickly, but colder snow is more forgiving. We used to get more of the colder snow than we do now.

Full size railroads don't really use rotary snow plows all that much anymore. It's almost all pilot plows, flangers, ballast spreaders, and in the rare case, 2-stage snow blowers. Getting the rotary out is a rare occurrence, even on UP.

What is the battery life under heavy loading like that? (Obviously, "long enough," but just curious as to whether a battery change had to be edited out.... 🙂) I can't believe the chickens were out in the snow! I thought they'd be hiding in their coop! I noticed in a few places, the one plow was tossing the snow right back onto the other track that had already been plowed. Will you have to be playing ping-pong with that all winter?
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 7 ай бұрын
There is plenty of capacity in the battery pack to cover six hours of heavy running. If you're still plowing after that, then you need a bigger locomotive and probably a lunch break. I have never had a video where I've had to stop to charge the loco. The camera, in the other hand. Now, that's a different story. The chickens are pretty tough birds. The places where I'm throwing snow on the other track get cleared eventually. Either by shovel or by plow or by melting.

why don't you just automatically double head when plowing with either plow. Wouldn't that eliminate the backing up and slamming into the snow? I know you can only sit on one at a time, but wouldn't the light engine on the rear still offer enough push to help get you through that heavy snow? Just curious. And that was a good kick on the tank car into the siding! :)
