Great video, as always! However, just wanted to correct you on a few points 1. Egwene does not gain control of negotiations with Rand this time, that happens way in book 13. This time, she tricks the Hall into declaring war, giving her full control of the daily running of the war effort. 2. Rand does not kill the renegade Asha'man; he fails to, and when he comes back Min has convinced Fedwin Mor to build a tower with wooden blocks instead of stone blocks. Rand slips him poison, as is customary with an Asha'man gone mad at the Black Tower

It’s not that Faile likes Perrin yelling for its own sake, it’s that his refusing to yell indicates either a lack of ease with her, or a lack of respect for her. Perrin’s big blunder with Faile in this book is apologizing to her in public because he gave Berelain the mission of approaching Queen Alliandre. In the prior book, and in their introductory conversation, we see Faile’s mother, Deira, take pride in her obedience to her husband, not because he’s the man, but because he is the one with the rank and title. Saldaean women follow their husbands on military campaigns, but that can’t work if the relationship is a distraction. On a military campaign, everyone has to obey orders and toe the line and warfare doesn’t care if your feelings are hurt because the commanding officer didn’t take your advice. If both marriages and campaigns are going to work, the women need to be good soldiers. Faile, and other Saldaean women probably, take pride in following orders and not whining or complaining to their husbands for special treatment. We see that when Rand tells Bashere not to bring any wives to attack Illian. He turns around and orders Deira to give him her weapon, and she obeys, proudly, to Rand's confusion. Now go to Perrin & Faile. Faile makes a case to undertake the mission, along with other people, and Perrin makes the decision for legitimate reasons - Berelain is the one assigned by Rand to negotiate directly with the Queen, as an equal. But she is also the person Faile hates, and Perrin can smell Faile’s disappointment, so he apologizes to her. And that’s not fair to Faile. Everyone has emotions, they can’t help that, but adults get over stuff. Adults don’t let their emotions make problems for other people. And most people have the option of hiding their personal feelings by controlling their facial expressions. But Faile does not have that common bit of privacy, because her husband knows exactly what she is feeling all the time. So he is effectively behaving like she is acting on every emotion that comes up in her heart, when she really isn’t doing anything at all. Faile feels anger, and Perrin reacts as if she shouted. Faile feels disappointed, and Perrin reacts like she broke out in tears. Faile feels jealous, and Perrin reacts like she just ordered him to sleep on the couch. To everyone else, Lord Perrin gives and order and IMMEDIATELY turns to his wife and says “I’m sorry.” What are they going to think, except that Faile is going whine and nag and make Perrin’s life miserable? Perrin makes her look INCREDIBLY immature and a horrible wife. And Faile gets this from Perrin, not for anything she does, but because Perrin knows her feelings, whether she wants him to or not. We see in her PoV that she is very careful NOT to make him feel bad, and she tries really hard to compensate for their different cultural expectations, but Perrin does very little in that regard. His idea of marital compromise is doing whatever she wants so she won’t get mad at him. Faile wants a marriage of equals, where they can deal honestly with one another and be secure in their commitment to one another, while Perrin acts like one mistake is going to cause the whole thing to fall apart, or like Berelain is a threat to their marriage. She’s only a threat if Perrin lets her be one, if Perrin chooses to turn from Faile to her. Berelain can’t MAKE Perrin do anything, he’s blaming her for his own immaturity. His overreaction to her seduction ploys make it seem like she really is the sex goddess and temptress supreme, and furthermore, it insults Faile’s looks and appeal by treating Berelain’s power of attraction as the greater. If Perrin liked Faile better, found her more beautiful and more sexually appealing, Berelain's temptations would not have much effect on him. Rand gets that a little, and when Berelain is trying to mildly vamp him into giving her a job, he wishes Min were present (because he's more attracted to Min). Even worse, Perrin just does not listen to Faile, who has been raised to be a leader & ruler. Perrin thinks he gets commoners better, being raised among them, while Faile can't possibly understand how ordinary people feel, due to her lofty birth. But then he gets a clue when Aram confirms one of the things Faile tried to teach him, and once she's captured, and is no longer running around keeping his leadership intact behind the scenes, suddenly he has to put all her lessons to use. Faile is far and away the best spouse in the series, until Nynaeve wins all the things with her Malkieri campaign, and Perrin is arguably the worst husband. But she gets a lot of distrust from the readers because of her awful behavior when they were dating, before they found out about his family.

Thank you for this deep dive into this relationship. It went way over my head while reading the books so I was always one of those Faile haters, until now. And in a weird way it kinda makes me think my own relationship with my wife has some similarities to Perrin and Faile that I could learn from.

> Saldaean women follow their husbands on military campaigns, but that can’t work if the relationship is a distraction The most annoying part about Perrin's POV chapters is that it so clearly IS a distraction for him. He's in an important negotiation with a Queen and instead of concentrating on what's happening in front of him he's wondering if he should yell at his wife more. Like, dude! There's a time and a place, get your light-cursed head in the game!

@Gunleaver
@Gunleaver 2 жыл бұрын
@@LeanoraMcVittie The funny thing in that case, however, is that because Perrin isn't concentrating, he is not weighing his words as catefully, so his ta'veren nature has more leeway and he says all the right things to convince Alliandre to join forces. He tries to be reassuring, and she hears the corresponding threat that he is trying to promise he won't do. He offers help, and she reads it as him flexing and showing off how powerful he & Rand are. Faile & Berelain get it, and they're dying inside because they know what he means AND how Alliandre is hearing it, which is why Faile chases him away so she can finalize the agreement. TL:DR - Perrin being distracted is a good thing, because he's so ignorant from not listening to Faile, that if he *was* alert, he'd have botched the whole meeting.

Elayne does not screw up a lot. Or not nearly as much as her best friend from the Tower or her love interest or, like, 90% of her colleagues and class members. Elayne is VERY self-critical and holds herself to very high standards, and so we get a distorted view of her capabilities. I think after Aviendha’s opening chapter, through Knife of Dreams, Elayne only appears briefly in the background of Toveine’s prologue vignette and through Birgitte’s warder bond, as far as other PoV go. Elayne is NEVER physically present in ANYONE else’s PoV chapters after they go through the gateway to the Kin’s farm. So the only perspective we have on Elayne’s choices and actions, is her own, highly-critical perception, which has been informed by her mentors, none of whom are particularly noted for positive qualities and at least two of her three major teachers growing up didn’t care about her personally, just her office. So, because she was constantly being criticized and questioned while growing up, she has internalized all of that stuff and thinks poorly of her own abilities. She makes remarkable analyses and assessments, and proves better at politics than even an Aes Sedai, but all she can think about that is that a child could have figured out what she did, and is always remonstrating with herself for not knowing MORE. She does this when she analyzes the Black Ajah dossier Verin gave them in Book 3, immediately crumpling up the papers in frustration at her failure to figure out more than anyone could expect, despite being the only one of the trio to see ANYTHING in the data. Elayne runs into difficulties at times, due to her sheltered upbringing, just as the Two Rivers folk do because of their provincial upbringing. But she's not spoiled, just unaware of other conditions. She adapts well, makes lots of friends among people who are hostile to her class or channeling ability and is one of the few characters to change her mind about people when she is proven wrong about them. When does Egwene ever admit she was wrong about a good guy she insulted, thought poorly of, or quarreled with? In the early books, Elayne is paired with Nynaeve who gets all the crowning moments of awesome, and in the later books, has to do a lot of unglamorous detail work that serves as Jordan's deconstruction of fantasy rulers, with only her own self-critical perspective on her efforts, so shallow readers swallow the stereotype of an out-of-touch, spoiled & egotistical princess, and write her off because she does not win duels or hand-to-hand combat.

If I remember correctly the "oath-rod" that Aes Sedai swear to on becoming... well, Aes Sedai, was originally a punishing device for channelers during the age of legends? So yes, it shortens the natural life span that they can naturally life to as a channeler of the One Power. There WAS a reason for using it as Aes Sedai after the breaking were not really trusted after the male Aes Sedai destroyd the world in their madness. Perhaps it can slowly be fased out after MoL though? Sadly Jordan did not live long enough to create any of the stand alones he was toying with that might have expanded on the times after the "Last Battle". I am just glad that we got a finished series at all. Thank you Sanderson! ;-)

While I enjoy the story overall, I just wish that the books were a bit more straightforward and to the point. I appreciate you doing these. I’m old enough to have read the books from their start. I’d get flustered on how long it took between each book and three times stopped reading the books because it was taking to long to complete. I’ve read books 1-6 five times, 7-8 twice and 9-10 once. I seriously can’t remember if I’ve read book 11 or not. I need to get this series done. I was not a fan of book 7-10 and am just watching your synopsis videos of those books so I can get into 11 and finish so I can move on with my life. On a different note when I was in my 20’s and reading 1-5 I could totally understand the thought processes of the the main cast as they were similar in age as me at that time. Now that I’m 53 and have my own 20ish children it annoys me how immature and irresponsible the main cast is. Makes me chuckle.

a) You're confusing the Aes Sedai Nynaeve is travelling with, with the two sisters from the Tower, there on Elaida's behalf. They're the ones who think Nynaeve is crazy. b) You've completely missed the windfinders, it's actually them who use the bowl, it's quite a big deal and the dynamics between them and the kin are important. c) It wasn't "luck" or plot armor that saved Elayne and the Kin from the explosion. They had actually all passed through the gateway before the Seanchan arrived. Elayne was doing relatively ok at unraveling it but then the Seanchan arrive and start throwing arrows at them so Elayne is distracted and she can barely hold onto the weave. At this point everyone else except her, Aviendha and Birgitte are well away and safe so Elayne holds on and starts running towards a safe distance and only then released the weave and causes the explosion. d) I'm only 4 minutes in and I think I need to stop now. Clearly you've just been skimming through the book and missed a lot of stuff. This is pointless.

I'm curious (and maybe in layer books we find out) but there are a few characters that seem to be less mentally stable later on than when they're first introduced, (elaida, the prophet, and toram riatin). I think while reading you think of real world reasons that all their characters could change this way (for elaida, she could be acting on her foretelling in book one about rand so she thinks she should be in control of the tower, for the prophet maybe be pulled strangely by all the ta'veren exposure in the early books, and/or actually being super inspired by rand, and for riatin it could be a lust for control of cairhien that's making his go crazy over time)... my point is I think it's padan fain, actually it's mordeth doing to them what he did to the rulers of aridhol (former name of shadar lagoth) so long ago. He's the joker of this series, jumping around from various people and whispering in their ear, I dunno. If anyone has anything to add here I tend to ramble but I think I'm onto something here

I think in one of Fain's POVs, he says that he "touched" Niall and Elaida specifically. The dagger made Mat incredibly distrusting and paranoid, and Moiraine said that given time, even people around Mat would be affected. Fain can inflict that on people deliberately, but it also happens to people around him. The guards on his cell in Fal Dara were friendly, joking guys but as they watched him they became sullen and shifty-eyed, same with his own group of Whitecloaks in Emond's Field and later. Fain has a lot of hidden influence on events, sowing chaos and disharmony.

As they were headed to the ship, I was thinking *finally, a group of people who won't just blindly follow Rand, he'll have to actually have some tact and maybe even some respect if he wants to get anywhere with them, especially since he's already insulted them by making them wait for ages*. And then he shows up and behaves as if they should be kneeling to him already and it just works because ta'veren. I was SO MAD I vastly prefer Egwene and Elayne's chapters. Their political machinations are just so much more interesting to me than Perrin, Rand or Mat's, because it feels like they're actually earning their accomplishments on their own merits, by their own skills, and not because the world just bends itself to accommodate them. I could read an entire book about Egwene's plots to take back power from The Hall Rand's chapters are my absolute least favorite at the moment, as I find him pretty insufferable. I get his life sucks, he's got the weight of the world on his shoulders, plus he's dealing with wounds that won't heal, he's slowly going mad, he's got PTSD, etc. But good grief, Cadsuane and Sorilea need to teach him how to be strong and not hard ASAP.

Listening to you relate the meeting between The Prophet and Perin, it occured to me that the whole story would have been a little tighter and more succinct if the abduction did not prevent Perin from taking Masema to Rand. That encounter could have so much more potential for great writing and story. I know that you like to mess around with things a little Daniel, a little Papa Hemingway brevity and editing done. I am pretty neutral on Olver but I know you would remove him and that would also tighten things a little.

For some reason this makes me want to comment upon the WoT fandom and anti -fandom. My first experience with the fandom or any good sized digital community was at TOR dot com. I had been reading the books, in no particular, order beginning with The Dragon Reborn for about three years and I was released from incarceration and eager to find all of the books available. I was told by one fellow inmate that 8 was the final book. My first trip into a book store was greeted with a rather impressive display of that segue novel Crossroads of Twilight. At the time, 2003, the local library was my only internet connection so I would go there and get the available novels and research about them on the computer. Leigh Butler was the mistress of ceremonies over there and I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions on the read and re read threads, for the most part. Now because of a few hot button topics there would be some fiery exchanges. Most of them were simply spirited debates but once in a while even posters that seemed like best friends would have a little sparring session over say Tuon and her clinging to enslaving channelers, or perceptions of misogyny or misandry and in particular, inclusiveness or what we have come to call progressive-ism or social justice. It seems to me that people were transferring emotions to the real world from the fictional. I am very guilty of this myself sometimes but I try to think before I press that post button! I am sure that some of the flames were doused by moderators but they do get through. Why my long winded essay? Because I see in the comments people saying so many of the same things I have seen so much of. Try to keep in mind that Daniel is not proclaiming to be 'right or perfect or even to be very good at this. I am only saying this because I have heard him say it. He is simply putting out the content that he enjoys and hopes a few others enjoy. He has his take we all have ours. I can tell you this much if you think you know a lot about writing or WoT, there is always someone else who is a little extra on that and will be happy to point you in the direction that leads you to the error of your ways, or is it The Ways? Peeking over there at TOR recently, Wow! There is a distinct trend that has been growing even more over there. I am not a social justice warrior but man they sure are. This is just a comment section on a KZfaq video. No one is going to change the world dramatically from here. The best inadvertent faux paus I made in, I think it was the read of The Gathering Storm, when I stated that the Seanchan were the Catholics of WoT. By the way there were a couple of Catholics on there that, quite politely, I might add, disabused me of the right to make such a statement. My meaning was drawn from a perceived correlation that The Seanchan viewed Artur Hawkwing as practically a deity and saw themselves as being the most direct line to him. My Aunt once explained to me about Catholicism being the most closely connected to Christ because Peter was the first Pope. I still stand by my analogy.

The only beef I have with this book is the triple cliff hanger ending. Like I'm pretty sure Elaine's in danger, egwayne just ends jumping through a portal to start the battle with the tower, faeil gets kidnapped, .. there doesn't seem to be much of a resolution and I'd say that's how Jordan has been for most of his books so far in the series but this one makes it feel more noticeable. (First time reading through.loving it but sometimes he ends in weird places imo. And this feels so much like a TV show to find out next time) it broke my heart that he had to poison his little ashaman guard...

What? Theres a lot of things you said wrong about this. Egwene tricked them in to declaring war and therefore by law she has full authority. We dont learn more about the bond with logain more until the prologue of the next book. Perrin doesn't find out about his wife till next book (and there isnt war till next book)

No, I far more have problems with the remembering the names of the Lords and ladies and the names of the Aes Sedai. This my second time I read the books. It is also so much better to read all the books without any long time in between...

just adding another comment from here in 2024 concurring that it's a bit odd to have a popular Summary video on youtube contain so many spoilers for future books and accidentally mix in so many plot points that actually come in later books. Some of the top comments will help you sort this stuff out if you're a reader, but uh... yeah. Kind of a bummer for this to be one of the top results and not really fulfill what it's claiming to be

Rand doesn't kill Dasheva or the other Ashoman they get away. After that he poisons Moor after Moor slips into child like trance/insanity. Grabs Min so they can GTFO Also he tells Taim to handle his shit away from Rand 🤣 The thing that struck me the most about this particular book was that even though Rand is probably politically at his strongest (so far in the series) mentally and physically I'm not sure if he's ever been more vulnerable. He's struggling with Lews Therin's voice in his head, with the voice sometimes talking to him sometimes rambling and other times completely disappearing. Rand is struggling to separate his own memories and emotions from Lews Therin's, also the voice keeps trying to grab saidene away from Rand. Rand is also dealing with PTSD and claustrophobia after being stuffed in a box and beaten every morning and night for 10 day's by the Aei Sedai who captured him in book 6. He's pushing his allies and loved one's away because he's afraid to trust anyone and he's afraid his enemies will hurt or kill them to get to him. He's got enemies and spies all around him and I'm pretty sure there's been at least one assassination attempt on his life for the last 3 or 4 books. The never healing wound he got in book 2 is now aggravated by the wound he sustained in book 7 by Padan Fain. Both wounds essentially oozing out different vestiges of evil and constantly keeping Rand in agony. Because of these wounds the taint in the one power is amplified and Rand can no longer channel without sever bouts of vertigo and nausea, at times he can't see straight, stand on his own legs or keep himself from violently vomiting......but at the same time he is a newly crowned King with two other kingdom's that he has taken over in Teir and Cairrine (sorry I don't know correct spellings) Elayne has finally claimed Camlyn and will no doubt ally herself to Rand once they figure out all there bullshit. Egwayne is Amrlyn, Perrin is essentially a King like you said but still..... the Forsaken are everywhere dark friends have shown up in tiny villages and great cities and even foreign countries. The White and Black Towers are on the verge of disaster. The Prophet is a madman spreading war and savagery everywhere he goes in the name of the Dragon Reborn. The Seanchan have returned and even though he defeated them for the second time in the series I think we all know the war against them is far from over. The Shaido have captured Morgase and Faille, and Matt is missing presumed dead...... I don't know how any of the characters are gonna get through this 😕 scary that I'm only halfway through the series. On a side note can anyone tell me why this book is called Path of Daggers? Also not sure why books 5 and 6 are named the way they are (The Fires of Heaven, Lord of Chaos)

I love WoT, but this book was high garbage. So much unnecessary fluff really weighed it down in a way that I've never had the problem with in previous books. The significant events of PoD could have easily been condensed to an addendum attached at the end of book 7 or the beginning of book 9 without the reader having been exposed to the sniffing, skirt smoothing nightmare that this book became.

This isn't spoiler free. It wasn't revealed what the outcome of The Kin would be and how they eventually integrate into the White Tower in the book. Stopped watching after that revelation, but even that's ruined a bit of the series for me. Please be more careful in the future to only include plot information that's revealed in the book, not what the eventual outcome is for different characters and groups.

@ the Saldean women like being yelled at culture thing The western audience will and probably already has screeched mindlessly at this, however once again R.J.'s broadmindedness shows here, as in fact even though it's not to an extreme extent, Eastern European (Slavic) women are in a much larger percentage than western girls favourable of "toxic masculinity" and many women complain of how their man is not assertive enough, man enough, and how he doesn't "slam his hand against the table" (figure of speech here) enough. This book is a feminazi PC redditor nightmare lol
