No timer in 2nd edition, a very controversial decision as I recall. The timer adds such an element of pressure for the Space Marine player.

The game that properly got me into the 40K universe and spawned countless house-rules and home-brews. Why is it not back on the shelves? Great bat-rep!

Space Hulk is one of those rare games where everything comes together beautifully to generate a great game experience. Time management and razor thin balance makes every decision count. I wasn't terribly fond of 2nd edition, but it's still Space Hulk and a blast to play.

I loved this game when I was a kid.

GW should keep a version of this game in print! I want to own a copy.

I love how they used the sames Genestealers for Space hulk 1st and 2nd edition and Space Crusade. They must have just been perfect.

Great to see the much maligned, and often ignored, 2nd Edition. Would definitely love to see some more. There is an odd thing with the heavy flamer where the Rulebook says it costs 4 points to reload a flamer, and it says on p24 "the Missions book will often state that a Space Marine with a heavy flamer carries a reload." The trouble is that the Mission Book doesn't specify any reloads, apart from mission 1:6 where it says no reloads (in the Space Marines section top right). The Rulebook also says at the bottom of the inside of the back cover page "however you only receive one reload per game for each Space Marine armed with a flamer." White Dwarf 200 p105 had a Q&A with this question, and the answer from GW was "This is a mistake. What the rulebook should say is that you ALWAYS receive one reload for a heavy flamer, unless the Mission instructions state otherwise." I added the capitals, the original was in italics. It also clarifies the rule about moving and firing with a heavy flamer by saying "The rule just means that he cannot use a single action point to move and fire. He can, however, still move during the same turn that he fires by using further action points." As others have pointed out, you can't move blips into line of sight of a Marine. You have to stop before they can be seen, or convert them first, then move the genestealers.

yes ash!!! I love space hulk so much. I got a 4th edition new copy and its actually what got me into 40k and from there mini-wargaming as a whole! I’m actually painting my genestealers right now because I did the terminators first a while back. I know I won't be alone in watching a full 18 video playlist of space hulk campaigns :)

The jam die gives you more diversity in outcomes, even if the averages are the same. It makes it possible to have a single hit that is also a jam, which softens the blow of jamming somewhat (previously, 5/6 jams were also whiffs, which compounds the sadness). Also, you can now have a double-hit result that isn't a jam. Rolling boxcars should feel great. For that reason, it's good to have the jam as a separate result.

Hi Ash. I bought a 2nd Edition Space Hulk set last year after watching your videos of 1st edition SH + a massive dose of nostalgia! One thing I’ve struggled with is I thought that the heavy flamer could fire or move but not move and fire which really limits it. Guess I’ve been doing that wrong. Will give this a go and look forward to BBQing some Genestealers with my Son soon. This version has a special place in my heart because it was the one out when I first visited a GW store. I personally love the models in this version but the dice let it down a bit. This plus Warhammer Quest have to be a golden era of GW and miniature gaming. Thanks for all your vids and infectious enthusiasm.

Picked up a copy of 2nd edition from ebay, all sealed, the tokens still unpopped and the minatures on their sprues from 1996! I've finally gotten around to painting, looks great and brings back memories. I've been playing it solo, just playing the Genestealers at their best and not revealing the blips for an element of surprise, so far I haven't won any games out of the 6 times I've played recently 😂

I love Space Hulk content ;) 2nd Ed gets a bad rap. The special dice were goofy, but basically the same mechanic. And the flamer mechanic was interesting. I think there's an improved version of Space Hulk somewhere between 1st and 2nd. Couple things I noticed, it's been a while tho, so maybe I'm wrong: When a stealer opens a door that exposes them to a marine on overwatch, that should draw overwatch fire. Any time a stealer ends an action in LOS of an overwatch marine, they shoot. Also, it was hard to tell exactly cause the dice were washed out for me, but in second edition, if you roll two hits you can also kill an adjacent stealer you can see. It's called overkill. I think the Sargent could have done that when it shot those first stealers. Last, you might have been doing this just for ease, but blips can't move into LOS of a marine, and they can't convert if they move. So if you want to take a blip into LOS of a marine, you have to convert it first. Then the stealers move.

2nd edition is IMHO the least enjoyable ruleset amongst the Space Hulk editions, but I bought a used copy on eBay just for the minis and board pieces, components that I can used in conjunction with other editions. Space Hulk is a classic game that NEVER gets old. ; )

I've never seen this played --- a 4 and a 5 genestealer blip, ouch! My 1st ed Terminators are STILL my 40k army terminators and that will never change! :D (although I did add a metal termie with assault cannon to them)

I'd love a rerun of the 3rd ed box! GW would be printing money if they did a made to order for it.

Actually the genestealers can be build in four various poses, including both claws up and both claws down. Taking into account two different sets of legs, then you can have 8 different poses.

I also had 2nd edition Space Hulk and it was before I ever played 40K and AFTER playing Space Crusade (which was my introduction to this lore). I wonder if the game specific dice of Space Crusade were the inspiration for game specific dice in 2nd edition Space Hulk.

Real difference between this and 3rd edition is the 1 blip reinforcements instead of 2 in 3rd+ edition which makes it much harder.

Interesting! I've not seen 2nd edition played before - the flamer rules seem pretty decent but not convinced with the dice change. Anyhoo, it'll be good to see how it plays out in the next mission!

I've played this so many times I think I have the first 3 terminator turns memorized. edit: So I haven't played this 2nd ed version since the fancy 2009 edition came out. The (lack of) blip movement and los rules make 2nd ed way WAY HARDER

When GW launched new games back in the day, they would have a give away. And I actually won a copy of Space Hulk 1ed. Still have it. And very pretty newer version.

4:17 By the colour scheme and the symbol on their shoulder pads your terminators are from Flesh Tearers chapter which is successor chapter of the Blood Angels. I highly recommend you to check out some lore of the Flesh Tearers, they are pretty interesting chapter.

I still think shooting doors with sbolter is cheating, you have powerfist for a reason.

I’ve always thought 2nd edition has been unfairly maligned. I particularly liked the flamer rules as a continuous spurt of flame seems more realistic to me and the assault cannon rules in the White Dwarf supplement, I always felt a high tech 41st millennium machine gun should have more than ten shots!

Love the bodies of the those older genestealer models. Better than what they have now - but hurt slightly by the lack of pose variety and heads.

Yeah I still have a copy of this sealed. I remember how disappointed it was when everything was dumbed down from 1st edition, GW was on a big custom dice kick when this was made. Sometimes you can just "see" the effects of an idiotic executive mucking up a game.

You have missed a tons of rules.... ☺️ Social voluntary disclosure of blips, overwatch rules and so on ... But don't worry... It can happen!!

I do not understand GW. They like making money. They released multiple iterations of Warhammer Quest (Silver Tower, Blackstone Fortressm, Cursed City) but we cannot get a new release of Space Hulk which would surely do well and they have a hundred variations of Space Marines. Seems like a missed opportunity for a game that would surely sell out quickly.

Overwatch is a pretty boring rule... maybe is for balance, but is damn boring.
