Here's a programme that really means a lot to me - I quite literally did learn to read with Basil Brush all those years ago. I must give an extremely grateful shout out to Scott for providing me with this recording, and the thinking behind uploading it is to see if anyone else has any of this show on video. Please get in touch if you do! Sadly, the beginning of this particular episode is missing, but there must be some full ones out there somewhere. It does seem a pity that such a fondly-remembered show should basically fall off the bottom of the internet...
It appears that, although this particular episode is dated 1982 at the end of the credits, it was actually first broadcast on Thursday, 13th January, 1983.
(Please remember that this is an off-air video recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)

I loved this programme growing up in the 80's in New Zealand, this show and Sooty n Sweep. Basil was so funny, I loved his laugh. Every time I hear that Jimmy Carter laugh, it reminds me of Basil Brush 🥰😆🤣

Oh boy....watching this brings back memories of a time when life seemed simpler and more fun ...lol....Channel 33....coming back from school and watching this with my family...My late father used to love Basil's laughter...cracked him up.....we used to think Basil was so naughty and such a truant.....and yet so funny....growing up in the UAE in the eighties was a blast...just one channel to watch (plus Aramco which aired from Saudi Arabia...but the transmission sucked..I loved the Superhero cartoons they had on Aramco and would strain my eyes trying to make out the stuff on TV through the frustrating static...lol..).....we used to play with our friends outside more.....life is so complicated for kids nowadays...lol..I sound like a seventy year old...but dammit..how things change!....

These episodes aired in 1992 in Australia or so, directly before Dr Who at about 4am or so, so I *used* to have most of them on tape as the VCR would always catch this right before catching a repeat. Although I am afraid I don't have any of them these days.

Oh, really? That's good news - if these shows were still being broadcast into the 90s, I suppose that heightens the chances of recordings being "out there" somewhere. Thanks for the info. :-)

Basil Brush was "bigger than the Beatles" brought me here in 2024 from 1974/1964 too. Gorr - that is a load of old bloomin codswallop of a saying isn't it? "bigger than the Beatles" Millenniums nailing Baby boomers in 2024 Basil's brush says don't get your brush in a binary twist. Ivan was a self proclaimed "failed actor" which is pretty harsh considering he started out well but decided upon his voice with Fred Barker. His national service was excellent in disguise and non celebration of such a huge hit. TERRY of June was his pal from de-mob. What a brilliant gift he gave to us all. Basil says. Their is no way possible Basil is a "Leicester" Fosse fan, as his whole life comes from Ivan and Peter Firmins brilliant carnation in the south of england. UTBB (Up The Basil Brush) the 68-80 one please.

I love Basil Brush. While looking for DVD releases of this show I came across an amazing fact about this particular episode: it was broadcast exactly one day before my birthday.
@VideotapeFTW
@VideotapeFTW 10 жыл бұрын
What a coincidence that is! And now you've got me searching for stuff broadcast around my date of birth... No luck with your search for DVDs, I presume? It seems that Let's Read with Basil Brush has been fully swept under the carpet by whoever owns the rights, and our only hope is off-air recordings. So spread the word! :-)

I remember this programme! During my second year at primary school, we used to watch this show every Friday and we had the books, but we constantly annoyed the teacher when we pretended to laugh like Basil! It has to be said, though, that I didn't really learn to read from this unlike you - I prefered Words and Pictures on BBC ("Top to bottom...").

I've always said that the very best educational shows are the ones that at the time seemed more entertaining than educational - and that certainly applies to Let's Read with Basil Brush! We used to watch Words and Pictures as well, then Look and Read when a little older. I've got happy memories of them all. :-)
@itsjemmabond
@itsjemmabond 10 жыл бұрын
You're right - the best educational programmes are those that entertain as well as teach - I call it edutainment! Unfortunately, apart from Think of a Number and, of course, Horrible Histories, there aren't that many of them.

itsjemmabond It's a sad fact that whenever TV costs need to be cut, the budgets for kids' shows are the first to suffer. Not a great deal of thought seems to go into children's programming in the UK today, now that it's so much easier and cheaper to import any old rubbish from overseas...

Bloody hell, what is it with Basil Brush episodes and not being released on home media. Both the 68-80 series and the 2002-2007 series have this problem. And I'm pretty certain his Blue Peter appearances and Swap Shop have been lost too. Sad fate for as good comedian

Theorising in the case of the original show, it could be due to all of the songs performed by the various guest stars and the copyright issues therein. Looking Stateside, Warner Bros. have a similar problem with the unreleased Hannah-Barbera film _Rock Odyssey._ Aside from production problems causing it not to be released in theatres, they can't broadcast it or release it on home video, because they only paid for the cinema rights to all the songs in the film, they didn't pay for broadcast or home video. The fourth season of _Mork & Mindy_ was held from release for several years because of one Beatles song that Mork sings for ten seconds in one episode.

Have you thought of contacting the B.B.C. or the C.B.B.C. to see if they have any clips? I'll bet you anything that they have some clips. They probably have full episodes too (which they won't give you).
@VideotapeFTW
@VideotapeFTW 9 жыл бұрын
Sailorsega Actually, this particular one was a Granada Schools production (Basil was obviously allowed away from the Beeb for educational purposes). I just wish all these programme makers would put their archives online - it's clear that a lot of people want to see the shows they grew up with, and they'd make more money through the advertising on their sites than they would by just letting them rot in the vaults. Unfortunately, it seems like too much hard work...
