The game H.E.R.O. by Activision is considered one of the best games for the Atari 2600 and it just happens to be one of my favorite games of all time! The game was pretty advanced for the time and it is still a challenging and fun game to play today. I do my best to try and get through all 20 original levels in this video. Can I make it?

I'd like to do more Let's Play / Couch Co-Op videos with my special guests. What games would you like to see us play... and with who?
@MrConshunce

if possible, some of the people you've featured in your videos like Reggie, Kinsey and Kelsey could play some games on the systems they did buying guides for. I'm partial to beat-em-ups and run and guns so if you could do Guardian Heroes, Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage 2, Contra: Hard Corps, Golden Axe...stuff like that? I'd be fine.

I had this game as a kid on the Atari 5200 (yes...that one) I loved it so much that I made a helicopter pack for my GI Joes by taking apart another toy and using the motor from that and a painted popsicle stick for the helicopter blades. It didn't fly, but it was awesome for the imagination!

Thoroughly enjoyed this video MJR, which is exactly the kind of entertaining retro content I'm looking for on YT. Appreciate your enthusiasm and first-hand experience of playing the game and its controls & levels. H.E.R.O might be my #3 fave Atari 2600 game, behind River Raid and Enduro which are infinitely replayable to me!

This is a really nice playthrough, specially because of the super easy going narration, I could even say it's the best gameplay I've watched. This is coming from a person that was born without patience haha. You should do more playthroughs for different systems, maybe create polls?

OMG! Finally! I mean, sure H.E.R.O. is cool, but what I am really happy for is to hear your passion come through. I think all your guests are great and really add to your show, but my favourite episodes are when you alone are sharing your passion with us. Your enthusiasm feels just a little diluted when sharing screen space with others. More solo stuff dude!

I always remember how much I loved this game.I honestly don't remember if I completed it though.I am sure I must have,as I completed all the other Atari games I had.My other 2600 favourites were Popeye,Enduro,river raid and decathlon.It was my first console,and I have to totally agree with you about the rubbish so called arcade game ports,like asteroid and pacman.They were far too easy,and nothing like their arcade versions.I recently got my Atari out and had a night of two player combat.And I can honestly say that,that game still holds up today.We played for hours on end.I have never lost my enthusiasm for games,and I will never forget where it all started.Thanks for sharing this.Real nostalgia.

These are really some awesome videos you've got, MetalJesus. You've been one of my favorite youtubers for a couple years now. I'm a 20-year-old girl who grew up only knowing about games from my time and I've never had an interest in retro gaming before discovering your channel. Nice! I was getting pretty invested watching you play, even though I have no familiarity with this game and only the vaguest of early childhood memories of Atari. This is SOO special to watch and hear upon for me !.I´m also born in ´71,and bought the "H.E.R.O." cartridge when it was new in ´84.Everything that you´re mentioning here about "H.E.R.O." and "Atari 2600",i could have said the same from my own experiences/thoughts as well,except from three things: 1, My 2600 was a 4 button console (you obviously call it "Darth Vader" in America i heard).2, I ALSO had "Played H.E.R.O. and returned to it".-But,sad to say it,not "ALL of my life" (not since i unplugged my 2600 in about 1991 and put it in a box somewhere).Still,i have had it "in my backbone" for all of my life,even as a grown up person. 3, Believe it or not,but I HAVE ACTUALLY FINISHED IT !.And at least twice that i am sure of (1986 and ´87 respectevely).It´s too hard to remember for giving any "tips" etc. (i did´nt even could recall that "evil tentacle" thing in your video !).But one thing though: I was also a guitar guy in my youth,and you know what happens if you have´nt touched it for a week,and then comes back to it.-When you´re "warming up",you´re noticing; "What the heck is it that does´t work here ?".You would need 2-3 hours of real practice to "catch up" with your actual/current skill level in that case,right ?!.O.k.,so now,, "finishing level 20" in H.E.R.O. is no difference from this example.-It´s rather even MORE stringent !.Don´t even CONSIDER to play it less than 1 hour for every 24 hour´s period ! (the "Play select" switch can be used so that you don´t have to start from "Level 1" everyday,but choose from a preconfigured range of higher leveled numbers instead.But since it takes times to earn all of those lives and dynamite sticks that will be required "for the final",there´s still "a calculation" that has to be done there).Anyway,your brain,your hand and the joystick must be in perfect sync to make this project possible.And without daily training and commitment...AT THE BEST,..you can fix "Level 19",but i doubt it.. I remember a kind of "strategy rule" that i used to have in the days,but that probably was specific for myself only (??),and it was like: "In order to finish both ""Level 19 and 20"",you need no less than THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF B O T H THE LIVES AND THE DYNAMITE STICKS (was it 6 or 8 of ém respectevely ?.But anyway,) as soon as you start up ""Level 19"" !." "OCD" ?.No,actually not.-It´s was only because of THE EXTREME DIFFICULTY DEMANDS FROM THESE LEVELS !.With any lower amounts,in "the final fights",you just won´t make it down there !. "Finish ""Level 20"", = Finish the game". O.k. But there was´nt any rewarding features for doing that at all,as i remember it !.It just started over from "Level 1",and that´s about it !."Console generation 2" was surely primitive,even though i feel warm emotions for it today (i really wish that i would have had a "Colecovision" though,but you can´t have it all right ?!). Thanks for the tip with the "Master system"/Jet pack version of "H.E.R.O." !.I´m gonna find myself some emulator to try it out now !. /Mike from Sweden

God, I loved HERO back on the Commodore 64. Easily one of my favorite games on that platform, as well as Great Giana Sisters. I even worked on my own version of HERO for PC using GameMaker. Wow, never knew this was a hugely popular game. I remember as a kid, in 1992 my dad got me an Atari (ya, I know right?) and it came with a bunch of games; and H.E.R.O was one of them. I think it was my most played; because the cover on the cart looked cool, and it wasn't as boring as some of the other games in my collection. It used to make me mad at how hard it was; so this playthrough really shows how good you are at it. I still have this game somewhere in a box with my Atari. Good times indeed!

It's a definite sign of the times (and our age) that younger gamers who weren't around gaming in the 80s, won't ever understand or appreciate how much of a great groundbreaking game this was. It wasn't just your basic pong or pacman, you had to have a strategy to playing, something taken for granted today. Enjoyed this Jason, thanks!

This video brought back some memories. I remember playing Hero after school in my old trusty ATARI 2600 (in Brazil they were at first produced by a company called Polyvox), using a multicart I had borrowed from my cousin. That was in the late 1980s, before I got my first PC (an MSX). Too bad my father kind of forced me to get rid of my ATARI, I still regret it to this day!

While EUA were in the videogame crash, Brazil was just opening up to imports. This made Atari to reaxh the country only in 1982, so while most americans are not familiarized with late Atari releases such as HERO, here they were a blasting success. My brother beat the game a few times, you just select a different mode and play the more advanced levels from start, to memorize until you get really good.

My all time favourite Atari game 😆 Me and my older brother played this a LOT in the 80's, he was better than me and reached level 20 first, but I eventually did too. Then when I was a teen in the 90s I got so good that I finally made the 1.000.000 score while playing the PRO levels , it was really awesome! Good memories 👍😉

It's weird cause in the 2000's I was barely 5 and playing Crash Bandicoot, Super Mario 64, Spyro and in school we'd have Pajama Sam; but I remeber playing "Adventure" from an Atari plug and play that used 4 double AA batteries and I loved that game, it would scar the living shit out of me that giant duck/dragon that would chase you. I mean 3D games was a thing already but that game felt like Zelda Ocarina of Time.
