@JZ's Best Friend Yes. They reached too far, too fast. It took a century for France to find its feet after the Revolution, but it was the death knell of the old monarchies and the clinging vestiges of feudalism in Eastern Europe. As Beau said, folks can get with it or be left behind, but progress will not be stopped.

I am a gun owner, I’m also a trans woman (question my orientation all you want, I did for decades). I laughed as soon as Beau read the “it’s too heavy” comment, also thinking of the M1 rifle of WW-2 (I happen to own one). To the angry commenter, grow up. Yes, current gun culture has a problem. There weren’t frequent mass shootings like recently happened in Buffalo 50 years ago. There were plenty of guns 50 years ago, including the AR-15. The change that has brought about frequent mass shootings as an issue has been a cultural change. There’s nothing else we can blame it on (I say “we”, because I am a member of the gun community). We need to fix that. Also, being LGBTQI has NOTHING to do with diminished bravery. LGBTQI folk face challenges cis-het folks don’t have to face, just to live day to day. And as for me personally, I spent 23 years as a firefighter, doing both wildland and structural fire suppression, and made it to Captain. I’ve faced plenty that tried to kill me. Bravery is not a problem for the LGBTQI, we have plenty of it.

@stormiewutzke4190
@stormiewutzke4190 2 жыл бұрын
@@wally3586 if you look there are several detailed breakdowns in this thread that are not a reply. Look at for it if you want more detail. The basic argument is that the military has chosen the current rifle for a reason and it has been highly effective. The advantage of the new rifle only applies to very long distance using a very special sighting system that isn't available and is really only effective in a military setting. In an example of the current shooting the gun used is by far the most dangerous rifle available for civilians. It was also illegal in that state. A switch to the new rifle very likely would have been less deadly since it is very hard to control and shoot rapidly. For those in that crowd its a detail that stands out. Considering that it happened in a state where they don't have control and was not legal to own it is very easy for them to point out that bans don't work and they have a point. Something does have to be done but just pointing fingers doesn't help. For those who are anti gun what more can you do but make bans. That was already in place. It's very much like banning drugs. Its far more effective to put in systems that brings in support and begins to treat the root of the problem. Let's be realistic the left side doesn't have the power to push through heavy regulation or enforcement across the country and doing it on a state level doesn't work. With the current court it is very likely that many of these state restrictions are going to get tossed out. I'm saying that if you can't win the fight then you need to negotiate to actually make changes. Taking shots at the other side that cauaes them to pull out of the dialog is basically just virtue signaling because it doea nothing to change. Remember that you can't control other people only yourself and changes happen from what WE do. I am open to different points of view and have explained what I feel is a reasonable argument. I am open to seeing things another way but I seem to just get people calling me out and telling me to defend the argument without explaining a single reason where I'm wrong. Blanket you are wrong and I'm right is the problem. I find history and firearms interesting among many other things and am familiar with that community maybe even part of it. I try to make reasonable arguments there as well and push back against extreme views. I can tell you that they are open to something realistic. However they do not trust most attempts to do something because the view of many pushing for changes would love to push in bans. Because of that they fight any changes and also are fighting to undo most of the restrictions. The gun violence in NY the state with I believe the tightest restrictions is used as proof that they don't fix the problem. Read some of the other reports about how valid many of the studies are. You will find ones done by groups that do not lean to supporting guns but are neutral and they typically will say that many studies are highly flawed and many of the restrictions don't work. Generally what stands out is mental health and culture clashes that cause unstable population in an area. Some cities like NYC and Chicago may stand out but the culter and restrictions go back a very long time. There are plenty of examples of states and area with very loose restrictions and high gun ownership that do not have any problems with gun violence that are easily used as a counter argument. As Beau often points out that when we "OTHER" a group there are going to be problems. If you think something needs to change then find a way that works. Or tell me where im wrong.

@@stormiewutzke4190 why so much time spent on talking about gun control? The call to action hasn’t been gun control in either video, but a change in gun culture and the attitudes that are fomenting incidents. As a matter of fact, in the vid leading up to this one, he outright stated that he thinks banning guns is about as effective as banning drugs.
@stormiewutzke4190
@stormiewutzke4190 2 жыл бұрын
@@stopabusingstatistics6291 I don't think you are familiar with the gun word. I don't mean that in any negative sense. It seems like you missed the point of my argument. It is a world that definitely neads changes and has gotten very toxic. Unfortunately it is very sensitive and lock onto details that may seem small to others. Its interesting that you mentioned drugs since that is what I compared it to. Just blocking things will never work. Just like outlawing drugs hasn't. I'm saying that if you feel like you need to attack don't use something out of context. Better off use an argument that isn't an attack and it something that helps make changes.

In 1945, the "Golden Age" of America, we were taxing the rich at 90%. Over 35% of Americans were in trade unions. There were strong anti-trust laws. Thousands of Americans were veterans of the Spanish Civil War, in which they were allied with Russian communists, fighting fascism. Communist Russia was one of our two best allies. We had a Democrat President, a Democrat Congress(both houses), and a left leaning SCOTUS. The caller was right, this was America's Golden Age. And it was as close to Socialism as we've ever been.

No, I don't believe 1945 was the "Golden Age". Black men returned from the war to Jim Crow America. Bigotry was the accepted norm in the country. Nuclear weapons brought new terror to the world. Universal healthcare was defeated by Republican Senator Taft and the AMA. The anti Communism/Socialism feeling in America was as strong as ever The marginal tax rate of 91% only applied to the amount of money earned that was over $200,000, and apparently only applied to about 10,000 people. Lots of that income was hidden using various loopholes, resulting in the rich paying about as much as they do today. Look at our ex-president's reported tax payments to see what the rich paid then and now.

Spot on comment about Hollywood glamorizing WW2 there at the end! I still remember the one and only time my Dad ever talked about his time on Okinawa during WW2. I was just a kid, hunkered down in front of the TV watching some John Wayne war movie who's name I forget now. The setting was Okinawa, and the Duke was in his perfectly clean uniform talking to another perfectly attired soldier in a clean and tidy mess hall tent. My Dad had walking into the room as the scene started, silently watched it for a minute, then very softly said, "It wasn't like that. It wasn't anything like that." I looked up and asked him what he meant... and he described a scene that was straight from hell itself. From his words, they had turned the mess hall into a triage tent -- the bodies of the dead were stacked on one side, while the medics tried to save the injured who were on the tables that usually would have been where the soldiers sat to eat. And the mess hall was still open... they had sheets splattered with blood hung up to separate the soldiers lined up for food from the tables laden with screaming bleeding soldiers. My Dad said he couldn't even smell the food... all he could smell was the blood. After describing all of that, he was pale as a sheet. Today, we'd probably say he had PTSD... back then, no one knew what that even was tho. He repeated "It wasn't like that" again, then walked out of the room. From that day on, any time a war movie was on TV, he'd just get up and leave the room. My Mom later told me that as soon as he returned home from the war, he threw everything away -- the uniforms and kit that they'd let him keep, as well as all his medals, certificates, and photos. It wasn't something noble and heroic that he wanted to remember... it was something horrific that haunted him for the rest of his life. But people generally don't want to see soldiers bleeding out on a mess hall table while their friends and fellows get sick from the smell of death on the other side of a bloody sheet. They want to see heroes, all shining and gallant and perfect, or full of testosterone and unstoppable machismo. So that's what they show in most of those movies, especially in the older "classic" films -- it's what sells the best, and it's what ultimately leads folks like the angsty commenter you cited to have an unrealistic over-idealized vision of what a war is really like.

I agree your Dad was a hero. I can only imagine what it did to him because I know what it did to my grandfather (who was also a hero during WWII). He saved his commanding officer from behind enemy lines but he ended up with schizophrenia from what he saw and did during the war. He was a paratrooper medic and he was ok for a little while after he came back but it got to him after so many years. I never knew him without it. That generation paid a high price for that war... and I'm counting my grandmother in that number. She stayed with him and took care of him until he died of a heart attack. I never knew until after he was gone that the schizophrenia caused him to be abusive when his paranoia was bad. She lost all her friends but she never left. I only lost her a few years ago though my grandfather died in 1987. It was a blessing that she got to live her life without having to take care of him. I still wish I could have known him before the disease. Sending love, light and big hugs to all who need it, k

As a member of the "gun crowd," I agree with this- especially that end bit about personal responsibility. I'm not saying that I'm a shining example of personal responsibility myself, but I have a hard time accepting talking points from the sort of people who brag about the shotgun they leave propped up (unattended) next to their front door while they're asleep in bed. And yes, I've met more than one of those. Buying a firearm isn't "taking responsibility." Learning how to choose, how to handle, and when to handle that firearm, is. It's unfortunate how many people skip those steps because they think they already know.

Gun owner, gunsmith, and long-time "pan-calibered gun-humping ammosexual gun fetishist" here...I agree. Owning firearms is a responsibility as much as a right, same with all the other rights. The "gun crowd" he sneers at, or Ramboners as I call them, are thankfully an incredibly small minority (less than 5-10% of the total gun owning population which is north of 105mil people in the US) and absolutely don't represent all of us by even a little bit. It is incumbent upon us to train, behave responsibly, and encourage *smart* legal controls that ensure that people with violent histories/behavior issues don't have access, and to ensure that people who are planning to own guns and carry them in public know both the law, and how to use them properly and safely for all involved.

and we also have so many responsible owners leaving loaded + chambered hand guns in cars, purses, backpacks etc, where kids grab it and accidently shoot a family member or friend. @hoorigan6838
@hoorigan6838 2 жыл бұрын
@@pktdbgnzwl We do. When it comes to cars, this has a lot to do with "gun free zones," where someone who is legally and responsibly carrying a weapon is forced or expected to leave that weapon in their car. There are lockboxes that can be bolted to the vehicle in order to reduce firearm theft from cars, but some would also argue that the lockbox (like gun-related stickers on the car) lets thieves know there's likely something valuable inside if the box isn't concealed. As for loaded, chambered weapons in purses and backpacks, I would argue that it's irresponsible to leave those weapons unattended. Again, this is a two-pronged issue, as policies can be implicated for part of the blame, but the owner's choices still play a role. This is part of why I don't like working for or patronizing businesses that don't allow legal/licensed weapon carry on the premises, or that have a dress code that doesn't permit for weapon concealment. I refuse to leave my weapon unattended, as I don't know who might find it- or worse, use it. While one can't reasonably place all blame for these conditions on the stigma surrounding the possession of a firearm, I do feel that it's a contributing factor due to the resultant desire in firearm owners to avoid the social pressure tied to that stigma. With that said, it's up to all of us to weigh our options. If you can't properly secure your weapon, you should probably either leave it secured at home, or change where you're doing business. I don't know why advocates for weapon carry would patronize businesses opposing it in the first place if they can help it.

As a Belgian, I would like to dispute the idea that the 1940's were such a great time in history. Given, I also wasnt alive back then, but I am alive now, and I currently live in a country where every single town has a big stone monument engraved with the names of the dozens of people that lived there that we lost, and every town cemetary has a separate section for children killed in bombardments during that time period. So I'm gonna go ahead and say that the 1940's kinda sucked, actually.

In the US, my understanding is that post WW2 it was pretty much an economic boon… as the US was isolated from battles and probably the only industrialized country with factories and fields left unscathed. US played the role of rebuilding the world, while adopting the best german scientific minds that led to the space race and such. In that segment of time, the US was the lone super power (industrial, military, and economic). Russia I suppose was there as a second in military capability, but not quite economically. But I’m no history scholar. Obviously since then, the US has lost some if it’s economic power as more countries are industrialized at cheaper labor rates. US is now more service oriented. But I’m neither a historian, economist, or guru of any kind to be an authority. Just thought this might help in understanding the US perspective.

Ok? But we are not talking about Belgium in the 1940s. Besides like Beau points out it is a myth based on Hollywood film making and play writing from across the USA parroting American Exceptionalism in the face of a World in turmoil because of Europes fascism, Soviet expansionism, Chinese internal strife the collapse of British Imperialism, Japanese threat in The Pacific,etc. And note that the USA refused to engage for the longest time behind the Isolationist proposition that our location made us invulnerable to all of the rest of the world’s troubles until we were proven wrong. The dominant event of the 1940s was the war and it disrupted everything everywhere for mostly everyone with the notable exception,to a degree, of Life in America. The poor continued poor and hard at work, the rich got richer of a very profitable war and the middle class grew increasing the national wealth. Both liberals and conservatives rallied to keep America safe and the war over there with a boost from a draft. The Beaches of Normandy were invaded by men from many nations not just Americans, and son was North Africa, Italy, and the Pacific Islands on the March to Tokyo. No I was not alive back them either and there are no monuments to the victims of the famines brought to my Caribbean Island by the maritime blockades of WWII but History is there for any one to explore and parents and relatives give unique singular perspectives to anyone paying attention and curious. Nostalgia and admiration of the good old times is the fundamental basis for conservatism, looking backwards, while improving on whatever we got right before is the equivalent for progressivism, looking forward. Both have merit to be found, neither is absolutely above reproach. The past is to be remembered, not worshipped as we labor to manufacture, a hopefully better, future.

That's a problem. I'm not saying you did anything wrong, on the contrary that was a pretty sane move. But civilization is not armed. Most civilizations have the common sense to strongly regulate arms, and I don't just mean current... throughout history. People are quick to point out that it's a method of control, and it is. Control is the defining characteristic of civilization. Control of crime, food production, environmental and economic concerns... all of that is civilization. It shoots a ~3.6 kJ projectile, which, of the rounds I looked at, is most similar in force to 7.62x54R. So, I'm sure I'm missing some details about the differences between them, and I'm definitely comparing apples to oranges to some extent, but that, to me, says that *when* the mainstream media outlets get a hold of their first XM5 mass shooting, the talking point will be that the XM5 is a compact rifle that shoots bullets with comparable force to a fucking sniper rifle. Regardless of the validity of the point, I can already see that that's gonna be a really, really strong argument for restriction of the private sale of the rifle to a largely-gun-ignorant public.

@@Skeloric Hi Skeloric, I'll do my best to respond. 1) I disagree with the accuracy of your question. I can't find any evidence that vouchers undermine public schools. Near as I can tell, your question isn't rational. Assuming your question was rational, I would say conservatives think vouchers are a good idea. The reason given is usually vouchers would introduce competition between schools for student's dollars. I would argue that such a system would take the power away from teachers unions and give the power to the student's parents. Such an arrangement would incentivize better performing schools. 2) You use the word "attack". That's bs and you know it. I would argue that it's not an "attack" to point out many schools are not producing educated students and something needs to be done. 3) You type, "Cut school funding." I thought I read somewhere that the US has one of the highest education costs per capita. This one goes back to the teachers union thing......of course the schools need more money.....imagine that! Think of it Skeloric. Who's gonna get that money? No Skeloric, not the teachers (Have they so far?)....the union and government administration is gonna get that money. That's how it's always worked. That's why we have high cost per capita and some crummy schools. 4) This last one you've confused me. I don't know the answer to this one so I'm gonna ask you to explain. Think of this Skeloric. I recently saw a report where no students in the Baltimore Public Schools tested proficient in math. (Please check me on this because I may have the details wrong....except the no proficient student part.) I've concluded from your questions that you are against vouchers and against conservatives on this issue. Another great perspective, Beau. When I engage (which is rare nowadays) with someone who wants to 'MAGA", I always ask them when they thought things were 'Great'. Invariably, as is the case here, they reference post WWII - '50s. When I point out the reality of the period - Higher, progressive taxation than today, Keynesian economics, very high union membership, higher wages relative to the economy, regulated banks, regulated industry, etc. - I'm told I'm just a libtard and don't know what I'm talking about... essentially the equivalent of tossing the game board and walking away pissed when they realize they had no game. I was blessed to be born from the so-called 'Greatest Generation'. I was provided with primary source accounts of the era, from both sides of WWII due to my mother being a war bride. On this topic I do not suffer fools gladly.

Yes exactly, in America's time strongest economic growth in history, the post-WW2 years, the top marginal income tax rate was something like 90% (yes, NINETY PERCENT!) for anything over $300k/year. That lasted all the way to Reagan, when the Republican tax breaks for the rich began to eat away at American economy and destroy the middle class. How different things could have been, if not for the delusional selfish paranoid anti-American evil conservative movement

Hi Genboomerex, If you ask me what time period the "great" in MAGA references, I would say the time period when the Democrat Party was lead by pro-America and pro-American leaders and not the America-haters, race-baiters, and Totalitarians the Democrat leadership has become. Thanks Genboomerex

"America peaked in WW2". That probably had less to do with how manly the men were, and more to do with the war that was flattening other industrial powers. The US had a lot of industrial capabilities that weren't being bombed or under threat of invasion. The rest of the Allied nations therefore relied very heavily on US exports, thus bringing in a LOT of money and influence/power to the US. To the person that wrote that letter, in case you read this, please, please, rather than join in the book burning, read them. History, economics.... there are a lot of very easy lessons you could learn in them. Or find it on the internet. But educate yourself a little bit before you go on an angry rant and you'll probably realise that your angry rant isn't needed because you were actually missing important and critical information and context to whatever has you bent out of shape. Stop listening to political talking heads and do some reading, it'll only help you.

If that makes me a Fudd, so be it, but I stand by the people that I've taught to shoot and introduced to firearms and the respect they show their tools and the ways they safeguard them against misuse.

As a lifelong gun owner I have to ask; why would ANY civilian need one of these weapons? The ONLY purpose of these rifles is to kill as many people in as short a period of time possible from as great a distance as effective. When used as designed for "protection" it means shooting the burgler or robber from down the street, which kinda defeats the purpose doesn't it?

Defending oneself from people armed with them comes to mind, and some of us just enjoy collecting militaria, I kind of like the 1960s Vietnam era more myself. The US military has always been utterly obsessed with long range shooting, that's a throwback all the way to the revolutionary war and kind of a point of pride in American culture, but long range shooting competitions have always been an American pass time so that filters down to the brass making the decisions. That's a case of culture driving decision making even when it's not necessarily smart.

That person talking about how great WWII was obviously never had anyone in their family in WWII because both of my great-grandaddies and great-uncles were in WWII. My mom's dad's dad was in both WWI and WWII, and he was so traumatized from what happened that he refused to let my granddaddy join the military, and when my granddaddy decided he wanted to join a branch, my great-granddaddy convinced him to join the Alabama National Guard so he could stay here. My great-uncle on my mom's side actually was at Normandy. The only thing I and anyone else knows about his time there was that he was there, and he was a parachuter that was in the first wave to go behind the German line while others were storming the beach. He refused to talk about anything else. Same with my great-granddaddy (mom's dad's dad). The only thing we kind of vaguely knows about him was he was a spy working with the Germans. I know nothing about my other great-granddaddy (mom's mom's dad) as he never once talked about any of it. None of them did. We only know that little bit of information based on bits and pieces they said, which, who knows, could all be untrue. We just don't know. The only thing we do know for sure was that being there traumatized them to the point where they were never the same and that yahoo thinks that's when we were the greatest? He's what's wrong with this country. War is NOT great. War is hell.

When I asked one of my grandads about it. He said war is a terrible thing that I hope you never see. Not sure about the great aunts.
