The Quest for a Successor to Bunjie continues. In this episode we look at Mission Crossbows; specifically the Mission Sub-1 XR! No decisions yet, but this one is definitely attractive.

This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it and I aim to help you love it, too!
Bunjie is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels--you name it!--with the "stock" 20" Easton Firebolt arrows, Bunjie experimented with heavy arrows during 2020 but has since decided to hunt with 20" ProFlight arrows from Easton, for a total arrow weight of just under 400 grains when tipped with a 100 grain Rage Crossbow Hypodermic Broadhead. This keeps old Bunjie around 300fps.
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. She also shoots ProFlights (16.5" variety) with a 150 grain Rage Trypan Crossbow Broadhead, for a total arrow weight around 415 grains.
I am in the process of upgrading Bunjie in favor a more modern crossbow. I am looking to continue to perfect my preferred hunting strategies with a new crossbow by my side. That Quest for Bunjie's Successor should be complete by summer of 2021.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester .30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
All Hail Bunjie!

One time I used 4 arrows over the course of one hunt. I seem to remember using three once or twice as well but that was in a state where I could shoot more than one deer, without having to recover the first/second. I dont like a quiver on the bow (due to weight) and I sure wouldn't want more arrows in a quiver, if I was keeping it on the bow. I remember Rich shooting 3 arrows one time (spine shot) and it didnt do him any good, because there was an error that was equipment or user related. A 4th arrow wouldn't have changed that outcome IMO. One shot, One kill. Keep them close, prepare the shot and you wont need but 1 arrow in PA. Maryland? .... so far, 2 arrows would have sufficed. ;)

@@dualthreatoutdoors I cannot remember the weight but I do remember weighing my quiver back in the 90's (IBO days) and it was not light and it was effecting my balance, with an open hand/high wrist grip. Took it off back then and have used a hip quiver ever since. Hip quivers are not all sunshine & butterflies either but the bow is lighter and less off center. All that said... I am basing my opinion on my experience, which was primarily formed in a competitive atmosphere. Certainly, I am not saying this is how it has to be across the board. If you are compensating balance/weight without effort then it is a moot point for those individuals who do keep a quiver on the bow.

This is the crossbow you should buy. The rope cocking fits your style and you can always buy the crank if you want. Hawke optics are excellent. I have the XB1 on my center point 370. Very easy to get sighted in and hold accuracy year after year. I've harvested many deer with this setup.

I just traded my Ravin R10 for the mission Sub1. The Ravin is a supper bow but has become a maintenance nightmare, string life is only 50-100 shots on average. Never really cared for the quiver and the way it attached but as with most there is a trade off. The safety just sucks, too small for gloved hands. The Sub1 only draw back as compared to the Ravin is it’s a little wider and heavier. The mission is much more durable and has a much better warranty, lifetime vs. only 5 years for the Ravin. Happy I made the switch back to Mission.

@@Deathbybunjie I just finished my sight in and can say I’m very impressed with the complete package and no complaints. I may however invest in the removable cocking device because I think it will be easier in the tree stand vs. the rope cocker. I’ve owned a sub1 XR for two years and killed two deer with it Rich. Extremely flat shooting complete platform (I did add the foot stir up which I highly recommend) and great fit and finish. Decocking works as advertised and no bow press needed. I’ve had excellent string and cable wear. You will not be dissatisfied with this in the deer woods. I read the 2019 Mission Owners manual. One thing to note is that Mission recommends using aluminum nocks. The manual also states that any damage to the bow caused by using plastic nocks will void the warranty. Kind of strange since right on the Mission website are plastic lighted nocks for use with their bows. Speaking of lighted nocks, they got terrible reviews. This isn't isolated to Mission, however. Ravin and TenPoint are equally as bad. I can personally attest to the hair pulling frustration caused by using lighted alpha nocks (TenPoint's proprietary nocks).
@leveraction767
@leveraction767 3 жыл бұрын
Dont need lighted nocks for filming. Back in the day, people dipped their shafts white and they showed up just fine, even on that grainy old 8mm film. Dont need lighted nocks to find a white arrow either.
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 3 жыл бұрын
Jennifer: I read some of those, too! Not sure it's folks not understanding how to use lighted nocks or if the manufacturer's nocks are different bit that does concern me a bit. I did not read manual, wow, odd, since they happily sell arrows with lighted nocks on their site that APPEAR to be plastic! Are there lighted nocks available that are framed in aluminum I wonder?

Lever Action: scourge thing about filming, at 400 fps I bet arrow is not on the screen as long a at 300 fps. I will be interested to see difference. I do have white pro flights I can cut down, we'll see. But man I like my lighted nocks... that's almost in the"do the same thing only better"category for me!
@leveraction767
@leveraction767 3 жыл бұрын
@@Deathbybunjie I have not gone to the site to read BUT... I am assuming that (like others) what is meant, is that using anything other than their nocks will void warranty. I would imagine that one (aluminum) was being spoken directly to and that in speaking directly to this one nock, they failed to mention the other option. Certainly they cannot refuse warranty on a nock that they also recommend for the same arrow/bow. Proof reading is something the factories dont seem to do nearly as well as they build bows. ;)

@@Deathbybunjie I hear you. I run lighted nocks BUT.... You and I and others (tons of people) have had them not light and/or blow out of the shaft on impact (happens with high energy bows) and then what? I like the fact that a white shaft isnt going to have these issues and if nothing else, the white shaft backs up the lighted nock, when that nock fails.

I have to say the Sub 1 is by far my favorite. From the draw to the launch, the smoothness of this bow is incredible. The 80% let off makes cocking very easy and the trigger is as nice as any rifle I own. Its a well balanced bow that is more accurate than my other 2. I’m looking forward to watching you try it for yourself, it impressed me and I’ll bet you like it as much. I was having the strings/cables replaced on my compound bow this week. This particular archery shop carries Ravin, Ten Point, Mission, & Excalibur. I spent some time when the owner while his top tech guy was setting up my bow. I went in being most interested in Ten Point & Excalibur, but I left being most impressed with Mission crossbows. Even though they were well stocked with Ravin & Ten Point crossbows, you could tell they had a huge well earned bias for Mission. If they were to shoot a crossbow, it would be a Mission. This is coming from two guys that run a very busy archery shop. I cocked & shot a crossbow for the very first time, & it was the Mission. Very easy to rope cock/decock. Very solid crossbow with a warranty second to none. I believe Mission values accuracy over speed. If I was buying a $1,500-2,000 crossbow, Mission would be on my list. I also rope cocked/shot the Excalibur Mag 340. Considering it's about $1,000-1,200 (depending on model you are comparing) cheaper than the Mission, the Mag 340 was a very solid package. For what's it's worth, the crossbows they repair the most are ones (Barnett) they don't sell.

I have hunted with the Sub-1 for two seasons. They are an excellent crossbow. The safety is easily used while aiming. Cocking and decocking is super smooth, in fact I personally think it’s way more convenient than a cocking aid. Mission XR is a good quality bow. Spec wise though, the "Up To" rating of 410 fps is with a 340gr arrow. I've seen chrono readings of 382-386 fps with 400gr arrow. If your OK with that, then this bow offers a lot of other nice features you may find more suitable for your style of hunting/ shooting. You have a pleasant surprise coming your way when you upgrade past 400fps... The front side shoulder blade will break if you hit it. There is also a good chance you will break the back side one if you hit it after going through the deer. The down side is that the arrows have so much momentum that it can be hard to find them when hunting out of a blind. When I killed my first bear with my R29 I found the arrow about 50 yards away. You might need to rethink some of your blinds so you have a backdrop the arrows can go into.

Great video! I've narrowed my next Xbow down to the Sub-1 or the Excal micro 360TD. I'm currently running the 308 short and love it but wouldn't mind some extra speed.

Hey Rich I went back and looked at the specs. It shows this crossbow axle to axle cocked is 9.1" and 12.5" axle to axle unlocked. If you roughly add about 1.5"x2=3" to cover from the axle to outside cam should give you a rough overall width of the crossbow. I learned this when I was shooting a compound and just crossed it over to my new crossbow era. I have seen where you have asked about the overall width in several videos and thought it might help you in your search. Good luck, Tony Kitchen

Lot of the top podium places go to folks using a sub 1 definitely says something about it’s accuracy. They shoot a lot of bolts so the fact it’s easy to cock by hand probably helps to. Whether it’s the best for hunting that’s a different question, obviously accuracy is important and there definitely built tough but I guess noise levels and manoeuvrability I don’t know how it compares. I like Excalibur because they’re easy maintenance but recurves aren’t known for been quiet! Think with the high end companies there all good, so it’s just a matter of taste. That’s my 10cents anyway

One thing to not, Mission doesn't do their speed rating with their factory weight 400gr arrows though. It's actually hidden but I'm trying to remember from cbn forum that it is either 325gr or 375gr that the Sub-1 XR shoots 410 fps. And I'm pretty sure it's 325gr that get it to 410 fps. It’s not as bad as the draw weight sounds, but the new Assassin 400 TD is a different story! You would have to be the hulk to cock that beast with a rope, and that’s the very reason I don’t have one!! I’m sure whatever you decide to go with will be an awesome crossbow. I do believe the Bulldog 400 was the last of the rope cocking Mohicans as far as Excalibur goes. Good luck brother!!

I get the "hard hitting" because K.E. (not a great measurement but used as one) is and has been a huge draw. In fact... Many people (like me) dont believe most bows have anywhere near the energy that I want, out of the box. Then there is Rich who wants pass throughs and is seeking "hard hitting". Now here is the thing that Mission is addressing with two words. Many people have attempted increasing energy by adding speed or adding weight to the arrow. Both of these additions generally subtract from accuracy (in different ways) although not always. That (not always) said... The proof is in the pudding and advancing speed/arrow weight is generally taking away from accuracy and about every manufacturer and professional shooter can/do speak to this fact. So... Mission is saying (IMO) we have it both. They deliver a good amount of energy with unchallenged accuracy. They are just being concise in stating an obvious, once the evidence is examined. Yes? I say yes. LOL
