Our NY home has casement and fixed picture windows all around. Many rooms have 2 casement windows flanking a center larger fixed window. That's how we designed and built it in 1991. We used Anderson and house still has the original windows! I have, though, had to replace a couple cranks...so this was a learning process. With casement windows, remember to keep the track clean! This is a must, because a dirty track requires a LOT more crank pressure and that damages the crank casing and/or the crank attachment to the windowsill. After replacing a couple cranks, I made it a practice to clear the tracts twice a year along with window cleaning (spring and fall cleanings). Since then, there have been no problems. Oh, one thing I did notice is that first floor casement window tracts tend to get dirtier than ones on the second floor. Our original reason for going casement windows was because we could get them bigger and could match them with picture windows to give a more seamless external appearance. Casement windows are, imo, harder to break into than double hung windows. First off, the window opens outward and there is no place on the outside that one can latch on to. Even after breaking the glass, a person has to reach in, unlatch the window at two very different points (one down low and the other up top), and then turn the crank at the bottom. OTOH, from the inside, it is easy to open and even exit a home should you need to. In fact, our windows are some 6 feet high, and it is almost like walking through a door (just get over the 1-foot sill). We've never had to do it, but even getting out of the second floor would have been easy. At our TX home, we have fixed picture and double-hung windows, but I am thinking about replacing them soon. Looking around the neighborhood, I don't see many (any?) who have used casement windows. It seems that double-hung is pretty popular here...so I am still contemplating whether to get casement windows when it comes time.

Great videos! I have all casements in my house and generally like them. Couple of minor issues: the first floor outswing gets in the way of any outside patios near them; if they’re not protected, the window unit gets rained on if open; and at the risk of revealing the Luddite that I am, you can’t put a window air conditioner in them 🤓

I love casement windows long as they are good quality. . More expansive views with no bar across the middle like a single hung window. LIke you pointed out a better seal. I like the fact that the screens are on the inside so they won't get so dirty and tend ot last longer. There is so much to like about operable casement windows.

Yeah, this is a great video. Not just a sales video. I live in Japan and they don't make casement windows in a mass scale. It needs to be custom so, of course, very expensive. Do you , by any chance EXPORT ?? We are building a kindergarten and while Japan finally has double glass , they are 30 years behind the U.S in every way. We have casements in our house currently and I loathe them. Because of where we live having bars was an overall safety upgrade when we moved in and it rendered all of our windows just about fully inoperable. But even before the bars went on the hardware (being original to the house) was pretty much all failing. I can understand why some people like them but I cannot wait to upgrade to sliding windows!

The problem with casement windows is in the evenings when you close the window you trap the bugs in your house between the window and the screen. I had a home built in the 50's that has original casement windows and the bug issue was something I don't ever want to deal with again.

I believe what you are calling Polish casements are very different from US casements. Polish casements normally open to the inside and do not have a crank. These same casements also have a feature where there is a tilt open where the window tilts back kind of like reverse awning. These windows are called european tilt and turn windows. Personally, I have not seen these type of windows here in the USA.

This was fun to watch! I noticed that with most of my single hung windows, the wood is cracked where the window meets the window sill. For this reason, I am assuming casement windows would be better. However, at my parent's house, sometimes bugs get stuck between the window and screen when closing the casement windows. A gentle tap on the screen usually makes mosquitos and fireflies fly away, but beetles would be more difficult to dislodge. Any suggestions? I guess there are advantages and disadvantages to both window types, which would be a really helpful video, if you would like to consider it. Thank you!
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. The separation you are seen is the window sill no longer touching the window frame. That is a separate item and has nothing to do with the type of window being used. I found a spray bottle of water will make the bugs fly away.
@aliya2260
@aliya2260 3 жыл бұрын
Houston Window Experts Thanks so much for the reply! Is there any reason why the frame separates like that? I noticed it only happens (in my experience) in some of my single hung windows, and not at my parents house where there are casement windows. I think it must be due to water, because some water gets in and pools on the window sill during heavy rains (for my single hung windows). When we move, I want to make sure I don't have this problem again. Could it be a structural flaw in hung windows in general? We tried caulking, but the caulking cracked again. For this reason, I am leaning more towards casement, but the bugs on the screen problem! The spray bottle is a great suggestion! I hope I don't get squeamish using it though... Thanks for the help!
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 3 жыл бұрын
I cannot see how a casement would be any better than any other type of window at protecting your windowsill from separating. It's probably due to expansion and contraction of the wood due to humidity and it works its way loose. Maybe it needs to be attached better and then caulked one more time

Security (locking system) and egress and ventilation being the main considerations but good quality if not best... any pointers much appreciated.

I want the more economical brands best product for purpose??? Not the cheaply made stuff which you have discussed in your excellent videos, but not premium end eg Fleetwood....im not on a superstar budget : ) Going with sliding and french doors on the back of the house (views). The other windows will be for bathrooms (not sure what windows here), and garage (probably Picture) if they can be matched or I can find similar. At last ... I found your video on casement windows. We live in North N.J. on top of a windy ridge overlooking a lake, very hot in summer and very cold in winter - did I mention the wind?. My existing 2002 contractor no name vinyl windows have failed glazing seals and hardened closing seals. I've used Anderson 400 and Pella aluminum faced wood casement windows on previous houses, but one of the big box companies was pushing Simonton 6500. I thought the vinyl profile looked weak and fragile. Your videos have cleared up many points for the glass regarding Low E and inert gas fills - thanks. Most of your other videos cover different brand double hung models; considering full frame replacement casement windows; what brands would you recommend to consider? Most of the windows are triples 48" W x 60" H picture with 32"W x 60" H opening casement on either side. Its hard to view different casement windows around here. Please open a NJ office :)

Hi, until you get into the super premium category, like fleetwood, you're going to struggle to find anyone who makes a casement window more than 3 ft wide. If you find someone, please let me know. Yes, you can put three windows together. One idea might be to use a smaller casement windows on the left and right and put a large picture window in the center that does not operate. thereby creating a wider view directly out of The middle. Just so you know, Pella is coming out with a new casement window in 2021 that is a Kevlar belt driven mechanism. I believe that that mechanism will be mounted on the side of the window instead of the bottom. Stay tuned.

@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 2 жыл бұрын
WinCore is a good product. I like it better than Jeld-Wen. It is a little bulky though. The only way to get less bulk, and more glass, would be to go with a quality aluminum product or even fiberglass. The other thing to consider would be to go to a 36" wide casement in order to get more glass. A 30" casement is going to have a lot of frame to it. One other consideration would be to make most of the windows inoperable so you can get more glass and find a place for a couple of casements for ventilation.

Hey Jeff, We're building a new house soon in NW Arkansas and are looking at the Windsor casement windows. Between the Legend, Next Dimension and Pinnacle which one would you recommend for being their "best" line? I've also been looking at the Marvin Essential casement windows and would like your opinion as to those and which would be the better choice. This will be a custom build and we're doing spray foam insulation along with an upgraded hvac and zip system so we really want a good performance window. Thanks!

Thank you for watching and for your question. The three products that you mentioned for Windsor are completely different materials. Depends on what material you would like, and what look you're after. All of their products are exceptionally well built and perform very well. I do think that the Marvin fiberglass products are a notch above the products you're going to find from Windsor. Marvin is very tough to beat! The very best of Marvin product out there is called Infinity from marvin. They're not very many deers who handle that product across the country. You may find someone in your area by visiting BuyInfinity.com

@@HoustonWindowExperts Wow, thanks for the quick response Jeff! I really like the Marvin but know it's going to come with a much steeper price tag. It looks like they do not have a full fiberglass like the Marvin so which one of the Windsor casement do you feel would be the most comparative to the Marvin? Just so I can figure a high/low for a budget. Thanks again and I've learned a lot from binge watching your videos! 😆
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 5 ай бұрын
None of the Windsor products compared to the Marvin fiberglass. Windsor does not make a fiberglass product. Their flagship product would be the Pinnacle series, but it's made out of wood with an aluminum exterior. Is that what you want? You also have to remember that it's a much deeper framed product. You would probably need two by six construction on your walls.
@vtec350
@vtec350 5 ай бұрын
@@HoustonWindowExperts No, I don't want an aluminum exterior so I guess it would be between the Legend and the Next Dimension Signature. Their website doesn't give you a good comparison between their lines and which ones are the more "better grade" line like Anderson does. Of those two which would be the better window? I know the Marvin would be the Cadillac to these two (and the one I'd like to use) but in case the quote comes back super high I'd like to have something to fall back on.

@@HoustonWindowExperts Thank you for your quick reply. The reason I'm asking this question is as new modern trend, people like more big window and sunlight for each room. Given the max casement windows limitation of 3x5, adding transom window upper or lower seems to be the only choice. Now by watching your video it seems fleetwood make this combo into one to achieve the same result. However I would like to know from both quality and cost perspective in comparing those two choice. Which one will you recommend? Thanks

Jeff, Fleetwood will be a better window but cost 40-60% more. You pay more but you get more. I can't really make that decision for you because I don't know what budget you're willing to work with. The bottom line is that they're both great products.

Isn't an inoperable casement a picture window?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. It's a picture window in the sense that it doesn't operate but it's inside a casement style frame so that it mimics the exact same look as a casement. Typically picture windows have a narrower frame and would appear differently than a fixed casement from the inside and the outside. A fixed casement is essentially a casement without hinges or hardware.

why does it need the crank when one could do without it? like a traditional window?
@HoustonWindowExperts

Some brands offer a unit that has no crank. The benefit to a crank is that it keeps the window in whatever position you open it to. Otherwise the breeze would just keep moving your window around.

I don't thing that casement windows are practical for windy environments. Like Jeff said, the wind will damage the installation. It can rock the window and strip the hardware screw holes in the wood frame, causing the hardware to loosen over time. As the windows rock, they make annoying thumping and creaking noises. I wish that our home had sliding or hung windows.
