Great video I just bought the T1 aqua Maxx and this is my first ever SPS dominant tank ever it's been running for 1.5 months now and everything is great. Saying all that I'm dosing 2 part and kinda scared to swap over but I'm going to do it anyway. I know I'm going it will do better especially when all my pack SPS grows out. Thanks again this video has helped me out alot.

I am using a Burkert solenoid valve for industrial use and a Swagelok needle valve for bubble control. My needle valve has been with me for 16 years and still giving me that precise control. My 16 year CO2 regulator is a Harris oxygen regulator for an Oxy acytelene cutting torch. Just get industrial grade parts for your reactor, they last forever. I have set my ph controller to close the solenoid valve when ph in the reactor hits 6.25, that way the wear and tear in the solenoid valve is very low. My Kamoer is set to pull water from the reactor and drip it at 60 ml per minute.

I wonder if you could, in theory, design a sump with a separate & isolated chamber to store media in the sump itself so that we would not need a separate reactor. Would be great for larger demand tanks specially. That area would have 1-2 small air tight lids with appropriately placed openings for water and PH probe etc..

I have been using my Apex Classic with an outlet (3-1) powering a servo that allows R/O water to come into my sump. I have been using it without problem for about 5 years. The key may be redundancy and a timer. The outlet is number 3-1. Here is the programming in case anyone cares to either try it, improve it or explain how I must be leading a charmed life: ATO_3_1: Fallback OFF If SumpLo CLOSED Then ON If SumpHi CLOSED Then OFF Defer 000:30 Then ON If Output ATO_LIMIT = ON Then OFF If DoW -M-W--- Then OFF ATO_LIMIT (Virtual Outlet): Set OFF If Output ATO_3_1 = ON Then ON Defer 030:00 Then ON Min Time 001:00 Then ON

@melevsreef Hey! I have been watching a lot of your videos and have my own tank for about 4 years. I recently watched your video on calcium reactors and find it very educational. Is it not better to dissolve media at a lower pH like 6.4 and dose less then have a high pH 6.8 and dose more? 1. Less stress on the continues dosing pump. 2. Dosing less "low pH" effluent in the tank helps with tank pH. If we look at data provided from BRS. You can see that a +- 0.4 change allmost doubles the concentration of effluent.( it's more a exponential then a linear curve). What are your thoughts? Greetings, Roel

Devo I missed the stream, but what are your thoughts on trace element supplementation with Ca reactors? I know that two little fishies say they dose trace elements from the coral skeleton but there are more to corals than just their skeleton! Do you think multi part dosing systems like Triton core7 and aqua forest component three part have a leg up on calcium reactors because the complement of trace elements they are dosing cover a larger array of elements for things like the coral's soft tissue?
@melevsreef

I would assume the CaRx handles alkalinity and calcium, and everything else would be dosed based on ICP reports and Triton/ Aquaforest guidelines.

We’ve got ours set up, and it increased Alk to 11, calcium to 480 and mag to 1400. Do we turn it off or just let the tank settle? We turned it off as our corals were affected.

Two Gay Reefers if it increased numbers higher than desired, raise the pH set point to a higher value, so it melts the media less.

Hi Mellevsreef, i have my carbon doser set to 6 bubbles per second. But I don’t see any bubbles coming out of the bubble counter on my aquamaxx ca reactor. My ph still at 7.8 for 10 days now. Is this normal or something is wrong with my carbon doser ?

While I am in no way here to bash calcium reactors, one of the first things you mentioned with 2 part was that it "used" to be cheap, but people modernizing it makes it a lot more expensive, and while true, isn't the same true about calcium reactors? I mean the continuous peristaltic pump is $300, the "Carbon Doser" is often pushed as a great solution, that's another $350, we're up to $650 and I haven't even mentioned the reactor, of CO2 canister, regulator, controllers, etc. And this is the boat I was/am in a couple years ago when I was setting up a new 200g tank, I thought one of those "all in one" (not really) with bells and whistles reactors like the Vertex one (ironically out of business now) would be a good investment just to make up front, then I started pricing in all the "extras" (necessities) and it easily more than doubled the price of the reactor setup which in a way felt like the aquarium hobby as a whole "Wow that tank was a good price... now I'm ready for saltwater!" and the damage to the credit card hasn't even scratched the surface... so yeah I basically started with kalkwasser, and I have pumps and what not so pushing in the direction of 2 part is a much cheaper method, it's just a matter of how much will I need to dose, how much space will I need to give up for the containers.
@melevsreef
@melevsreef 4 жыл бұрын
There was a little redundancy in your list above, but you are right it gets expensive. You mentioned the carbon doser, which is the regulator, solenoid, and bubble counter in one. Still need the reactor, ph controller, CO2 tank, and a feed pump (could be a MJ 600 instead of the Kamoer I like). Plus media.

Hello, first thing i want to thank you for all the infromation you sahre with us. I have some doubts i am new with calcium reactors and i just installed a new one to my 190 gal reef tank. My set up is aquamaxx calcium reactor t3, kamoer, carbon doser, second chamber and i am using triton media (which melt between 6.0 and 6.2) actually running at 6.1. The issue i have is that my calcium reactor is getting a bunch of bubbles into it. But if I increase seconds in the carbon dosser to provide a CO2 bubble the PH starts to raise into the reactor. Wondering if you have some tips so i can avoid the bubbles in the reactor. I really appreciate all your help on this. Thanks again for all your help.
@melevsreef
@melevsreef 2 жыл бұрын
You could try turning off the reactor’s circulation pump, then rock the reactor back and forth to help force all the air to the top, and wait until the Kamoer has pushed in enough water to purge that air out. Then restart the circulation pump. This may resolve it.

Calcium no. Alkalinity, yes. That is why we test weekly to verify all is well, and adjust if necessary.

Hello melevsreef, Should the Milwaukee ph controller for a calcium reactor set to above or below what ph? Thanks
@melevsreef
@melevsreef 3 жыл бұрын
Mine is set to 6.7 currently. When the pH rises to about 7.0-7.1, the controller opens (allows power to) the CO2 solenoid, and CO2 now bubbles into the reactor to drop the pH back down to 6.7. When it hits that target, the controller stops the power outlet, closing the solenoid again. This opens and closes multiple times daily / nightly.

Why tell people to push through the calcium reactor even if it causes no issues when pulling causes no issues and would be safer?
@melevsreef
@melevsreef 4 жыл бұрын
It isn't "safer." Every reactor we use, we push water into it. Even our return pump pushes water into the display tank. We don't pull water through anything.
@googIereallysucks
@googIereallysucks 4 жыл бұрын
melevsreef but what’s the harm in doing so? Even if everything is pushed through doesn’t make it better. I had media reactors leak around the top that may have not if pulled. My rodi system has high psi with a booster pump and can make it leak it also that may he prevented if possible to pull. If a piece of equipment can reduce pressure inside of the reactor by pulling it is better to do so. I don’t see any advantage to pushing over pulling.
@melevsreef
@melevsreef 4 жыл бұрын
@@googIereallysucks And I don't see any benefit pulling water through at all. If the reactor leaks, that's not because water is pushing in too hard. It's because the seal wasn't lubricated, or needs to be replaced. As I said, it isn't "safer." If you look at the graphic included on the box of the Kamoer FX-STP, it shows to push it into the reactor. Calcium reactors have been around for decades, and pushing water into them is how they are run. Some people have opted to pull water through, that's all.

melevsreef maybe saying pushing or pulling is okay but being a adamant that pushing is the correct way doesn’t seem correct.
