In this short little episode we're just seeing why we can't insert a disk into this Atari 1050 Drive. It's a lovely unit and if we can get a disk inside, I'm keen to see how fast it is!

I got one of those drives for Christmas when I was a kid. I was super excited, but I had to contain my excitement as we were at my grandparents house and wouldn’t be home for several days. It was agonizing to wait those few days until I was back home and able to hook it up. So many good memories. I spent endless hours dialing up local BBSs listed in the back of a local computer magazine (one of the benefits of living in Silicon Valley).

I have one of these with an atari 1200 XL computer along with cartridges and discs I found at a garage sale, and it all works. At some point in the 80's the owner was using it for home finance or possibly some small business. i demonstrated it to a young guy i know who was into vintage computers and he couldn't believe it booted from the drive and worked. The keyboard has the issue of needing the keys worked a bunch to get them working right, but the entire system is there. I was pretty surprised when i found it, I had worked for Atari as a tech on the VCS and later the 400/800 lines back in 81 and 82, it was a real blast to find.

Brilliant video, glad you got it fixed easily. The caps that often go bad are the smaller ones '47uf 16v'. Can't remember the location numbers off hand, but as I mentioned before I fix these frequently and the main common faults are bad caps and the two doubler diodes. Worth doing. Other things worth doing which cause problems are: Clean the drive select switch. Clean the head and the pad that floats above the head. Clean and lube the head rails. Check for dry joints on the diodes. Reseat the socketed chips. The belts can get a bit dodgy but it's not really that often I've seen a bad belt. There's also a 1050 diagnostic disk that is a godsend, like an mot for the drive, well worth using to adjust the zero track sensor and motor speed.

Great little video - always fun to see things on computers that I remember but never got to use, except in Dixon's 🖥️ I could be wrong, but looking at the drive around 2:52 I think there should be a spring in the hook on the left of the metal plate to put some tension on it. Perhaps not, but it seems a strange design otherwise.

Your Nintendo switch dig touched a nerve here. I've just bought one for my daughter for Christmas and all she will play on it is animal crossing. Yes, I'll play Mario kart too as well as box boy (great game) but I don't usually buy current consoles. Also today I got a PS3 slim from eBay as my phat has given up again. The previous owner had the chips reflowed a couple of times and I delidded the CPU and GPU, replacing the thermal paste to get it working, but it always ran hot. The older machines are much easier to work on without specialised equipment.

My 1050 drives each have a US Doubler upgrade installed. It enables them to do true Double Density as well as a data transfer speed boost normally used by SpartaDOS but can be used by anyone (such as disk copy software) if they know the right SIO calls. It's rather trippy to see the sectors fly off the floppy then get blazingly written to the SDrive Max! Just remember to save the created disk image or you lose it and have to do it again.

As an aside I like that graphic of spec sheet for the current consoles showing how the Xbox and playstation rock the switch hardware wise, while the switch I find is much more fun to play, the other two seem more like work when I play them.

In loading PRGs, the stock 1541 Disk Drive has a transfer speed of "about" 400 bytes/sec, which is approximately 96 blocks (or 24KB) per minute. A drive that's only doing 300 needs to be serviced. ;-) If the Atari 1050 is doing 2400 bytes/sec, then it still slightly edges out the 1541 with Epyx Fastload (which is about a 5x speed boost), but would be left behind by more advanced freezer cartridges like The Final Cartridge III. -- JC
@TheRetroShack
@TheRetroShack 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting! Most of my research has the 1541 at 300 bytes per second ( eg. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_1541 ) but either way the 1050 demolishes in terms of out of the box speed :) I’ll have a look at The Final Cartridge III :)

The Atari's stock SIO baudrate is 19,200 but the 1050 does not read/write at this speed due to disk RPM, sector skew and the single sector 128byte SRAM of the drive. As far as I know it reads at about 7400bps, depending on the format of the disk. DOS 2.5 'enhanced density' disks read a little slower than a single density disk formatted from DOS 2.0s due to a different sector skew. You can hear the slight difference when loading single vs enhanced density. Enhanced sounds sloppier while single density sounds more like rapid fire. A stock 810 will read single density a little (%5 or %10) faster than a stock 1050, but a US Doubler enhanced drive will again read single density disk the same as a revision C 810 which are the most common. There are many subtleties with Atari drives. Tandon 1050's are common but about one out of every six drives uses a World Storage drive mech which are said to be better but I find the Tandon drives to be excellent and very reliable. When they are well lubricated and functioning they have a great and satisfying operating sound. atarimania com/faq-atari-400-800-xl-xe-what-is-the-atari-1050-disk-drive_28.html

Those cards (Center for Computing History) comparing systems had an Atari 520ST (June '85) but not one for the Amiga 1000 (July '85)...was that just a cutoff date when they were made or it was a subset and just randomly excluded the Amiga? I didn't try to date all the systems on there but the Mac 128K and Sinclair QL were from January '84.

@@TheRetroShack Looks like he's out of 1050 upgrades which is unusual. It might relate to the supply issues. Suggest you contact him. He may be able to make something if it's not showing in stock but maybe not. No idea. I do not at this time recommend removing the passive components from a 1050 to increase it's SIO speed as per tf_hh's suggestion for some 1050 upgrades. I did this once and the 1050 sent a surge on power-on to my computer and now the 800XL needs repairing. Not sure why this happened. Might not related to the removal of the passive resistors but unsure yet.

The Atari 1050 was a very good drive, much liked by all users. Yes, even more liked than the later XF551 model - though that one was a dual-head drive (truly double-sided diskette usage), supported a true double density (360 kB per diskette instead of 2x130 kB for the 1050) and was faster when using 3rd party DOS - the drawbacks were the Atari DOS 3.0 supplied with it (which was incompatible with pretty much anything else) and the fact that 'B-sides' of diskettes formatted in XF551 were not readable by other drives (as they have been formatted 'in reverse' compared to 1050 or the 810). Also, sometimes the higher drive speed (300 RPM) caused issues reading disks created on its predecessors (e.g. 1050's 288 RPM). On my part - when I had a choice of buying either a 1050 or the XF551, I chose the prior and never regretted that, as it served me well without any issues at all.

@@IcyTorment Good point - in fact, I read that same info in Michael Current's 'Atari 8-bit computer FAQ' a few years ago; I (can only) presume there was a difference between the US and EU packaging.. Here in (back then) Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, the 1050 was packaged with DOS 2.5 and the XF551 with DOS 3. To put it into time context, I'm talking about 1986 and 1988, respectively; even possibly a +1 year to both of these. To add - I realize I may have made the XF551 sound like a bad drive, which was not my intention; in fact I fully recognize the fact that it was technically better and thus the superior drive of the two. It's just that considering the price of each vs perceivable performance difference vs all the compatibility stuff, the 1050 was _possibly_ a better choice. BTW when I used XF551 on a few occasions, I had some very pleasant experience with MyDOS (as directories and sub-directories - a feature there that I recall having used - were a 'wow' stuff / big thing for all of us Atari 8-bit users); but frankly I do not recall if it took / was capable of taking some extra advantage of the XF551 drive. LbnL thank you, as your comment brought some sweet memories once again 🙂

The Happy upgrade itself probably failed. They weren't too reliable. You could have returned it to stock and it should have worked. The pad that presses the disk to the head may have needed changing, especially if you used a cleaning disk which are known to ruin the pad.
