[This interview contains major spoilers for both Red Dead games]
How are we doing out there survivors? Today I am beyond honoured to share my interview with the one and only, man with the plan himself; Benjamin Byron Davis who plays Dutch Van Der Linde in Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2.
Ben has had an amazing and illustrious career in Film, TV, Theatre & Videogames including shows like Desperate Housewives, Chuck and Six Feet Under and movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp. He has also worked with Rockstar on not only the Red Dead games but also voices in San Andreas and motion capture/likeness for LA Noire.
In this chat we talk about process, working on desperate housewives, the friendships formed in #RedDead and some really deep conversations about what drives & motivates a character like #DutchVanDerLinde. This has been one of my favourite discussions to date and I am beyond grateful for his time,

RDR2 is not a players game it’s an immersive game. You become the character. I’ve got degenerative disc disease so I’m in pain 24/7. Some days are better than others and RDR2 was and is an escape from my very bad days. Only problem is I’m a 50 year old man that balls his eyes out every time I play it lol

I always cry when playing it too. I think what Rockstar did so well with RDR2, is that they created a story where you become the character without having to make the character a blank slate. So many immersive games make the mistake of presuming the player doesn't or shouldn't care about the lead [even the fallout games or the older GTA titles spring to mind] but RDR2 does this amazing thing of making you feel both like you admire Arthur and also that you ARE Arthur. That is awful about yer disc disease. I cannot imagine what you've experienced. I slipped my disc in 2018 and I've been in constant pain since then. I don't have the ability to play RDR2 yet but I have watched 100s of hours. This is the only game in 57 years that made me actually weep. I mean cry like a broken hearted little girl. 😂 I have CP with neuropathy and the pain is a miserable ungodly ass of a thing. Cannot sleep until you black out. So I understand my friend which is why its 0230 am here, and I'm typing this😂

"we've got to stop meeting like this John" every line he says has some power and some reference to the past. I believe that adds onto your theory of him not wanting to shoot or hurt John. He's tired of the fighting and the gun's being drawn on each other. I think Dutch spent a lot of time considering the mistakes and was so tired of it all. He might have gone somewhat crazy but there was that little bit of the original Dutch. The way Ben delivers the line always makes me laugh a little thinking it's a little joke but when you think about it, it means something more. Everytime I think about the game I keep realizing these different lines.

Such a fantastic preformance. There is a saying among coders- the shorter the better. If its complex it will be more digestible. When you have story going on for so long - it bound to fail. And it falterted but never did I feel disconnected from the characters. The day to day did not feel intrusive - a huge boon to your acting chops if anything. If actors wonder - do gamers notice ? Yes we do !

Working my way through your excellent conversations with these awesome cast members. I sort of hope that the Rockstar-writers never go out with any statements or information in regards to all of the "unanswered questions" - mostly because it leads to fans speculating, forming their own theories and spark conversations. Like the one you and Ben were having about Dutch' REAL intentions behind seeking out Micah.

This conversation with Ben was one of my faves, primarily because we really fanboyed out and theorised. I'd love to eventually interview them all but I've been told some are more private than others. Oh man, great interview. I’ve had the same take as BBD regarding Dutch’s motivations towards John and it felt greatly validating to hear I’m not the only one, lol. The entirety of RDR is about Dutch’s “redemption” in his own eyes. I think in the end, when he is at a lost for words with Arthur at the end, in that moment he realizes he f’d up. In Dutch’s eyes, him leaving the money and passing on multiple chances to kill John is his path of redemption for how he failed Arthur because he knows in the end Arthur gave everything to help John. Like BBD said, I’ll say it too, just my humble opinion.

I believe Dutch was genuine at heart but i think that all his and the gangs success (from what we know) in the past might have gotten to his head and made him believe that he was truly invincible and when he realized that he couldn’t outrun his trouble now when the government and the rich folks wanted him and the gang gone for good. The moment where he realizes it’s not like the local county sheriff and deputies hunting him and normal bounty hunters but it’s people that are way more professional and organized (no offense to the local law enforcement) and the loss of Lenny and Hosea the only two people that could talk sense to Dutch i mean we see Lenny criticize his favorite author Mr. Miller and not getting in hot water, and as most know by now Dutch is heavily inspired by Evelyn Miller and his ideas of America. So when Lenny criticize it Dutch actually gets a bit offended but Lenny explains to him in the best Hosea fashion that Dutch is a great man but it’s not because of Evelyn Miller it’s because of who he himself is and are, and Dutch embraces Lenny and acknowledge that he’s right. And the fact that no one else in the gang can talk to Dutch like that is what ultimately ends up being the downfall I mean the only reason why Micah can get Dutch to trust him is that he’s a bootlicker and says everything Dutch wants to hear you comparing him to Worm tongue is something I myself has done because it’s true they’re both slimy creeps and both are good and manipulating and deceiving others. And when I look on Dutch I see the same as Ben and I was actually surprised of how similar me and his view on Dutch is, I remember watching a interview with him for the first time a couple of years ago and I was like wow that’s pretty much how I felt about everything not that I’m completely agreeing with everything but I’d say 98% of what he says is how I see it.

Spoilers... Amazing interview. I actually teared up when Ben talked about his opinion that Dutch was thinking about Arthur at the end and was sparing John having to kill him. And I didn't play RDR1. I watched a play through of it after finishing RDR2 and loved the story and I do plan on playing it but to make me tear up about a scene in a game that I haven't played is a great statement to both games, the writers, actors, and every one involved. Thank you guys!!

Omg. Love dutch one of my favorites. SPOILERS RED DEAD 2 Many Will say he is not a good person OR is bad but ii argue a lot he got manipulated by Micah without Micah he would never have made thé bad choices or turn on Arthur and John lol. Awsome video Paddy love you

Please do a interview finding out why uncle is so secretive paddy!! I have to know. There is TOOOOOO much secrecy around him and also his original voice actor spider Madison. Check it out!! Is uncle Jack's father? Is uncle red Harlow? Red Harlow was saved by a guy name Jack!

How do you get interviews with all these big names?

In bens case I reached out to him via my friend Steve J Palmer but it changes on the regular. I met alot of folks during my time as a game dev and some as a games journalist. However, in the case of nick apostolides for example he reached out to me because he saw me doing a lot of good and being very involved in the twitter resident evil community. Most of these people are just fans too and love talking about this stuff :)

Alex was fantastic. She also definitely has incredible energy, but I feel like I've enjoyed all the interviews for different reasons. Like Rob Wiethoff was so sweet, Steve Palmer had amazing stories & Mick Mellamphy was also incredibly energetic to name a few. I feel blessed to have this opportunity to talk to actors from some of my all time favourite games.
