The Navajo language is a complex and difficult language to learn, especially if you do not have the luxury of having daily contact with native speakers. Though textbooks are available online, audio is highly helpful in guiding correct pronunciation. This is the first of a set of videos to attempt to give brief tutorials on this Native American language.
This first video covers basic greetings, such as hello, goodbye, etc. Briefly, how to say "I like this..." is covered.
Though traditional Navajos provide more complex introductions than is presented here, such as a person's mother's clan (nilínígíí), their father's clan (yáshchínígíí), maternal grandfather's clan (dahacheii), and paternal grandfather's clan (dahanálí), this level of detail is not covered here. If you're seeking a higher level of Navajo language instruction, I'd recommend enrolling into a Navajo language course at Diné College, the University of New Mexico, San Juan College, Northern Arizona University, etc.
I hope you find these tutorials useful. Enjoy & have fun!
Note: Some of you may have noticed that I kept deleting & re-uploading this video. I tried to correct errors and glitches with the video. The frames kept freezing. I finally got it worked out so no more deletions of this vid in the future. Enjoy!

I apologize for all of the Caucasian people who have taken horrible measures in the past to see this language die. It's nice to know that it is still alive and kicking and I'm glad you're open and willing to share it with everyone. The generosity of the indigenous races of this land has always withstood our own :) FK

Thank you for your help in how to say "nerve" in Navajo. Have to keep learning whatever we feel is right for our culture, what ever culture it is. People who hate us "Dine" are people who do not know us and they are vulnerable to be a threat to their own society by hating others. So, it takes different people to make a world, good and bad! Be proud of whom you are, no matter where you come from! :D

Thank you for the video. I support any effort to strengthen language and culture. My ex-wife and my children are part Navajo and I have always encouraged Navajo culture, language, etc in the house. Ironically, I have generally known more about the culture and language then them (which makes me want to encourage them more so they can get ahead of me LOL).

Very interesting and well done. I like the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Navajo seems a rich and beautiful language to me, and, actually, I would like to learn more! I teach ESL and I'm always looking for ideas. May I give you a tip? In your "dialogue plates," it would help if you would include the English translation right alongside, or right below the Navajo. This saves an great amount of time and energy for the student.

Yah te eh! Hey guys, this is great stuff. It's always good to document your language especially if you speak it from your childhood days. I have one thing to ask you to add to your language lessons, okay? English is a very easy language to learn from childhood. But it doesn't have this sense of "case" and "declension" in the way that most languages use. You should google those. I think dineh bizaad has those things in the classic sense, and you have to explain that into English. Blessings!

Yá'át'ééh! I am planning to do a cycling trip from the Pacific to the Atlantic and I'll go through the Navajo nation. I love languages and different cultures and I thought of learning some Navajo during the next months (probably through an online course). As I have never been to your continent and I know nothing about your nation so far, I have some questions. I wanted to know if learning some Navajo will make my experience different and whether I would have the chance to speak the language (basic level, of course). How easily can I find speakers? Do most people react coldly when a non-Navajo speaks their language or do they appreciate it? Please excuse my ignorance.

Hi, my name is Jessica Mintz and I teach Language Arts in Whitefish, Montana. 7th grade. One of the books I have chosen to read with my class is Code Talker, by Joseph Bruchac. I often use KZfaq to listen to a book. I am wondering if you would read it and put it on KZfaq. I feel it would be way more meaningful if students could hear the Navajo language being spoken. (correctly) :) Thank you! Mrs. Mintz

I was hoping to send you a private message, but it seems KZfaq doesn't allow private messages anymore as of 2017; I just wanted to ask, out of curiosity, is Nizhoni an actual name in Navajo or does it just mean "That's nice"? Because the behind the names website and various other naming websites list it as meaning "beautiful" but it clearly just means "That's Nice." whenever I see an actual Navajo speaker such as yourself and some presumably Navajo people in the comments sections use the word. I know there's inaccuracies, but it seems like people just make-up Navajo names, if even that one doesn't mean what all these websites claim it means.

People can be insensitive about the way they ask others to speak English, so I don't deny that, but I think they do that because if you were to go south of the border, people there would be much less accomodating to English speakers, and so English speakers in America feel like their tolerance is being abused when others choose not to speak English. Actually, English is the most commonly used language in the world. Mandarin has the most native speakers, but English is the dominant one.
