Aeolian Hall

14 жыл бұрын

Here is a wonderful performance by Constance Mering of one of Cole Porter's first big hits "Lets Do It" from the show "Paris" You will notice that some of the original lyrics are not used anymore...
Also, please let me explain one of Porter's clever puns that most people do not get nowadays. People from Lithuania are called Lithuanians, however people from Latvia are not always called Latvians; they can be called Letts. Now you can understand the lyric "Lituanians and Letts do it, let's do it, let's fall in love.,

It is a paper roll with holes punched in it, and when you put it in a player piano, you can play it. A player piano is a regular piano with the added feature to play automatically. It typically looks like a big old piano, but there are sliding doors in the front and you put the roll in there. You might like some other of my videos. Thanks for writing

If my grandma were still alive, that song and roll would probably be the single inanimate thing that she'd love the most. She was born that year, June 21, 1929, died January 2, 2012. 81 years old, she would've been 82 tomorrow. Explains why I like this song so much, I knew there had to be somthing special about it. Aside the "hidden" joke in the lyrics.

Because they used to DANCE the fox trot... The slow mushy readings of many of these 20s Jazz Age classics came along much later when the WWII GIs of the 1940s wanted to "cling" a bit more to their dates!

I think you're right about the Lett pun. I got it first time I heard the song, but then I am quite linguistically minded and sort of knew a person from Latvia could be called a Lett already. When we were listening to the new Ella album and the song came on, I pointed out how clever that pun is to my wife, who knows the song really well, and she thought I was just making it up, so I had to explain to her how Latvia is also called Lettland in several languages: the land of the Letts.

I will enlighten you: it's a player piano. Sheet rolls (of music) are placed in like a paper towel rack and the piano plays the music piece all by itself using the holes as instructions. I predict it will catch on in the future because all of us here in 1929 love it.

Although these rolls are occasionally recut, they leave out the lyrics, although you can write them in yourself. If you want the old, original rolls, there are roll auctions where you can buy them. Go to Mechanical Music Digest on the net and you will find lists of people who have roll auctions

Ilyen volt a második pianínóm:) Még kottáim ma is vannak hozzá. A levegőt alulról egyenletesen két lábpedállal kellett bejuttatni, a zongorába. Sokat pedáloztam, míg hallgattam egy-egy dalt:)

It gives a guide on how much vacuum you should be generating by pumping the pedals. In a loud section, you have to pedals faster to make the piano play louder.

At the end of the roll, the number 2812 is printed. That means that this roll was made in Dec. 1928, so the song was probably introduced early in 1928.

I think it's from an old player piano. The music ran through the piano and it used those marks to play the music. Kind of like the way a music box plays music but on a piano.

hehe, the song caught my attention only because of that 'lithuanians do it, letts do it' bit because i'm from latvia myself. nobody really uses letts anymore, though, that's a rather archaic thing that originated back when germans used to govern here, i think. /random history fact

@sineadiloveyou I don't really thing it's an appropriate reaction that someone should get upset that a movie introduced people to music. If anything, it's more beneficial for Cole Porter that many people now are familiar with him thanks to Woody Allen. If "Midnight in Paris" didn't have this song on its soundtrack, the amount of people who know Cole Porter would be a lot smaller than what it is now. Music should be embraced for what it is and who made it.
