The Fantastic Four are off on a new adventure not from Marvel Comics but through Abrams Comic Arts under the header Marvel Arts. Alex Ross writes and illustrates a story continuing a classic F4 outing started by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. It's a journey into the Negative Zone as the team follow up on This Man This Monster, a story that saw The Thing's body being duplicated by an envious villain. Does this classic comic story get the ending it deserves? Does this licensed work hold up against regular Marvel fare? We discuss it all here as we dive into Fantastic Four Full Circle here on Casually Comics!

Something I really wish Marvel explored more with is The Thing's skill as an engineer. He isn't a super genius like Reeds, but he WAS the guy who actually put together the rocket Reeds designed. Building rockets ain't like putting together an IKEA shelf; it's not just about brainlessly following instructions. You need to be a skilled technician with a mind for machinery to pull that off. Reminding people that Ben was so very skilled with his hands would also add an extra level of tragedy to his character, since his huge golem fingers would be incapable of the precision necessary to keep fulfilling that passion. Ben was a man who like to build things, yet all he can do now is break things.

I seem to recall at least one issue where someone (probably Reed) had built him a pair of waldos (robotic arms, if that's Greek to people) with neural controls so that he could do fine work with them. IIRC he was building a ship in a bottle with them. That was a long, long time ago and I think they got smashed during the story and I haven't seen them since. It seems like such an obvious quality of life thing for Ben to have, and the setting certainly has the tech for it.

This book is a legitimate work of art. It deserves all the awards. I too teared up a little. I think the thing that hits so hard about the story is the SINCERITY. Sincerity is something that has been sorely lacking in modern comics, as you mentioned-- stories are mostly flippant tongue in cheek subversion, glib attempts at meta-deconstruction or all out mean-spirited satire. Everything about this book is beautiful and it made me feel the way comics used to.

I don't prefer Alex Ross's art style. However, I can recognize talent when I see it. Personally, his style is too 50s-60s retro style, all his faces look the same, his female faces are just toned down male faces. I don't prefer his version of super hero muscles. They look like old timey circus strong men instead of well-defined super heroes. However, like I said, Ross does have talent. His following is understandable. I do like some of his realistic art for superheroes. His debut in the 90s was nothing less than stunning.

Jim Lee is a great artist, but suffers from same face/body syndrome. I personally think that there are several artists that are significantly better than him like Dan Mora and Jorge Jimenez. I don't think that he's bad, I just think he's a bit overhyped and outdone given the modern comics landscape

My favorite thing about Alex Ross art is trying to figure out who he modelled his faces after. In this one, I think Reed and Sue were based on Gary Conway and Deanna Lund from "Land of the Giants". I'm less sure about Johnny but he may be modelled on Dwayne Hickman from "Dobie Gillis". Jones looks a bit like boxer Nikolai Valuev. Just guessing.

Just a superb analysis of this wonderful Alex Ross book. Even better, a spirited defense of Reed Richards, a character that has been pummeled by writers and fandom in the last decade or two. I was nine years old when I read FANTASTIC FOUR #51 and I remember that it made me cry for the "villain's" sacrifice after his stunning revelation of just how good a man Reed is. It wasn't the first nor the last time I shed tears at a Silver Age Marvel comic. Ross gets it and you get it, Sasha. Thanks for your commentary.

13:33 This line immediately made me think of the themes explored in SCP 3930 (look it up, it takes about 5 minutes to read). Specifically, the concept of a person existing only as an "echo" in the perception of others. I know that the Nega-Zone (and this type of echo) is wildly different to the "Nothing" described in the SCP file, but it still feels like there's a way to intertwine these ideas...

16:51 This is why most of the brilliant scientists in the Lovecraft universe go insane. It's not JUST perceiving the horrors beyond our reality... it's being unable to stop contemplating them and their implications. No Lovecraft protagonist ever as a mindset like Ben's, because if they did they'd go "huh, neat. Not anything I can do about it though so whatever" and go on living happily. It's not just Reed's brilliance that makes him obsess over these implications, though. It's also his arrogance. His NEED to be significant and his inability to accept his small spot in a big, impossibly complex universe. Then there's Dr. Doom, who's just SO self-obsessed he'd probably interpret his own insignificance as a challenge. "The cosmic gods will learn to _fear_ the name DOOM!"

Sasha, Yaboizack sent me here to check your new video. I loved your review and the shots sampling the book. It has been more than 30 years (I’m 46) since I last bought a comic book. The very last paper story I purchased was the Hellraiser graphic comics back in 1992. Your video made me order a copy of this Alex Ross book. I remember reading Ricardo and Nega-man stories when I was 8, 9 years old, so this hit my heart right in the center. I’m in Japan and will have to wait a while, but I am sure I’ll cherish this as much you and your kids did. Thank you Sasha, and heads up to Mr Meyer sending you respect ;)

I loved this comic. Part of that is because Fantastic Four 51 was one of the first FF comics I ever read (in a collected edition, of course), and it’s what got me to really love the team. I think my only complaint is that I wish there was more of it, but it didn’t really need more story, so that’s okay! Also, it was so heartwarming to hear that your kids liked it! Alex Ross is the ultimate uber-nerd who I know that if I met in person we'd totally be besties. The dude literally loves and respects most of the things I do, from the more mainstream stuff to the obscure. But he's also been an artist that I've never lived for his art style, as much as I love that man. It kills me because I've bought multiple books of his because I want to support him and really do want to embrace his geekdom with him, but I just can't get over his art sensibilities. So I'm at a weird place with him. Ironically, I think I relate more to his producing/writing side than what he's most famous for. Off topic, I hope you do an update video on the SusanVSFlatline drama.

I remember first reading a reprint of 'This Man This Monster' in Les Daniels' seminal history book 'Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics' (still well worth tracking down if you can find it, but I digress); where it was accompanied by a John Byrne quote that always stuck with me: '...If this is an art form, if we can be that lofty, then Stan Lee and Jack Kirby have created a masterpiece there...'. All these decades on, it's fantastic to see that Alex Ross has created a more-than-worthy successor, and that Sasha in turn has done such an equally fantastic job with this review, yes...?

He'd just failed at changing Ben back to normal. Reed got very intraceptive. On his thoughts he reveals the reason for his creation of the FF. He did it for Ben because he would be labeled by society, and Reed thought that he'd prefer Hero over Monster.

An excellent analysis! You have such a fantastic understanding of this team and their history. I've been a Fantastic Four fan forever but this video contained many new insights for me. I've purchased Full Circle but haven't read yet but now I'm super-excited to get started.

Speaking of Fantastic 4 have you met B-Mask who did that really great fantastic 4 retrospective? And seems to maybe be working on soemthing similar for what I'm 90% sure is the Thunderbolts.

Sasha, you fab person, I simply bought it, because of what obviously is, as a piece, but also because of your, as always, great review and commentary on everything that it is. Thank you, special person, keep up the excellent work.

I just rewatched Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Seeing the panel where Reed has a beard makes the movie Reed more acceptable.

I hadn’t heard of this book, but I’m definitely going to check it out. I’ve always had a soft spot for the FF.
