Let's Overheat The Nintendo Switch!

A lot has been said about the heat produced by the Nintendo Switch with some claiming temperature change when the Switch is in certain positions. In this video I test temperatures using a temperature probe to record how hot the chip gets in certain scenarios going as far as to purposely overheat the system to find the roof temperature.

Spawn Wave Does heat not escape out the top vent more than the back anyway?
@mikukumiku
@mikukumiku 7 жыл бұрын
He's referring to the intake ports, which is where cool air enters the system. Like you said, the large grill at the top of the console is the exhaust port where the hot air escapes. He's basically debunking people's assumptions that blocking the intake vents by lying the console down will make the console overheat.
@treymiller5736
@treymiller5736 7 жыл бұрын
CF YT back ports are intake it's hard for air to leave if hard to pull air in. The switch is underclocked the clock could be increased by 50% to be set to the normal clock speed but seems at suck clock rate Nintendo got worried about over heating

@@kowhaifan1249 That is incorrect. The Lite, 2019 Model and OLED use a newer version of the chip, that is produced on a smaller nanometre process, resulting in a more energy efficient chip. This is why the Lite, 2019 model and OLED have longer battery times than the OG 2017 model.

60c is actually pretty cool for any processor. My overclocked 7700k which is a high end desktop processor hits around 85c during stress tests. 100c is kinda the too hot temp for a processor when it will either thermal throttle or shut down but in a handheld device you want it to be bearable to hold... Long story short you really dont need to worry about the switch overheating to the point of damage. Yeah it may shut down but it will never damage itself unless you remove the cooler for some reason then yeah running at any more than 20 seconds or so it will most likely kill itself.
@CotyRiddle
@CotyRiddle Жыл бұрын
that 7700k is a different beast with a different archetecture and smaller lithography. the tegra can safely operate up to 75 degrees. intels modern processors are rated up to 100 degrees and with useually throttle at 90 to 95. also the tegra is direct die coupled to the heatsink there is no integrated heat spreader if you dont count the stupid emi shield as one.

I heard that this was just an EMI shield but I also heard it acts as a heatsink. If you see this please reply quickly because I need to know soon
@CotyRiddle

it should by design help dissipate heat over time. as for it's effectiveness it's meh. probably would run cooler without that extra layer in there. I have removed *emi shields* before with no ill effects other than maybe nearby audio equioment picking up extra noise but if that is a problem then the audio equipment is not shielded very good it's self.

A general rule of thumb if you want to be extra safe is try not to play over 2 hours preferably 1 hour and make sure your room is well ventilated and ya should be ok for gaming sessions. Probably can last a lot longer but i don't trust playing the switch on the dock for very long periods even though i took extra precautions to help prevent overheating.

Correction, it is a hypothesis until it's tested. After that, if results confirm the hypothesis it becomes a theory, if results contradict the hypothesis then it becomes debunked

Would have been nice had you flipped the switch over to see the difference between it lying on its back and it lying on its front. Most people (I assume) have screen protectors, so it would be worth knowing if the dongle dock works better when the switch is on its belly!

My MacBook Pro works just fine on the bed. Perhaps because it was designed appropriately for that case (no vents directly on bottom, but recessed up a quarter inch). Design win.

it might not overheat on its back but it will run hotter at the very least which shortens the life of the cooling system (especially fan lifespan), thermal paste and potentially other hardware components. Keeping the vents clear is good practice if you want electronics in general to last. I also would of found this test more useful if you raised your ambient as 21c isnt warm at all. We want it to survive hot summers, everyone knows PCs and consoles suffer heat issues in warmer seasons more often.

I put my Nintendo switch on my couch while running a pretty CPU demanding game and accidents covered up the top vents. The fans got pretty loud when i realised that i covered up the vents.

It's more about Switch lifespan. All electronic components have threshold operating temperatures. It is possible that you shorten its lifespan from prolonged exposure, specially capacitor.
@DextNRN

You are right. That is also not taking into account that not every Switch can take 67c as there max temp before shouting down and some well take less heat and some can take more heat.

That's true, but the standard temperature ratings for components in consumer electronics is -40 to +85 C at minimum--and that's for their rated lifespan. Not to mention, most of the capacitors in the Switch are a couple inches away from the SoC and will be at least 5-10 C cooler than it.

pretty sure on most PC, most of the modern motherboards also come with a max temp at which it turns off (and refuse to reboot until the temperature is allright)

For the scans dock that's being used the cord is supposed to bend so that the system sits on top, this does not block the vent holes! Why does no one know of this??

nvidia tegra x1 doesnt even start throttling until zone1 reaches 89°C OR zone2 reaches 90.5°C. basically this thing is not going to overheat itself during normal use and even when hitting temperatures to cause it to turn off it is below the temperatures required to do damage to the hardware.

uh.. That's what I said. The fan blows air out of the vent on the top of the switch. The speakers are on the back. The guy in this video was pointing to the speakers. That's not where the fan is.

Think about it for a second. If the fan is where he said they are, the vents would be covered when it is docked decreasing the efficiency of it.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 managed to scare me the other day. I played on my TV for about an hour and pulled it out of the dock and this was the first time I ever heard the switch fan panicking to cool the system. I was afraid that XC2 might be too much for the system at certain points. I think this because the game already has frame drops during serveral battles and while walking around map with many entities. If u wanna try for a thermal throttle, give XC2 a go. Yes thia game is long and i didnt notice heat problems until i made it to Gormott Province
