This video, with the apex screen shots showing the actual pH values and the programming is THE BEST of all the ones I've seen on the internet. This makes it very clear. I have implemented this exact method, and it worked perfectly and I now average 8.3 in both of my tanks, and the corals have never been healthier and happier.

Love to see this type of innovation. There hasn't been much advancement in a while in this area. Sure kalkwasser has been around for at least 2 decades but the more advanced understanding was not broken down to a general hobbyist's level. I was using 2-part + calcium reactor + kalkwasser for my 510g system but have reduced to just a kalk stirrer dosing only. It has simplified and reduced cost of consumables for me at least.

I’ve been experimenting with kalkwasser about the same time as everyone else a year ago. I independently did what Chris did, which was very simple programming in the Apex. I am glad to see I am literally doing exactly what he was doing. I too had to let go. It was scary. But it works. I dropped the need for a refugium as well. It’s a leap of faith, but ease into it. I actually ease into the method. With regards to his secret method of the pH boost beyond kalkwasser, I actually understand how he’s doing that as well, which I am likely going to do in the near future.

This was a great discussion. I am generally against chasing numbers. But, temperature, salinity, and pH are the few parameters which deserve exception. As biologically, they are so critical. If you get those 3 wrong, you won't keep a tank. I've also watched Chris explain what he's done on other channels, and I can't think of any reasons against his method. And this stream was a great breakdown of why he's doing it. Chris said a few time's "he's not a scientist" because he doesn't have the credentials. And while that may be true, his approach and understanding seems to be well grounded in the science. He certainly understands what he's doing and did a great job of explaining it to others.

I watched the 6 series regarding kalkwasser. Beginning 2023 i started a 500l aquarium. I am dosing 35mL all for reef from tropic marin, mainly to provide minor trace elements, and since AFR does not influence pH I applied the kalkwasser method end of april The tank is low in coral (startup phase) . I noticed this weekend the Ca level has been rising upto 480ppm, after which i did a 10% waterchange, now it sits at 465. Alk. is 9.5. I also use Tropic Marin ´s carbo dosing method, and i use a CO2 scrubber. I bought a CO2 meter to monitor the level in the room to aerate in time. Despite all these things, the pH stays at about 7.95 upto 8.05 _ 8.15. Not bad, but i want it to sit 8.25 to 8.35 and i can´t seem to get there without risking Ca toxicity. So my humble opinion is that this method is only for well stocked higher demand tanks, not for startups unless you eyeball the Ca level and do waterchanges, which on their turn lower the ph for a few weeks, makkng the whole process a bit heavy and time consuming... and i do not want to risk crashes after buying more expensive corals while not assured the method works as intended... any tips??

I suspect its quite similar to the very alkaline solutions Chris uses on the farm but more accessible to your average reef keeper, rather than those running a whole farm. Im really liking it. @Slide-Loc
@Slide-Loc 2 жыл бұрын
@@aquaticnstuff7666 I should have clarified my statement. In context with what he was saying regarding the impact on kalk from co2 and limiting the exposure within the mixing container to air (atmospheric co2). I'm aware kalk absorbs co2 but in a mixing container that is bad. Mixing containers exposure to it has been an issue for myself in the past and thus controlling the air going into it through a pelletized CO2 media would further control exposure in a vessel that has a longer dosing window (week plus). Most likely needing minimal maintenance.

Hi Marc and Chris, after watching the video three times I decided to start with the excit method. But I'm running in to the following doubts, I bought two brands kalkwasser, from one brand, when I mixed the solution based on the roughly 7gr per gallon I got PH of 11.44. Afterwards I decide to open the second package different brand and the mixed solution was even a bit above 12.4PH. My question is I followed the double vacuum bags, but every next time when I mix the solution I'm getting 12.00PH, thus, should I keep adding more then 7gr/gallon, or I should look to different brand and better parking? The second question the tap off is appropriate water volume, how do you compensate/ equalise the water level in the end? Thank you in advance.

@aciaquaculture
@aciaquaculture Жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, Kalkwasser is very reactive to atmospheric CO2. The other issue with some Kalkwasser is the purity. Not sure the brands you are using but if the raw material is on the lower end of what is acceptable, you possibly have to add more to the solution to reach the max saturation point of 12.4-12.44. It sounds like you are handling the kalkwasser correctly by making sure all or most air is squeezed out and then double sealing with another bag. The solution will react with the air around it by creating a surface crust that looks almost like Ice. This crust is carbonates. If that is opaque you have to much interaction with air. We combat this by using the styrofoam float that covers the surface of the solution almost 100% and that made a huge difference. The crust is now limited to the 1/2” of exposed surface area around the float. We use only the Reef Blueprint Kalkwasser. I know the owner personally and can 100% guarantee this is going to mix up to max saturation with 6.5g per gallon. He only uses the highest purity with an acceptable certificate of Authenticity according to the specifics he required when purchasing it. Bottom line, as long as your Ph monitor is calibrated and your confident it is, then keep adding small amounts of the Kalk you currently have on hand until the Ph reaches 12.4-12.44. Only 1 other possibility I can think of and that is the temperature of the RODI water you mix it. If the temp is above 82° 12.2-12.35 is all you will reach because calcium Hydroxide is very insoluble in water and temperature will dictate how much actually goes into solution. If the temperature is between 68°-81° 12.4-12.44 should be no problem unless the kalkwasser is compromised or really low quality. I hope this helps.

@@aciaquaculture Chris, thank you for the swift reply. I'm located in Europe and here we can get a few brands (Deltec and Rowa kalk). I'm will try now with new lab grade mix, that I found, but I was worried to put more then the 6.5g. Is it matter the grams that I use for the mix or is important to have the 12.44PH reading? My RODi is in range of 73deg, thus I should get the reading of 12.44. I'm using apex dos and monitoring the same way you explained and separate PH pen to check the mixed solution, I'm also using the styrofoam at the same way. Thank you one more time.

What I'm hearing is Alk and Ph are balance to each other like a set of scales. So if you have low alk your Ph is ok to have higher as it brings up the alk, and visa versa. It's just a simple ion exchange between the two. Does the CO2 get to enter the water and become its default carbonic acid lowering both ph and alk, or will alk or ph BUFFER that CO2 and turn it into carbonate/bicarbonate keeping [or raising] the alk/ph. Alk and Ph have a similar relationship with one another as coral and zooxanthella do.
@birkettN

Just to clarify... (My statementy is actually a question) we are dosing 24 hrs worth of evaporation over a 12hr period, so that is why the ml's volume are doubled in the APEX Modify Interval for the DOS. At 7:57 MArk pulls up the interval and the PH rule, BUT.... Am I worng that the iterval time should be whatever your "Lights off" schdule is. In my case, 9:00pm to 9:00am? In Marks example, the interval is 24hrs.
@aciaquaculture
@aciaquaculture 2 жыл бұрын
No, do not enter your lights out schedule in the interval. In my example, my average PH is 8.3. What you need to determine is what your average PH is currently and use that number in the rule vs my 8.29. Your PH will naturally start to decline when your lights go out and rise when lights are on. As you start dosing, your average PH will go up. Your average will change and should be monitored until you reach your goal. So I would recommend checking your average before lights out and adjusting to the new average in the rule. In order for you to dose your full evaporation you need to double that in the interval section because essentially you are only dosing when you are below that average which occurs at night.
@BobbyMcGeePhoto
@BobbyMcGeePhoto 2 жыл бұрын
@@aciaquaculture so, you dose an 24 hour time period?
@BobbyMcGeePhoto
@BobbyMcGeePhoto 2 жыл бұрын
OK… So Apex is controlling the dosing with “the rule” 24 hrs a day, BUT… it will only dose when pH is lower than what is defined in the rule. And the reason we double the daily evaporation rate is that in THEORY, it will only dose at night, when pH dips below the average. My tank is averaging a pH of 8 (well 7.99) so I should set the rule to maybe 8.1, monitor a couple days until the tank averages 8.1 and then goose it up another .1 until I get to 8.29?

Great video lots of interesting things. I have a slight difference of opinion in regards to following what the sea levels are. We can not replicate the sea in our tanks that’s a fact. Look at phosphate and nitrate levels in the sea they are almost non existent. If we were to do that in our home reef tanks we would get all kinds of nasties including dinos etc. I think we need to look at what is optimal for our little eco systems in a home reef not the sea reef as they are different.

pH is a measure of how acidic/basic water is. The range goes from 0 - 14, with 7 being neutral. pHs of less than 7 indicate acidity, whereas a pH of greater than 7 indicates a base. pH is really a measure of the relative amount of free hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in the water. Water that has more free hydrogen ions is acidic, whereas water that has more free hydroxyl ions is basic. Since pH can be affected by chemicals in the water, pH is an important indicator of water that is changing chemically. pH is reported in "logarithmic units". Each number represents a 10-fold change in the acidity/basicness of the water. Water with a pH of five is ten times more acidic than water having a pH of six.

I hope the Alk being high is ok, everything looks puffy and happy.

Question, do you need to raise the temp in order to get a larger evaporation amount? I would recommend using a vessel to dose vs the reactor for more stability. Happy to hear your corals are happy. Hi Chris, yes I need to up the temp for more evap, but Im still within reasonable temp, the chiller kicks on at 79deg and shuts off at 78… I have a magnetic ice cap reactor, My kalk stays potent for a few weeks, I dump it out every 2weeks and replace it with fresh kalk, I know if I let it go too long when my water level rises and the salinity drops down, it takes more solution to up the ph… I will try a 5 gallon bucket of premixed kalk! Thanks Chris👍

Update...! I went ahead and ordered the Reef Blueprint kalkwasser and It made all the difference in the world, previously I was using SR Aquatics brand Kalk and could only achieve 11.2PH and that was supper saturated!! I noticed an immediate difference when I mixed the Reef Blueprint, The powder irritated my skin immediately, my other kalk did not. The PH with the Reef Blueprint hit 12.2! I made sure to seal it with as little air as possible. I even had to put on a dust mask and safety glasses the Reef Blueprint is so potent, be careful guys! It also took a very long time for my Kalk water to clear up, the SR brand would clear in about an hour. The real test was my nighttime PH, during the day my PH has been 8.3/8.4 (I only run a Millwaki ph monitor calibrated) the SR kalk would have to dose about a gallon at night to raise the PH so in the morning my sump was almost overflowing and my salinity was down a few points from 1.025 to 1.023/22. Well this morning using the Reef Bluprint Kalk, my salinity was 1.025 and my PH 8.4! Im still fine tuning, trying to get my evap rate to match the dosing, also my alk is 12.1 so I dialed back my calcium reactor to almost nothing. One more happy story, I went and picked up a new Hammer coral from my LFS and it looked great at the store. I got to say It plumped up beyond belief the next day in my tank, and all my corals look incredible! Thanks for the advice Chris!!

Okay there is something serious missing here. He says only dose kalk per evaporation and ph and not on alkalinity. So What if you have a high evaporation rate or very low consumption? If you have 7.8 ph with very low consumption because you dont have many corals. It would take a lot of kalk to raise and to maintain the ph at 8.3. And with little consumption this would add enough alkalinity and calcium to raise your alk and calcium waay to high. Seriously what am I missing?

Alk is not the # to worry about. I still have a system with Alk over 11DKH and it was above 13DKH for 9 months. I firmly believe this chase your Alk is something beat into all reefers, for the sake of selling products. Kalk is cheap and IMO Ph is more important than ALK. Ask yourself this simple question. Chemists tell you to keep Alk,Ca,Mg @ values above NSW but why not Ph? From my experience there is no money in chasing Ph because Kalk is cheap. Water down some baking soda and soda ash and boom gold mine. We have the results to speak for this method and hundreds of hobbyists around the world thanking me for helping them keep corals alive and thriving. A lot of reefers cannot get past the fact that this is totally different than what they were told and have been doing for decades. It’s a lot to take in but it is simple to put into action. Energy is energy and I choose to keep it simple and stop chasing # other than Ph. I do always say “just don’t let your ALK,Ca,&Mg fall below where you like them. I like ALK 8.3-8.7 Ca 390-420 Mg 1350-1400. Above these #’s no worries Remember to let your corals tell you if something is wrong.

@@aciaquaculture You do not have to convince me a ph of 8.3 is very important, that is well documented. But let me give you a real world scenario using math and no opinions. Lets say you have a tank with very low consumption and super high evaporation. A 200 gallon tank that evaporated 20 gallons of water in a weeks time with very little alk and calcium consumption. Starting dkh of 7.8, ph of 7.7 with high CO2 in the air, and calcium of 420. Per your method of adding saturated kalk to your aquarium at the evaporation rate and your apex stopping when a ph of 8.3 is achieved. Your ph would lower quickly after each time you stopped dosing, and you would have to continue to dose more as the ph falls from added CO2. If you dosed 44 gallons of fully saturated kalkwasser in the coming weeks, your alkalinity would be 34 dkh and your calcium would be 600! And with very little alkalinity and calcium consumption in this particular scenario, your alk and calcium would not fall, it would only rise. In fact if you continued to dose kalkwasser at high rates only looking at ph in a system with very low consumption, your alk and calcium would hit ultra high levels. That is a fact. You are dosing calcium and alkalinity with kalk. If nothing is there to uptake the calcium and alkalinity it will rise at an easily calculated rate. For anybody that doesn't believe the math, google a reef calculator and run the numbers yourself. Keep adding kalk at a pace your tank can’t uptake the calcium and alkalinity, your levels will continue to rise forever.

Crazy how tank conditions can be. Ocean water will always be consistent because whoever created it made it so. I run stupid high everything my Calc 500 my alk 14 or higher my mag 1500 or higher my ph I don't even check and it all grows some tanks have slightly lower bur still would be considered WAY to high. Every system is different every coral and fish is different. I rarely do water changes just dose trace minerals. All my fish and coral are thriving. Growing and fully colored. My get down is dose no chemical products. Use real bacteria not man made stuff. Love and energy is real the more care and love you give it the better it is. One last point the more you check levels and mess with the chemistry the more likely you will have problems. I also use tap water lol. @@aciaquaculture This comment has nothing to do with your farm which I claim to know nothing about. It is talking about how your method is hands on because the dosing changes when the evaporation changes. You have employees there to manage this. 12.4 is not 10x more alkaline than 12.3. Not even close. Yes pH is a logarithmic scale but not like that. You don’t have to dose 10x the volume to achieve the same effect. I dunno where he got that from. 12 is 10x more alkaline than 11. 11 ten times more than 10, etc. Sr(OH)2 is not more alkaline than KOH. The former makes a 12.9 solution, the latter 13.5.
