This man complains he's tired of the "normal guy ends up being the villain after the twist" trope. Let me remind you how we all felt when we found out Lysanderoth was the bad guy. That hurt. We loved that character and it was an absolute betrayal.

I know right? He has always been the good guy who wants to cleanse the world from impurities. So his evil guy reveal just comes off as forced.
@jrg873 жыл бұрын
I'd like to offer a counterpoint: It works with Lysanderoth because he was a party member we grew attached to, instead of some forgettable secondary character. If it was a movie about the game, he could have ended up as just that one party member who gets one or two lines of foreshadowing before disappearing into the background in favor of focusing on Archibald to make his death more tragic. In a game, it works, since you get to enjoy playing them and get bits of personality from skits and pre, mid and post battle dialogue. Case in point, a lot of people actually want to know about Ophelia.

There is only one reason why Up is my favorite Pixar movie: it’s because Carl, the old man, reminds me a lot of my grandfather who basically raised me. The whole theme with flying things like blimps and airplanes also struck me hard in that film because my grandfather was a pilot, used to fly seaplanes and flew for the civil air patrol. When he grew older, especially around the time I was born, he used to fly model airplanes and he would take me out to the airstrip, and I would sit on a picnic table and eat lunch as I watched all the planes go by. TLDR: Up makes me cry every time I watch it as I’m thinking of my grandfather and immediately calling him up on the phone to catch up with him.

I watched recently and I still don’t know how to feel about it. I missed Bo Peep in the third one so I was glad to see her again and her new development, while stark still made sense and that was the highlight for me. The way they handled the other broken toys/forky and the subtextual themes about disability could have been better. Forky had his moments that got me to care but I’m still on the fence about him. Woody was enjoyable despite being more unlikable. The pacing felt off because the toys were taking their time watching the subplots resolve while their friends were stalling the humans. The toys had way too much direct influence. Like speaking without their voice box to change the directions of the gps. I really did have a good bit of fun with this one, but yeah it has a lot of problems.

i think brave is the reverse of most pixar films, in that instead of a "okay start, bad/blah middle, fantastic ending" it was a "fantastic start, bad/blah middle, okay ending". like it does give you a really interesting character introduction, the relationship between the mother and daughter, and then the bear stuff happens and the movie is just unsaveable. it kind of makes it worse as a film because its setting the bar high and failing to deliver, as opposed to an okay start and finishing powerfully

Your comment on Monsters Inc's intricate, creative world made me think... Isn't the worldbuilding in that film just EFFORTLESS? IIRC from the DVDs they originally had a "once upon a time, monsters and humans lived together" opening that they quite rightly cut. But in the final cut there's no exposition, no "guy from our world" they have to explain it to, no "as you know, Mike, we are monsters and we scare children"... Even though it's introducing so many new concepts, it doesn't slow down to explain them. Man. Every sci-fi/fantasy writer should go watch Monsters Inc. again.

@_Teej_2643 жыл бұрын
@@emblemblade9245 it can be an easter egg, but even with a different name, the story was loaded with cliches that made it feel very uninspired and subpar to what it could have been. It was an okay movie but it was so much less than it could be given how far Pixar has come. With the surface level political messages and the cramming of filler characters and common tropes just made it feel phoned in for cash rather than a passion project. The best aspect of the movie was the animation by far, because that showed detail and care. I don't know if it was rushed, but it didn't feel like they gave the time to keep the soul of the first.

For me the visual artistry of it made up for a lot, really blown away by how beautiful the details were and by how far they’ve come since Toy Story. But the main thing was that the theme of dealing with loss by accepting change that is in all the films is turned on the audience as we have to accept that the characters that we have known will not be seen again. The other movies are about the toys leaving children, 4 is about the toys leaving us. They are going off into their own world in the story and we know they are leaving our world in real life because the series is over. We are asked to deal with the fact that the series is finished, Tom Hanks won’t be around forever, and someday we will look back and remember how things were when we saw this movie. I was so conscious of that while watching this. Also, watching it with your children increases that effect.

Children have less experience and thus they can’t react as well or understand the consequences of actions. I think my issue with Inside Out is that canonically the emotions aren’t actually Riley, they’re guardians that help guide her. Individually they don’t represent parts of Riley’s personality, so watching the film isn’t really Riley fighting with herself, it’s watching a bunch of characters fighting for control over Riley. So it almost feels like she’s a prop in her own story and not a fully developed character. Idk I still like it and I respect that it’s a hard topic to depict.

ive never thought about it this way but you're totally right
@emblemblade92453 жыл бұрын
I either don’t understand or I don’t agree lol. It’s because of their imbalances that Riley lashes out and gets depressed, they absolutely hold influence over her mind. It’s not that they are literally her, trying to control every thing she says or does, rather they’re her psyche, and whatever psyche is dominant in a person’s mind is what influences the things they do or believe at a given time. Everything Riley does is because of her psyche, so they are directly responsible for that, they just don’t have complete control over her movements and words.
@lotofmalarkey4343 жыл бұрын
@@emblemblade9245 that’s totally fair, I think that’s a good analysis. I think what I mean by “the emotions aren’t literally Riley” was that the big moral of the movie is that it’s important to acknowledge all your emotions and not push them away. If the emotions represent literal aspects of Riley, then them being out of whack represents Riley’s internal struggles and them learning to work together represents Riley learning how to handle her feelings and grow as a person.But because the emotions are canonically not Riley, that metaphor doesn’t really work as well for me? I’ll admit that saying that they want to ‘control’ Riley was maybe a little harsh (esp considering the deleted scene where Joy treats Riley like a broken machine for not doing what she wants), but I guess it just kinda feels like the story becomes the emotions needing to learn how to work together to help Riley because they’re an important part of her actions, which kinda removes Riley’s internal struggle from being a character arc to just A Thing that’s happening to her that the emotions need to solve. I’m probably being nitpicky. I don’t want to fight, I swear I do actually like this movie. I think there’s some really clever stuff there, I’ve even written a paper for school on the emotional psychology of Inside Out. I just think they could’ve gone farther with it.
@emblemblade92453 жыл бұрын
lotofmalarkey right, I think I get what you’re saying. We only see Riley’s reactions based on what the emotions are doing in the moment, so it doesn’t seem like she has much agency in her decisions, or is aware of why she’s doing them. The end of the movie has Joy learn its ok to express sadness instead of shutting it away, but when we see Riley’s actions, coming home to cry and reveal her struggles to her parents, it feels more spontaneous and from Riley’s perspective it looks like a decision she made from a different influence than Joy’s lesson. Is that kind of what you mean? Makes sense to me if that’s the case. I think I was just so touched by the ending (as someone who’s been through depression) that I wasn’t too bothered by it, and in addition there aren’t so many Riley scenes that it feels like a glaring issue. But that’s just me!

Ikkrr I loved that movie 😭 I think he just hated it because it is obviously really bizarre to imagine a world of only cars. I agree w that, but I think as a kid I just saw them as personalities and that was fine. The scene between the protagonist and the female car as they stand by the canyon is so poignant to me idk why haha.

As someone who was born in the early 2000s I'm happy to say I'm glad I was around for the earlier Pixar movies and glad I watched them all they have all created such wonderful memories for me and have even help give my life a starting point and it's just getting to the middle WALL-E being the biggest one I've struggled with ADHD for sometime now and other issues but for one of my birthdays my mother had bought me a copy of the movie and to this day I still watch it whenever I'm upset or feeling any strong emotion and need to calm down it's such a big influence on me and I'm glad to say and with confident I'm a huge WALL-E fan boy

cars 1 is so underrated on this list..its such a great kids film...maybe if he understood route 66 old steve mcqueen films style of the hot shot learning to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the old and forgotten small town charm to heal his soul that has become corrupted in the spotlight and also the way it ends he would rank it higher..i have seen it so many times..its still great ....mcqueen is so hateable in the first act then you love him at the end..he just changed totally....which is why they never needed a sequel and if they did do one make it what cars 3 was sorta about...just better obviously...mcqueen is the star..wtf is cars 2 about?

Cars has a really good and sweet lesson, but I feel like I only really cared about a few parts of the movie. I wouldn’t rate it at the bottom, and I definitely give credit to the parts that deserve it, but it’s not really a movie I ever felt like watching again, unlike many other Pixar movies, if that makes sense
@Graphomite3 жыл бұрын
Beginning: "I hope you get mad cuz I don't care." Middle: "I feel so nice now." Climax: "Fuck you." Conclusion: "Thank you all." Not many plots can both come full circle and pull off a twist ending like that. Structured yet dynamic. 10/10
