In this week’s episode, I take a deep dive into my health and some of the big changes that I’ve made in my life that have done wonders for my mental and physical health, which, of course, only enhances the horsemanship aspect. It’s all too common in the equestrian world that we overlook our personal health and even joke about how much we give our horses, but wouldn’t dream of doing for ourselves. So, maybe this episode will inspire some ideas in you of how you can help your horse by helping yourself.

I like these kind of episodes! They make me think about what I can do to help myself so that I can have a better relationship with my mare. This episode in particular helped me feel less guilty about not spending a ton of time with my horse since the start of this year. Work was stressing me out (I left that job, thankfully), and I needed to get to a point where I could at least start recovering from burn out. I'm now starting to recover from burn out and finally able to start giving more of my time to horse.

Thank you so so much for opening up about all of this and being vulnerable and standing up for yourself. This podcast brought up so many feelings for me and there are a lot of similarities in our life journey at the moment.

I have to get second opinions about my health and I have learned that sometimes looking “weird” is ok. Example: I’m at work on the floor stretching right now bc I hurt from sitting at my desk chair. Yes I like this type of episodes, I like to be made to think about stuff that might make my relationship with animals better.

Elsa Rhae & Barron here on KZfaq JUST made a podcast talking about the same things regarding periods and BC, including those books. Might have to actually buy them and look more into this. As a woman, it's pretty ridiculous how little I know about my own body and cycle. Anyway, I enjoy both the horsey and personal topics! :-)

Excellent podcast! I have a friend that struggles like you with her health - it is an ongoing adventure. I love that you are trying to slow your catapult into adulthood - there is plenty of time ahead of you. I am playing with the woo with my horse and finding immediate and undeniable responses. This week while he was eating his supplements I started breathing in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4 and hold for 4 - he stopped eating, looked directly at me and started huge yawns and his whole body was twitching. This was after 3 days of high wind and not fun kite/horse flying. I too love Warwick Schiller and have been sliding down the rabbit hole of woo and learning to observe and not judge. On one windy day I spent our grazing walk commentating on his behaviour/body language in observational tones rather than judgement. That was just to keep me out of my own head. Keep going, I will listen and learn!

I’m the same way. Why not both? Science/R+ is great, but it’s not everything. Horses can 100% read energy. Also, I started buying crystals because I thought they were pretty and now I’m addicted 😅 I love all the different kinds and they’re kinda just pretty decorations lol

I really really liked this episode, I have also recently gone on a "health discovery, why is my skin like this, what is going on with my body?" journey and one of the main reasons why was because of how stressed I got about not succeeding during my rides and especially in my lessons and I just got this immense anxiety before I would go to the barn and listening to this episode among other things has helped reinforce that riding isn't the stressor and I should be taking care of myself regardless of how it reflects in my functionality. Also I have adhd as well and something for me recently has been honouring that, and letting myself be inspite of the fact that I am medicated I'm allowed to still forget things and I don't need to have an inferiority complex about it. I also think I have to cut out dairy soon cause *holds up peace sign* female hormone tingz.

I enjoyed this so much Jill. I relate so much. I have Hidradenitis Supprativa. I have to be on an anti inflammatory diet and Humira. I own a horse and work and teach at the barn and so many things aggravate it. Learning how to take care of yourself is HARD. I also related to when you were talking about “rushing” towards a career. Me too. Lol 😂. I have an undergrad in Psych pre OT and want to get my MOT. And my family encourages the “rushing”. But for my mental health, and happiness; I plunged head long into working at the barn and it’s been really helpful for me. I keep my own foods at the barn and that’s also helped me from not eating things I shouldn’t just because I’m hungry. I hope you continue to feel better and learn how to care for your body. Also, YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL 💖

Heyy I really enjoyed the episode! First time I listened again in a really long time. I cleaned the paddock and spend some time with my horse while listening, I was gonna lunge him but he said no so we just went for a walk. I really enjoy these types of episodes to as I relate to a lot of what you talked about. I recently quit my birthcontrol as well. Last year I tried to quit but my acne got so bad I caved and went back on it but this year when I quit my acne wasn’t quite as bad, likely due to my diet. I don’t think about what I eat to much cause it really annoys be tbh but I’m glad that you find it helps you:) the whole mental health thing is also something I’ve struggled with over the years and quitting birthcontrol has definitely had some kind of effect on it, I think for the better but I’m not sure yet, time will tell. Anyways if you read it this far I’m glad the podcast is back and this episode has really made me think and realise some things about myself and my relationship with my horse as well so thank you for that! Have a great day

Congratulations on putting yourself first and learning what you need to do, to eat and be to thrive! It's wonderful that Azula inspires you to be courageous and be who you want to be. I've watched that Warwick Schiller video a couple of times. I think the difference is his energy, it's calm and accepting, while being aware. He attunes to horses, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. And yes, being in a calm and aware state of being is more about what you do away from the horse, meditation, breath work, relaxation techniques, etc. There is absolutely something magical about horses and if we open to the magic, beautiful things happen! I've been away from horses for quite some time and looking to get back into it. I started watching YT horse training videos and wasn't finding quite the right fit. I like the positive reinforcement, I've done it with dogs, yet I knew there was more to building the relationship and connection. I wanted a softer way, something with more attention and awareness with the horse, allowing them to be themselves . Initially, I watched a few of WS's old videos and decided his method wasn't for me. Several months passed and my inner voice was encouraging me to watch another of his videos, something more recent. I kept questioning why, however I eventually went ahead and watched his CAT-H video. I'm really glad I listened to my intuition. From there the videos kept getting better and better, more focus on listening and paying attention to the horse. I love how he's integrating what he's learning about himself and how it affects the horse. Like you, I give him a lot of credit for sharing his story and being vulnerable, (same for you!). Both you and WS are onto something and I'm here for it!

There are a few new age Spirituality ppl or animal ppl who anthropomorphize that's a fair point If u read about east vs west philosophy... Alan Watts lectures would be easy to listen to.... It helped me bridge that gap that I think you're talking about... Such that I didn't feel so "woo woo" or skeptical of myself/those topics that I was curious about in respect to horses and their sentience and consciousness and being open to it / not feeling super awks with more traditionally minded people who will think it's "ridiculous" or even demonic or pagan hahaha Like some ppl truly believe that certain yoga poses, like warrior 1 etc, are literally demonic and spiritually bad. Which imo is ofc ridiculous..... And kinda hilarious... But I getcha it's easier to just not be open about ur curiosities when you're surrounded by people who are focused only on what is very flat in your face see-able "Keep ur ideas to urself until they are fully manifested" Ur questions Ur curiosities Ur dreams Ur goals Ur projects 🤩😉

I love this so much!! I’m in a very similar place in my own path and it was very relatable to hear you talk about many of the same things I’ve been working through. Also, if you haven’t listened to Jane Pike’s podcast you should. She’s awesome and she’s a friend of Warwick which was how I found his new stuff.
