In this art chat session, watch as I draw a few mushrooms in my sketchbook and chat about materials, textures, and always embracing the imperfectness of your sketchbook practice.
Materials used include:
• Art Creations sketchbook
• Holbein acryl gouache in navy blue, titanium white, coral red, jaune brilliant, and pale peach
• Caran d'Ache Neocolors II in English Red
• Caran d'Ache Luminance Colored Pencil in Prussian Blue
• Holbein Colored Pencils in Luminous Red and Coral
• Caran d'Ache Neopastels in white, orangish yellow, granite rose, and salmon

Why did you choose acrylic gouache over water based gouache? Thank you for sharing your approach to mixed media.

Only because I wanted to use that coral red color and I only had it in acrylic gouache 😂 In general, I use water based gouache more often but I've found myself reaching for acrylic gouache more and more lately. I love them both!

Your channel came up, loving your videos. I’ll have to look for the children’s book you illustrated for my niece! I started painting in oils, then acrylics over 40 years ago. Now, I;m loving my watercolors, gouache, colored pencils, etc…many of the same mixed media materials you use. I Love everything Caran d’ache and Holbein 😊 love drawing and painting mushrooms. All my mushrooms are from my head, not realistic at all…I’ve recently bought a reference book because I want to draw more realistic mushrooms. The reference book you had looks very interesting and the photos are larger than I’ve seen. May I ask the name of the book? It looks like it may be from DK publishing? The larger photos would help with drawing details! I appreciate it! (I have the Sennelier oil pastels, I found them at an art sale, love the rich colors, but too sticky for me. Illl have to try the CD’s). The mushrooms came out great!

Yeah give the Caran d'Ache Neopastels a try. They are far less sticky, which was my whole problem with the Senneliers too :) The book is a DK book called Mushrooms: How to Identify and Gather Wild Mushrooms and Other Fungi. It's a lovely reference!
