Why do you need it to be mainstream? You can use it to animate your character and bake the animation to your own rig inside Maya. It's impossible for it to become the tool for animation like Maya. There are still many limitations and a lack of features, but it's probable that it will become a plugin for Maya.

However, my point is that the software alone is incomplete and requires a 3D package to function properly. Clearly, Maya is the most robust option for animation.
