Today's Fun Pokémon Inspiration Fact. Chinchou. Chinchou is based on Angler Fish. While the most obvious inspiration is the deep sea angler fish, thanks to the light based lures, Chinchou does share some features with other species. Chinchou is able to walk on its pectoral fins like several species of angler fish, which are sometimes known as frog fish due to this and their frog-like mouths. Chinchou are similar in size when male or female, suggesting they are more similar to frog fish anglers than deep sea anglers. A common misconception about deep sea angler fish is that the lure is somehow hypnotic or the prey fish is curious about unfamiliar stimuli. It actually works because many deep sea shrimp and similarly small organisms glow, and they are prey for the fish that deep sea angler fish prey on. So the lure works by tricking prey into thinking there's potential food, when it's a trap. Other angler fish have similar lures, usually shaped like a worm or small fish, to attract prey. And yes, the whole thing about male deep sea angler fish being tiny and attaching to the female is true and makes a lot of sense. Deep sea is big and dark, so it's hard to find a mate. Best to stick with them when you can. A single female deep sea angler fish can have multiple males attached at a time.
