The extra length of the handle allows you to swing it with more velocity. Like a whip. Try it with a long handle knife held at the base and compare it to a knife with a shorter handle. I’m not a physicist but you can def swing the mf faster if it has a long handle

At 7:35, success ! I'm with you on the sheaths.Even 20 years ago some not-too-cheap knives came with disappointing leather sheaths. Most always have retention straps that are too short ! Give it at least an inch past the connecting device. Yeah, kydex is more durable but I still like a GOOD leather sheath.

I'm currently in the market for a milk & water apocalypse knife & this looks like a winner! I own several Condors & all have required some edge work out of the box - nothing serious mostly touch-up/stropping. I find Condor knives great value and I never hesitate to use them - these are no safe queens. Agree with Pete - looks like a great camp/field/utility fixed blade. Re. sheath. My Condor leather sheaths are good quality and have lasted (with the occasional use of leather conditioner). This one however looks to be slightly lower grade - might be using bonded leather which tends to feel bit bit like cardboard. Thanks for another great vid.

Even though it didn't come very sharp, it was far sharper than any of the three Condors I bought. I couldn't even cut myself with them, let alone cut paper. I could draw the edge across my palm with pressure, and no cut. They were duller than a butter knife. They have a lot of good designs, but they do not know how to sharpen them. If you don't mind sharpening them before you can use them however, they are a pretty decent value. They have a lot of designs that I really like.

@@brawndothethirstmutilator9848 I would agree that Condor remains a little iffy on QC, at least compared to Cold Steel, but I think they're better than they used to be. As much as I like the look of this knife, I'd have to buy an Old Hickory (OKC) 7025 18cm (30cm overall) Butcher's knife in 1095. 3mm, .118 thick, a little under 1/8th inch, .125 makes a great slicer, but I'd be very careful on splitting wood with it as I see you were. Also for sticky snaps a bit of wax from a candle works pretty good and it will get looser soon enough, probably plated steel.

My current go-to batoning knife is a SOG in .125" 7cr, and it's been fine, good even. The edge has never chipped, or even rolled, and I've also twisted and pryed it out when it was stuck fully expecting it to break. I don't have a ton of experience with 1095. Are you genuinely telling me that 1095 wouldn't hold up to what my $20 7cr Chinese SOG will, or is your experience more based on reading forums than using knives?
@MountainFisher
@MountainFisher 2 жыл бұрын
@@CNYKnifeNerd I have made knives since 1992 and I'll stand by what I said. 1095 is a simple high carbon steel, the number tells you what it's composed of, .95% carbon, same as many steels like O1 or 440C. If you're Chinesium steel doesn't break it's because it is only around Rc56-58 hard and .70% carbon. At the same hardness 1095 would be fine for batoning, but at Rc60+ I'd be careful using it for splitting wood unless it was thicker because it isn't just hardness that causes brittleness. Higher carbon 1095 if not heat treated right will have what is called retained austenite and that is what can cause brittleness, that and its shape. I would guess your knife isn't hollow ground, not the best shape for splitting wood, would get stuck a lot. Ever slice carrots with a hollow grind? Your 7Cr14MoV can be heat treated much harder than they typically do and it should be, but mass produced knives are seldom maximized to their best parameters. Because it is lower carbon at .70% and has a small .2% more or less of vanadium its grain structure will be very fine, that is what small amounts of vanadium does, it doesn't start making vanadium carbides in that high Cr matrix until it is at least 2.00% V. The low carbon content will also prevent the formation of too many chromium carbides which would also make it brittle. I tell people if they want to split wood a hatchet works a lot better than using a knife to do it, but if they want me to make a thin knife I'll use 14C28N which is very tough, far surpassing 7Cr and especially 1095, if made from a high carbon steel I'd make it out of 15N20 a high nickel steel which is what they make bandsaw blades for sawmills. Very tough can also use L6, but it's not usually available thin enough. FYI I also used to be the heat treater for a large machine shop among my other duties. Before I went to work there I had only ever HT 3 steels O1, 440C and D2. I started making knives using a charcoal forge and O1. I only use O1 with the .20% vanadium, restricts grain growth better.

16:05 I’d argue the flexy flat stock scandi Condor at 50-55 RC is more “durable” than the thin tipped flat ground Esee 6 at 55-57 RC. Today in the US on Amazon the Condor is $104, Esee 6 is $131, Esee 6HM is $118, and the BK7 is $112. The 6HM has by far the best sheath, so if knife/sheath/price are the top 3 priorities thats the pick. Also, the Terävä Skrama 200 and Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140 are excellent hard-use indestructible options, and if sharpened correctly* they can be kept razor sharp in the field with only a double sided strop (Tormek paste on one side, bare smooth leather on the other) *Using large flat diamond hones, remove the machine marks and zero the scandi edge, switch to 3M honing paper stuck to glass, work up to 1500 grit, strop it with Tormek paste.. keep stropping a tiny convex into the edge until you can pound it through a pine 2x4 without any dings appearing. Always keep the scandi flat on the strop.. never ever raise it up onto the edge or else it’ll round over too blunt. A zero-scandi cuts wood - and everything else - better, but its too delicate and “dives” into wood when only a shave/featherstick is wanted.. a tiny convex greatly increases durability and allows for greater control. That method would apply to this Condor as well.

the Condor blades are allways clearcoated even the edges,just use some aceton and steelwool and paper. they gunk upp stones and strops. And the long handle is for more power when chopping, holding further back. That has been fashion a long time now. many sheats is of bader quality these days,maybe it is the c19 thing and delivering of raw materials. The ESEE 6 is a very small survival knife, the Junglas is a survival knife,the 6 with the stupid finger choil thing takes away too much of the best and usable edge. It is too small to need a choil in the first place because it is not a chopping blade.

For the same money I have an old hickory (leather grip and palm swell), a condor terrasaur and an opinel 9 all of about the same steel 1095. I think condor is missing the price point on this one.

I've just enjoyed watching your M7 vs. Apocalypse vid. Have you ever been tempted by the beautiful and monstrous and fairly inexpensive OKC Bushcraft Woodsman? It always puts a smile on my face! I'd very much like to get your opinion ... unless you don't rate it, in which case I'll unsubscribe because I've bought one! : )
