I have no problem with people supporting who they want to support, but I stand by the fact that it’s impossible to have the same connection to a club if you’ve just chosen them because they’re successful, as opposed to that being your local, dad’s club, or a club that relates to you in a specific way 🤷‍♂️

Born in Leeds, raised in Leeds, live in Leeds 15 min walk from Elland road. Started supporting them in League 1. If they went to the conference, I would always stick with my club. So many great small football clubs that don't get the support they should have. I have had a season ticket and been going home and away for the last 6 years since I was 16 and have only missed 2 home games and 7 away games (and a few friendlies). Proud to be from Leeds and love supporting them because they're local and it makes it more than just football when it is where you're from.

I can relate to this. I am from India and I didn't have a local team to support till 2014, when the ISL (and Chennaiyin FC) came to town. I became a Dortmund fan around the time the ISL started. The reason was that they wore yellow, the same colour as the local cricket team (which I adored). I started to try and see every game and it was great. I cried with joy when we won and I cried with sadness when we lost. I was sad when Klopp (or Kolp because I was not able to pronounce the word, I was a kid alright give me a break) left. It really made me proud to be a football fan.

@hfc I don't really know if you know this but the cricket team I mentioned (Chennai Super Kings) have one of the most passionate fanbases in the league. I used to think that Dortmund and CSK were basically the same. That made me feel like if I stopped supporting Dortmund, I stop supporting CSK. I later became an avid football fan, learning all the facets of football. That made me adore Dortmund even more.
@OcEleven
@OcEleven 3 жыл бұрын
@hfc I guess it's mostly because Bundesliga's games were more accessible in India. PL, La Liga and Serie A were all locked behind some special channel which you could only get if you got an HD cable operator (which we didn't have) while Bundesliga games were broadcasted on regular TVs. I could have picked Wolfsburg (they were good in those days) but I went with Dortmund after I basically found them similar to CSK. My city is obsessed with Yellow if you don't know.

I've grown up in Dublin as a Manchester United fan because my dad was a Manchester United fan, my grandad used to take my dad and my 3 uncles over to Old Trafford via boat and train 3 times per season to see them play back in the 70s. As I grew older and into my teenage years, I became infatuated with football at all levels to the point of obsession. I am now a Drogheda United season ticket holder and have been to see them play in Europe and across Ireland. I still have a love for Manchester United and watch every game but it's just not the same for me as going to every game week in week out to see Drogheda play

I got into LOI recently and I support Rovers, I've been an Everton fan since I was born because of my Dad, I am thankful I don't support a top 6 club where fans are treated like customers, at Everton it's different, I've been going to games ever since I was 7 and I was lucky enough to go to an away game in Southampton in 2019. Tickets prices for top 6 Prem clubs are too expensive and they try to milk money out of their fans, we seen this with the Super League, the fact that everyone in Ireland supports these clubs when they could be at live football every week is annoying

To me, if you support a club and don’t give up when they are doing bad then that’s fine. I go and watch Nuneaton games with my dad, but we both also watch Liverpool on the tv. I celebrate Nuneaton goals as passionate as I celebrate Liverpool goals. Glory hunter/plastic is someone that supports a team when they’re doing well and gives up when they’re bad. Not someone that doesn’t support their local.

I live in Malta and I do support my local team (all my family) and also go and watch every game but here everyone also supports a foreign team. We never see our teams play in big matches. but if our local team plays against our favorite foreign team we will obviously support the local team. When Real Madrid won the champions league I was shouting and celebrating but when my local team won the Maltese first division (Promoted to Premier league of Malta) I was over the moon with Joy. Some Maltese people prefer to support foreign teams and that's why the average attendance of a football game here is just around 1,000. But I'm proud of my team and whatever happens I still go and support them. I watched my team go from the worst Maltese league (3rd division) to the highest (Premier league) in just 4 seasons.

The stand out moment must when Fenerbahçe played Man U in Istanbul a few years back, when Moussa Sow scored the amazing bicycle kick in the 2. minute of the match nobody even cared that we could not go through in the europa league the only thing on peoples mind was that we are beating a european giant on our home turf and watching a beautifull game the atmosphere in stadium was ellectric. As someone who lives in the US and has a dad from Manchester, I may be one of the only non “glory hunters in my entire country as 95% of football fans in America don’t care much about the MLS and all have favorite teams in the EPL. Idk why but it makes me feel so happy when I think about all the people across the world who support these big clubs like Man United even tho they may not be from that part of the world. Being a football fan is something so special I wouldn’t want to exclude anyone from being a fan of a team even if they are a glory hunter and yes that includes man city fans lol.

In my case, my place doesn’t really have a local team. I grew up around Arsenal though and often watched a lot of Arsenal games and still root for them to this day. It wouldn’t be any different in if I lived here or if I lived in London. I’m not rooting for Arsenal because they’re successful, I’m rooting for Arsenal because I grew up with them and have a sentimental connection to them. I despise gatekeeping clubs just because you by chance don’t live there. On the other hand, there is also sense in «supporting clubs just because of recent success is bullshit». Clubs like PSG or even Dortmund I would say weren’t that «big» outside France and Germany before recent times. Of course they’re still huge clubs, but back then they weren’t like Liverpool or Manchester level. Many people just ride the hypetrain, but I also get if you root for them because you generally like the club and get invested in it. I never really had that big a connection to Inter Milan growing up, but I feel like I’ve always had a little sweet spot for the club and the history. Therefore I choose to care about their games

In Sports outside of Europe, there isnt such thing as "Local pride anymore" just pure business. I live in Kota Bekasi, a city in the Jakarta Bekasi Bogor Tangerang and Depok area. I didnt really followed Indonesian soccer up until my local team reoperated in late 2022. The only option I had was Persija Jakarta (and I still am a bit of a fan of them since they are the wealthiest team, and since they STILL PLAY in my local Stadium (they got a new stadium, but there are still some operational issues)). Now what Fans feel and the officials feel might be different. The fans might feel a local pride, or at least I felt, when I watched Persipasi Bekasi beat Persikasi (local rival) and Depok City FC, when I sang in the stands with my Curva mates, but mind you, there was a Persipasi Bekasi before that moved to Bandung City in 2014, but never got recognised in Bandung, so they moved again. Now they are playing for Madura. A city in which they enjoy successes as they play first division. This made me thought about the similarities Asian sports shares with the NFL (I am Broncos fan, please stop the roasts). I have been thinking about the case of Bud Adams moving the Houston Oilers to Tennessee, when he left the fanbase in Houston. How evil? The Chargers moving to LA after being in San Diego for a lot of Decades. How evil? So outside of Europe? Not local pride thing, mainly business. My European team is Eintracht Frankfurt by the way as I used to live there, and they now enjoy success.

Being in the states, I didn't have ANY relation with European football until my teenage years. For the few years, I just kinda watched games every now and then. Afterwards, I decided that I wanted to get into the Premier league more, and actually choose a team. Since I didn't have anything else to base it on, I chose one that was going to get an American player in the Future, Chelsea. I heard this Pulisic kid was pretty good, so Chelsea gotta be expecting great thing from him. I definitely enjoy watching Chelsea play, but I don't know if I'm a fan in the traditional sense. I like alot of the players after watching them for so long (Mount, Aspi, Giroud), and I hope nothing but success for them now and in the future(Hell, I even bought a shirt), but I think I'm a "Pulisic" fan first, and "Chelsea" second. In this sense, I follow Chelsea news and games, but if he ever left, my interest in the club wouldn't be what it currently is. It feels _shallow_ when I say that, but I personally believe that if he got a move somewhere, I'd follow Chelsea a little less, and his new team alot more. I don't think this is glory hunting, but probably something similar to it. Am I a bad fan for thinking like this? Should I really be called a fan in the first place? Idk.... Edit: Better way of saying this would be that he introduced me to Chelsea.

Nah your not bad at all. It's not glory hunting if the player say is going through a rough time and you still support them. Glory hunting is switching sides depending on who's winning. Like if you support Leicester from 2015 and stopped supporting them in 2017 and then support Man City from 2017 onwards while flirting with the idea of becoming a Liverpool fan after seeing them win the league. Or supporting Messi when he wins a Ballon D'Or but then jumping ship to CR7 when he wins the following Ballon D'Or.

I support York because I’m born and raised here. People can support who they want, but people who support top6 clubs shouldn’t take the piss out of those of us who support local, because one reason a lot of lower league clubs have been shit for years is because most local people support top6 (especially since the widespread availability of PL football on TV) = not enough crowds to bring a lot of revenue. Example: York population: 200,000+ Average York City attendance: 2500😂. My school year had 100 students in it, the school was a 10min walk from the ground, yet I was the only one who supported York. I will always stand by the fact that the passion, connection and representating your city in away games beats watching Man Utd on TV any day.

For my family it's support the team that won the fa cup the year ur born. I was born in 2001. And just because I'm a Liverpool fan It don't stop me wanting to see other teams in England or abroad. Id love to watch ajax in Amsterdam. I love going local to Charlton or cray Wanderers. I'm trying to go to watch Brentford in the playoff final if I'm lucky. I love being a Liverpool fan but that doesn't mean I won't watch other clubs as well , I love teams that utilise scouting/stats and youth academy's. Some I have an affiliation through playing fm as that team like dynamo dresden. And I love team togetherness that's why I love dortmund.

My dad grew up near Southampton, so even though I live much closer to a different Championship side and was born in a city whose club is currently in the football league, I'm a Saint for life. Not to say that I don't also support my local non-league team, because arguably I prefer non-league to top-flight football: anything can happen in the lower leagues, it's so much more romantic than a corrupt business where the only way to get some good times and challenge the big boys is by being taken over by some human-rights abusing facist.

I was born 8 miles from WHL plus my family support spurs so I do. I once had a gooner from Lincoln ask why I support them in his Midlands accent while I have a broad London accent. Kinda similar to watch you said about an Aussie UTD supporter 🤣

Yeah I'm from Poland and my local team is in the 4th tier, although they were one of the best teams in Poland like 15 years ago they are washed now lol and I live in Ireland so not only do I not even have a local here because its a dead country but my I cant even watch my Polish local team so I just support a Prem team

So if people aren’t glory hunters and they say they “fall in love with a club” that they don’t live next to or have an affiliation with. Then how do they always end up supporting the best teams and then jump ship when the teams turns shit.
@willem551
@willem551 3 жыл бұрын
if they jump ship then yeah they're glory hunters, but when someone starts watching football, are they gonna prefer to fall in love with Steve Bruce's newcastle or Guardiola's City, thats just naturally why the better teams have more international fans, its not necessarily glory hunting, Manchester City is objectively better to watch than Newcastle

@@willem551 I don’t understand how you can ‘fall in love’ with a team like Man City tho. They don’t have principles or history like other clubs do. For example, if you watched Dortmund although they’re a big team you might fall in love with the fan base and want to be one of them fans in the stadium to experience the atmosphere. But if you’re a kid I can see how you could end up supporting one of the bigger teams but if you’re older I don’t understand it

@@mikelitorous5570 you can quite easily fall in love with any team you watch, also city not having history is kind of a misconception, they have been a consistent first division side. I've watched the players come and go and the club legends stay for years, it's not hard.

I live in Sweden and the premier league genuinely is more televised and has more coverage by media and TV companies. So it really is easy to support liverpool (in my and my dad's case) I have a local team that is up and down from the first and second division and I have literally not seen them play in years 🙄

From Philly USA. I support West Ham and Philadelphia Union. Follow West Ham more closely bc its easier to watch find their games on TV than the local club, but my local is my local and I support when I can.
