A point I think is well worth mentioning about the medic is that, since a unit cannot be healed by more than one medic at a time, they don't scale along with the damage output when the army grows. In a group of 20 marines, an equivalent enemy army can kill individual marines so quickly that the healing practically has no in-combat effect. However, in a group of 4-8 marines facing an equivalent enemy force, the dps of the enemy is much smaller but the healing rate a marine is healed by is still the same. Now the medic is strong in-combat. There are some replays with truly hellish examples of this in TvZ, where a medium-sized MM drop gets defended and whittled down to about 3-4 marines, but the healing rate is too fast for the last few marines to be killed off, and the zerg main force is occupied with the T main force so it can't come reinforce, and those few marines just shreds the rest of the base. TLDR: when the army size increases, so does the ratio of how many marines per medic is optimal.

Just one note about the firebat, it will always do full damage to shields, including those of buildings. Maybe getting a couple firebats with stim-pack to kill off a photon cannons shields might be a neat addition to those marine-medic cheese builds. PS: Yes, I am looking for any excuse to build firebats in my matches :p

Wow the Starcraft unit AI is better than I thought, at 12:55 a medic starts healing a marine, but since she is closer to the last marine to be healed and the other medic is just further away, she stops healing and go to the last marine while the heal gets passed from a medic to another. Amazing

Terran is a race of specialist units. It's hilarious that in the mirror, all of a sudden most of the units that don't see any other play are now viable to counter the random shit the opponent might do

I feel like I should have been taking notes, so here goes for cliff notes: TvZ: DPS all the things! Mass Marines & Medics (M&Ms), with Science Vessels for AoE, and some Siege Tanks to beef up the DPS. TvP: Volley things with grenades and cannon fire. Loads of mines. Crawl siege towards their bases, poking them a bit. Factory units (mech) are ridiculously good! TvT: Do some fancy tricky control area stuff, using vulture mines and dropships with tanks. Use goliaths, which counter drops (way better than missile turrets, so it would seem?). Eventually smash their head in with Battlecruisers when you get bored.

I know a these things may come up later, but they would've been good to mention for new players: 1. Which units can attack air and which cannot. 2. How Spider mines actually work. 3. Vultures deal little damage to Dragoons, but they deal 100% of their damage to Protoss shields. This adds to their synergy with tanks as they can swoop in front and help soften incoming troops. 4. Irradiate only works on bio units.

I used nukes one time to win on a money map. Back in high school I had a friend who could only play on money maps, and he ringed his entire base with spore colonies and sunken colonies, and it was an elevated position, so I, droped a few nukes, and the nuke targeting kept going even after I lost the line of sight, that made a big hole in his defenses and then I brought dropships through. Because the dot was so small, he couldn't find the dot among all the creep and other Zerg goop. You did not mention that the Goliath ground attack has a slight AoE on it. I also think you underestimate the Valkyrie. They are pure air vs air, with more maneuverability than goliaths.

Hey Day[9], I have recently begun playing and also studying the incredible game that StarCraft is, and I am planning on watching your entire series of "Let's Learn StarCraft". I find it fun and entertaining, while being very informative with a lot of in depth knowledge. However, in this episode, when you go over the Goliath, you mention that you will discuss the specific use of the Goliath in TvT, and that you will come back to that later. You never come back to it during this episode ^^ - is that because you forgot about it, or because you mention this in a later episode? Lotta love and appreciation from Mattis "BalRock" Bentsen, Denmark

Great series. However I think it's important to note that the Wraith is a fantastic counter to Zerg's Guardians especially if the Terran hasn't had the gas or timing to get a decent amount SV's with upgrades. It's a bit niche but the Guardian is a nightmare for Terran if not responded to correctly.

Slayers_BoxeR used Flare against overlords to let his ghosts nuke an entire zerg army. So there are people who can use it properly. He also locked down a whole siege line and abused nukes against protoss. He'd nuke a base and drop an EMP right before the nuke lands and just destroy a nexus.

That is normal. Brood war is a hard, hard game, the video game with the highest skill ceiling I've ever encountered. I've been playing blizzard rts games for many years, and I recently finished a multiplayer game of starcraft 2 with a loss, about 100 supply in units, and 6000 minerals in the bank. Brood war is even harder than SC2. So don't worry, as Day9 keeps saying, managing the crisis is the game. Even pros mess up. Keep it up, and good luck! :)

I played over 10000 games as zerg. I encountered wraiths maybe a dozen times. Half the games I play I am rushing so the terran has a few wraiths while zerglings are smashing his base. The other half the wraiths are super awkward, I have hydra or muta and I am stalling for a defiler to plague them or overlord speed or some air to air purple goo... wraiths suck against zerg once some key units come into play so it does contain zerg... but then I come in like a wrecking ball. Just get marines, they do better. The battlecruiser is pretty good against zerg assuming ultralisks and zerglings haven't ruined the party yet.

If you are new to TvZ. Always build marines. ABM. Just don't stop making marines unless it is to make a firebat or a medic. 1 medic per 4-8 marines is fine. Put tanks on highground above a choke or zerglings will make you sad. But if you are heavy on the tank side... If overlords are moving fast... a drop is coming so you need marines for that, so make marines. Vultures are kind of nice for scouting laying annoying mines that kill a random zergling on patrol, can wreck a zerg army here n there... but it can't kill mutalisks so you need marines. Basically it all comes back to the marine against zerg. Against Terran NBM. Never build marines. EXCEPTION: 4 marines for 1 bunker. Watch the entire video to find out why. EXCEPTION. Cheese strategy. Build barracks near your opponent's base and build marines non stop, because if this rush doesn't work you will lose. Against Prooss. NBM. exception 4 rines for 1 bunker or 1-2 marines for scouting. or a random drop in a mineral line. BUT THAT IS IT.

@ZerglingWasteland

Firebats see use when you're facing a lot of Zerglings, which can often be the case in low-econ team games (Zerg in team games is often a team's playmaker/initiative holder, and he achieves that by just massing Zerglings for a while) or against Zerg cheese. Actually, often in team games you will run M&M, and if it's something like TZ vs ZP, it's not completely unimaginable to think you might want a Firebat against some Zealots or whatever. Queens have had a resurgence recently and they're used in very long Zerg matches where the entire map is mined out and you can use them to Broodling expensive units. Ghosts... yeah, they're good when you're SlayerS_BoxeR in 2003. Generally though I figure that most of the BW community doesn't really want tweaks anymore; the tradition is the game's balance between races is near-perfect and the map pool helps maintain it. Fix a few units in 2017 and you might go into a snowbally mindset where you're suddenly nerfing potentially "oppressive" (read: harder to deal with for one of the players) strats like the Terran 2/1 mech push, Zerg hydra break or Carriers. SC2 constantly patches for balance, and it seems like they're still figuring out the actual identity of their game, given that they decided to completely get rid of the Mothership. Personally I think those units still have their place, even if that place isn't in competitive, because Firebat hero unit is always the superhero in UMS. Gimli in LotR Hero Siege will fuck your shit up.

I'm surprised you don't purge the enemy at the start and then just go with the "staying alive" cheat so you can play after the mission end. :) Thanks for these videos too Day9, its great to get back into Starcraft properly again :)

Am I the only one who thinks that the Valkyrie is better than a Corsair or Devourer? Why is it seldom used?I think valkyries' splash damage is really god against packs of mutalisks and carriers with interceptors

Yeah, I wish you could play single player Remastered while offline. I think they kind of screwed that up.

Day[9] just DOES NOT understand how we bronze league heroes play on Big Game Hunters. Tanks and vultures are worthless against 16 carriers and an arbiter

As a beginner playing SC2, how much of this is actually applicable? Or are the StarCrafts completely different games.

Why make the entire screen so small just to have the giant border and cam? Why not just put the face cam at the bottom left metal texture or something.

Its not actually because he just wanted to bother us... the game is old... very old... that means it runs on smallers resolutions, and that also means that if you run the game in major resolutions that those the game was meant and coded it to be... itll be awfull to see

Max Moyano I know how old the game is. ive played it since release. But this is the remastered version. Its 1920x1080. Might even be 4K.

I personally like the way Day9 has this situated aesthetically, but you're right. SC2 remastered has a much higher resolution.

Honestly this is much better for this style of video. It's aesthetically pleasing to have the disconnect to the game and also doesn't cover any element of the game, not even the portrait or some other useless element.

felix_xb I disagree. I don't think it's aesthetically pleasing to have a disconnect to the game. In fact, I think it's very distracting and makes it hard to watch. Also, there are two very large metal texture squares at the bottom that would easily fit the webcam without covering any information whatsoever. I admit, this is more of a preference thing than something that I can make a logical argument for. We may just have to agree to disagree.
