When we talk about discrimination, we usually consider race, gender, and age. But what about size? Have you ever considered whether your weight impacts your ability to get a job or get proper treatment in the doctor’s office? Join Madison A. Krall for an in-depth look at the last accepted prejudice: fat. Madison A. Krall is a twentysomething health and medicine student based in Denver. In addition to academic writing and teaching, she loves finding ways to incorporate wine and cheese into every meal, discovering the love languages of strangers, and playing cribbage with her super cool family. As a proud Christian feminist, Madison adamantly believes we live in a world where people are inherently good and equality is possible. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

A 3rd world is a developing country. This term was used during the cold war so developing usually focused on specifically the military and nuclear weapons. Now it doesn't mean the same thing, and it is not as accurate, so most 3rd world countries are the exception.

You're already judging people you never met. You don't know WHY people are overweight as it is. And then on top of that, you're acting like we don't try. There's only a certain percentage that doesn't try. Honestly, you're already being judgemental before getting to know each person. For example: I myself, try my damnedest to take care of my mom, clean, and do whatever it takes to keep healthy. However, I keep it on because I am physically disabled. When I am in pain, I cannot exercise. I cannot leave the house, I cannot do certain movements due to joint problems, AND I had a lot of weight gain due to psychiatric drugs that were prescribed to me. :/ So yeah. Stop judging people you don't know.

Thin privilage? Really? I am a very thin person: 5'7'' and weighing about 110 pounds. I get talked to because people think I'm anorexic. Guys will look at me and tell me I'm too thin for them. I have well meaning friends and family come up to me and tell me I need to gain weight. I have people tell me I don't eat enough. I go to the store buy an xs shirt and it doesn't fit right, return it buy a small, return it buy a medium, then return it to buy a large which swallows me alive. People get on to me for not eating enough (I try to always eat at least two meals a day and snack several times in between). People tell me I need to put meat on my bones because I'm cold all the time. Doctors worry about low blood pressure, that I'm anemic, or that I'm anorexic and bring it up all the time. When I give blood I have to eat a snack because my blood sugar drops so low. So I don't know where you are getting that none of this stuff happens to thin people.
@44kgangel
@44kgangel 5 жыл бұрын
I used to get this from my overweight family a lot. I'm just under 5'7" and 112lbs right now. I've been asked if I was okay and told that I looked sick because I was getting smaller over the years. My family thinks they're healthy when they're all clinically obese or close to it. Just because we're thin or even have a HEALTHY BMI doesn't mean something is wrong. When your weight puts you at risk for many diseases or BMI becomes life threatening, THAT is when something is wrong.

Pegasusangel's Gameplay Im actually kind of working on gaining weight. Im 5’9’’ and 120-125 (it fluctuates). I was originally around 115 and lower. I was always cold and i got many comments. I realized that the reason i was so skinny was because i was nothing but skin and bones no exercise. Try joining a sport or something. Gaining muscle makes you more hungry and eat more while making your body feel healthier. You get nice muscles too. I still get comments. Im 16 and in high school so its expected but its very rare and you just kinda gotta stick up for yourself. Tell people youre sick of the comments. Also if you do sports you can be like “well i run. What do you do?” and it makes them embarrassed.

I actually do feel annoyed when people tell me I lost weight when I clearly have not. It feels like they're lying to me. Even though it's positive to let people know that it's a good thing they lost weight, I have lost weight from illnesses before, including stomach issues. It's not a good thing when you lose literally 25 pounds in two weeks or less, even WITH exercise and good dieting.

@@Okalani5000 what you are saying actually really annoys me. You act like being skinny doesn't have it's disadvantages. I am 6'3 and only weigh 65 kilos, which is a bit on the light side. I get told constantly to put on weight and get told to eat more. Every one has a perfect body that they want to achieve but many people don't try hard enough to get there. You shouldn't shift the blame to us about not being fit. Sure genetics don't help but you only bring it on yourself. I eat healthy and go to the gym 3 times a week, don't take that away from me because you don't like the way you look.

In this context 'thin' means she can expect to find a good range of clothing in her size, that she can expect to be comfy in a car or airplane seat, that she can eat in public without judgy looks etc. In this context it doesn't mean that her body is super lean or anything. Its used in a different way. Perhaps they shouldn't use the word 'thin' ...to me, thin means that you are very underweight...like not a good thing. 'Slim privilege ' would be better no?

@@Okalani5000 are you also exersising? Unless you have some sort of disorder you can't possibly be going to the gym and eating healthy and still be 300 pounds. The thing I don't like about this movement is that heavier people will readily blame anything but themselves. I hear people say 'I eat healthier than you do' but never leave the couch. Okalani5000 if your eating healthy and exercise and still 300 lbs then you have to go to the doctor right away. Because that is almost impossible unless you have a medical disorder and even certain medical disorders don’t make you that overweight. For example I have PCOS, I do gain weight easier and it is harder for me to lose weight. But average weight gain from my disorder is 20-50 lbs at the most. My doctor recommended an anti inflammatory diet to manage my weight and symptoms. I was about 40lbs overweight at the time I started my diet and I knew I was eating the wrong things and overeating as well. Currently i am back at a normal BMI. I have to eat les calories than the average woman and I stay away from gluten, dairy, and processed sugar. If you are honestly consuming the recommended calories and you are active on top of that. Then something medically is seriously wrong.

Whenever someone came in and made a comment about my weight, she’d jump into the conversation to let others know that I “don’t eat.” And it’s often followed by silence because what do you say after that?

I work really hard to keep my body in shape. I go to the gym every other day and I eat healthy. Today I heard two bigger girls saying I have genetically lucky, being thin and all, as they were eating donuts. It’s unbelievable how people ignore the work it’s takes to look healthy (real healthy not the obesity feminists call body positivity)

Am I the only one that doesn't find her thin? I mean look at the size of her hand? Here in Europe this is considered thick.. (and this dress is really not for her body)

Why do you have to leave a comment like this? Does commenting on her body size and clothing in a negative way give you enjoyment and make you feel better about yourself? I find this really sad. Please start to spread love rather than hate, and simply mind your own business

no darling you mind your own business, i will spread whatever i feel like :) If she go out to a huge public and repeat 100 times how thin she is ( and i obviously Don't agree with her) I can express my opinion cuz she is making a statement. This woman is far away from spreading love as well ...let me just point that out for you

Whe she says 'thin', she isn't refering to those with an ED (eating disorder), or those in impoverished countries. She means those within the 'healthy' BMI zone, or those percieved as 'normal'

Why does she keep refering to herself as thin? She is at an average weight. How anyone else noticed her repetitive tone as if gloating. Dude you ain't that thin.
