Today's refugee crisis is the biggest since World War II, and it's growing. When this talk was given, 50 million people had been forcefully displaced from their homes by conflict and war; as of 2021, the number grew to more than 82 million. There were three million Syrian refugees in 2014; now there are 5.5 million languishing in neighboring countries. Inside this overwhelming crisis are the individual human stories -- of care, growth and family, in the face of lost education, lost home, lost future. Melissa Fleming of the United Nations tells the refugees' stories -- and asks us to help them rebuild their world.
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Comparatively, it's far easier for Lebanon to take in Syrian refugees because their history, culture, genealogy, etc. are intimately related. Simply saying "everyone else should be like Lebanon" is facile.

I think we need to look past culture, race and religion when taking in refugees. Sure it might be easier for Lebanon, but all countries must learn the values of humanity.

I agree that she had told the vast majority of people everything right, but it would have been better, if she had suggested a reason why they need to help the refugees thrive. They need to be educated, they need to be well-treated, and we understand that becuase we all are human beings in the world we live in. But it would have been more specific, if she had made a point on why the refugees can stop the armed gangs and why they can make a better world for their next generation. The reason maybe is that there would be nobody who knows better about what it is like to deal with the severe hardship: homes destroyed, family died, no food, no education, etc than people who take all these things that they couldn't get for granted. I respect what she told us on the TED stage.

People should focus to stop the action (wars) that caused the people become refugees. Otherwise, there will be more and more refugees that we can't save faster enough than the war kills. It is like stray dog issue. People (dog owners) are the ones should be educated. Not ask the animal saving group or people to save more dogs/cats/horses. So, those politicians and people who make weapons to make money are the ones who should pay for.

+Alice Rabbit To continue this thread of conversation with you could be likened to speaking sense to a madman/woman. It saddens me that your pig headed mindset is incapable of hearing even the slightest voice of reason I must choose the most efficient response for myself and my time when dealing with lost causes such as yourself, and let sleeping dogs lay. May you find a kinder viewpoint in the near future. I'd hate to think I had the chance to speak wisdom to someone only to leave no mark on their moral compass. Good luck in life. I'm sorry your view is so corrupt and I hope your influence is naught for humanities future. Peace out yo!

No, we have a lot of poor people in Europe. Maybe not in our own country but in neighboring countries. These are the people we should help first. By helping our neighbors we invest in a common future. People from other continents can not be our priority. Lebanon only provided these people with a place to live. Food, water and tents are provided by the UNHCR. They do not provide education, health care and a house as we are expected to, so the comparison is bogus.

If the world wants to see and end to what is selectively defined as terrorism, ALL types of terrorism should first be stopped. Including the professional terrorism by the elite. redant I'm afraid your question is too general for me to know exactly what you mean. if it helps, all I'm saying is - let them come, but Brits have been paying 30% tax + National Insurance into a system which keeps us all fairly secure but pretty poor. We( well - 99%) can't thrive in our own country. Can we include every refugee and migrant worker in this system? it's not that it's unfair for Brits to be forced by the Euro govt. to feed the whole world. - just that it is impossibly expensive and will destroy our British social system. This is the price of exchanging British sovereignty for a European dream. - Not that I'm keen on any flags. Flags cause wars. That's just how I "work that one out" - as you asked. I'm sure, as your tone seems to suggests, you can find something to disagree with.

Countries spending huge sums of money to send weapons into the conflict like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Emirates, UK, US & Russia should be 100% paying to resettle, feed and educate the refugees in my view. Everyone this should not need to be said; do you think extremists do what they do because they're religious? No, they do it because there is a charismatic, twisted guy in charge. Being religious is just a good way to look like you should be doing what you're doing. Was Hitler a bad guy because he was Christian, or because he was crazy? Think of it this way; anyone who truly follows their religious beliefs is the nicest and most good person ever.

Refugees come from places in the world where there is still a high fertility rate. Since WWII, the earth's human population has more than doubled. If the rest of the world had been doing what Australians have been doing for 40 years - keeping their reproduction down to fewer than two children per woman, there would be no world refugee crisis. Syria was allowing its population to grow, and then there was a drought. Moving people into OECD countries does absolutely nothing to alleviate the world refugee crisis. As fast as one leaves for Europe or Australia, he is quickly replaced by two more babies - future refugees. The only thing that can reduce displacement is population reduction. The OECD countries have already done their share in the task of reducing the number of babies per woman. It is racial discrimination to fail to demand that the rest of the world do the same.

I just watched Melissa Fleming, UN spokesperson, saying during a WEF-hosted interview that, having "partnered with Google", the UN is pleased to announce that if you "Google Climate Change you will now get all kinds of UN resources". She goes on: "We were shocked to see that when we were Googling Climate Change we were getting all kinds of distorted information." Which sounds to me like: "We were shocked that anyone was allowed to challenge our monopoly on information." Finally she informs the interviewer that "We own the science and we think that the world should know it." We own the science. What next? Welcome to the new, post-free speech world order.

This world is not just your world, and you should not be the decision maker in their lives. In all aspects you have the same worth as any one of them, you are only one and you should realise that because in any second that could be you.

This reminds me a lot of that scene from Man of Steel. Superman: "What was I supposed to do? Just let them die?" His dad: " ... I dunno, maybe?" Yeah, when it comes to people who are at risk of being killed in their own country, I'm gonna have to side with Superman here.

You probably will never be the refugees but hope you will put yourself in their shoes. No one wants to leave their country and wants be treated as secondary citizens. Those people just need a safe place to live and to raise their children.

The world's population has more than doubled since the second world war. If the rest of the world had been doing what Australians have been doing for the last 40 years, keeping their fertility down to fewer than two children per woman, there would be no world refugee crisis and far less reason for conflict. What do people do when all the agricultural land is already in use and there are more people than there are ways to make a living? They can live in poverty, leave, or force others to leave. This last is called "persecution".

The most evil men in the world are those who persist in starting more children, when they cannot provide safety to the children they already have.
