For this series I’ll be taking you with me through NYC to various Music Stores. Sifting through CD’s, vinyl, and whatever else the stores have to offer. Then at the end I’ll un-bag the loot and discuss why I chose the ones I did. Come on…let’s go to the record store!

Well with over 250 locations I’m not surprised! I do like the park locations best. The ones in freestanding buildings as opposed to just ones on the ground floor of a building or larger establishment. But that’s because I started with this location in Madison Sq Park so I have fond memories of it as the first.

I'm surprised that not finding much you want or need doesn't happen more often considering how much you've already got. It frequently happens to me and I've only only got about 2,400 CDs. But I guess it's a function of how much you want and unless I think really want to listen to something multiple times I tend not to want it taking up space. I continue to really enjoy these episodes of going to stores though. Fun stuff. Thanks.

Well if you watched the previous visit to Bookoff, even though I found 17 items, most were compilations because I already own whole catalogues of those artists. It does happen on every trip but usually I find 3 to 4 items. This was a rarity that I only walked out with one and that it was a compilation without anything special. But it does happen and that’s ok. I’m sure the next visit will make up for it.

Yes I’m not a fan at all of the cardboard or digipaks. If you watch enough of my videos you’ll see me rant about it. My biggest issue is that if it gets damaged you can’t replace it like you can a jewel case. I don’t like how easily they can get damaged in shipping too.

Looks like another cool place to buy records and cd's. That Stiltskin cd from 1994 you showed us is very rare and hard to find. You cannot even stream the album at Apple/iTunes, Amazon or Google Play. I wonder how much that cd was? I couldn't see the price sticker (blurry.) Very rare to see the Box of Frogs cd, too. $12.99 for a 2 on 1 cd, or was the price even more than that? I'd say $13 is not too bad of a price, given the fact that I never see that album, especially when it's on cd. Glad it was you and not me that went in there. I would have been in there browsing until the time the place closed for the day. And I'd likely leave the place with an empty wallet. Hope you got to pick up a bite to eat at one of those concession stands or food trucks you passed on your way over there.
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 2 жыл бұрын
The prices of most items were accurate in that they are out of print and rare editions. But the average person won’t know that and the prices may be too high for someone to take a chance on it if they don’t know exactly what they are getting. So it limits who will buy it which is not what they should be doing. But yes the Stiltskin with Ray Wilson (Genesis) is very hard to find and also very good.

Great video Brendon. You should do more of these. How far is the park from the current MSG site? I lived in Nashville for 11 years, but never made it up to NY. No reason…I just loved where I was living too much to venture away lol. Also really enjoy seeing these different record stores. I’d lose hours. It’s nice to see places you wouldn’t otherwise know exist. I know they aren’t something you’d normally cover on the channel, but have you ever heard that Crowded House album from the video? Perfect stylised pop music. They are kiwis but they may as well be an Aussie band….have a huge soft spot for them. Cheers from Sydney 👍

Koo Koo was fun but it wasn't her greatest solo work. Def Dumb and Blonde was Deb's high point I think solo-wise. Rockbird was ok. There's one Debs CD that has a good compilation of that "disco" period solo Debs remixes plus some of the Blondie remixes as well. That's worth seeking out.

That was cool. I always enjoying seeing the sights on your trips in New York City. I really love that Box Of Frogs album, and Rough Mix, by Ronnie Lane and Pete Townsend, and I actually prefer Keith Richards solo albums over a lot of the latter-days Stones stuff. That's a nice find you got there. My son really likes Deborah Harry's KooKoo album, but I think it has more to do with the cover art by HR Giger, who he's a big fan of.
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 2 жыл бұрын
The cover art is really powerful. Album covers like that almost don’t exist today in the digital world. But back during vinyl, the big album cover was a big deal and the more striking the better. Especially if you’re looking to try and pull in new fans. And her album did just that.

I have that Keith Richards cd on vinyl, I bought it at Rebel Rebel records years ago. If you’re an older New Yorker, then you will know the record shop I’m talking about. Academy records on 18th doesn’t have the selection they use to have especially for records. They also jacked up the prices too much on common stuff. I miss the old store employees and Frank the manager. Your lucky you found one cd, I hardly ever find anything nowadays at Academy, 12 street Academy is the best and there not related businesses partners. Prediction for 2022, they will close by the end of the year, sorry but I can feel it when I walk in there. Manhattan needs more record stores.

Can you design us a new record store that actually has stuff like Tangerine Dream and John Mayall? I can't find one out here on Long Island. The stores here suck ass. The problem is I rarely buy "common" CDs or vinyl anymore, rock or pop, unless it's filling a major hole in the collection. I'm usually after more estoric stuff these days.

@@willd4731 I went to the orig. location or 2nd location about 7 years ago, the one in the industrial park, they had a phenomenal selection of CDs and vinyl at the time. The last time I went to the new Record Stop location, they had absolutely downsized, and the prices on some things were sky high, such as the Bowie New Career box set (which the mastering was botched on I might add). I mean the CD version of it. Anyway, as someone else mentioned they don't even have a blues section there. I wasn't super impressed the 2nd time. They do have some good old punk vinyl and metal there though.

Unfortunately the two artist you mention are rather non-mainstream and so most people aren’t going to be looking for their albums no matter how good they are. Stores have to stock what sells. It’s just the nature of the business even though we wish it was just based on good music.
@thiscorrosion900
@thiscorrosion900 2 жыл бұрын
@@BrendonSnyder Indeed that's true. But back when we had places like Tower or Virgin or Other Music, and whatnot in the city or NJ or elsewhere, you could find all kinds of esoteric and obscure artists. Nowadays, it's usually online or nothing, unless you're lucky enough to live in a place or city that still has some pretty far-out shops. LI doesn't even have a decent flea market any longer. Oy vey. I'm long past mainstream, myself, that's part of the problem in my case. Although as far as my guitar work goes, I still sit here and practice Boston and stuff like that...Genesis, YES, you name it, so go figure! Even Record World years ago sold a pretty wide range of music, including hardcore punk and SST and all that stuff.
