This week, a most personal episode for me to present one of my heroes on bass: the Legendary Bob Cranshaw. Let's explore his amazing career from being a first-call Jazz legend to being heard on televisions around the world. His legacy is huge, and you should definitely know more about this amazing man.
CORRECTION: Many, many thanks to Mrs. Bobbi Cranshaw for reaching out to me after seeing this video! Bob's brother Stanley played PIANO, not saxophone.
Special thanks to the JAZZ VIDEO GUY for allowing me to use some of his one-on-one clips with Bob and Sonny Rollins. Please visit his page! The most COMPREHENSIVE source for original Jazz content on KZfaq: / jazzvideoguy

Thank you so very much for this beautiful tribute. Bob was my uncle - his widow is my dad's sister. I am a guitar player and music professor and Bob was, without doubt, the single most important musical mentor of my life. I don't know if I would have a career in music now without his guidance. I love him dearly and your video moved me so much. Thank you!

I met Bob years ago at the Local 802 community room. He was playing a pro bono gig in support of affordable housing in New York. His wife, my friend Bobbi Cranshaw, invited me to Bob's memorial at St. Peter's Church in Manhattan. What a glorious send-off his friends gave him. Thank you for this wonderful tribute to a great musician and an exemplary human being.

Thank you thank you. Bob Cranshaw was my Dad's best friend. They grew up in Evanston, IL and stayed in touch until he died. In fact it was Cranshaw and his wife who helped me find my home in NYC. I lived across the street from them! I appreciate you making this documentary!!

One of the absolute greatest jazz double bassists ever recorded. His work during Blue Note's Golden Age, as well as other labels is legendary. He is quite underrated as one of the titans of New York sessions. The accolades for his work are many and varied. But even more so noteworthy is how he branched out in so many different venues. Rest in peace Mr. Cranshaw. Your body of work will never be forgotten. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

Paul: that was a beautiful tribute. I’ve always loved Bob’s playing on both electric and double. He was always one of the BIG guys. His presence on an album alone was enough for me to buy it. I never knew you had such a close relationship with him. I don’t think you could have had a better champion in your corner. You honor him with both your words and your playing. Bravo.

Yeah man l remember seeing Bob on every BlueNote record that came out. I have no doubt Bobby heard your vast talent from day one when he told you you were the cat. I truly celebrate your brave sincere and touching video. Most people tend to replace sincerity with flash. You touched me by reminding me of my relationship with my mentor the wonderful Cecil McBee. I thank you for that. Unfortunately, we've lost contact.

Watching this as a learning bass player, the first jazz CD that caught my ear was Sonny Rollins, with Sunday mornings filled with MJQ in our house. Halloween just passed and I made a Bat costume with an additional 3 feet wingspan to my arm span (even though I'm 46), as outside of music I've always loved making costumes. Jim Henson was my hero and the first passing of a public figure that really hit me. After that beautiful tribute, hearing 1234568910 11 12 just glued it all together. Thank you

This was a beautiful, moving tribute to a major figure in jazz who, to my shame, I’d not really registered before. Thank so you much! Paul, it is abundantly clear that you are seeking to “pay it forward”, in exactly the way that Milt Hinton did for Bob Cranshaw, and that Bob in turn has done for you and so many others. I want to assure you that you are indeed doing just that. Your channel elevates me and my spirit, and I’m sure does for so many of the rest of us bassists out here who are lucky enough to have subscribed to your channel. I’ve just shown several of your videos to a friend of mine who isn’t a musician (let alone a bassist), and he found them fascinating. He was also (like me) in tears watching this - at the end of the video he turned to me and said of you “what a lovely man”. I said “he sure is”. Thank you for all you do.
