Do parasocial relationships exist in metal? Truth be told, metalheads have habitually not gotten too into stan culture over the decades. But in the recent influx of Gen-Z oriented metal bands: Spiritbox, Bad Omens, Sleep Token, etc; there has been a growing swell of people that are developing obsessive, identity-defining relationships with the artists that they enjoy. Let's talk about that.

With the recent obsession on bands like Sleep Token, Bad Omens, Spiritbox etc, specifically on TikTok, Twitter and KZfaq Shorts, I wanted to go over this recent surge of people basing their entire identities on one singular band or artist. What're your opinions on stan culture in the metal community compared to others?! Be sure to let me know down below!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

it suck that some people are like this because i have always thought of metal culture as being an escape from idolatry where we see everyone as humans and not gods.

Absolutely. And honestly I hadn't seen this happen in the scene up until the pandemic era I'd say, unless I was simply blind to it

Kek. Metal is all about idol worship and has always been. Every band wants to have the wildest stage show, the wildest clothes, the biggest amps, the craziest image, etc. Everything about metal is suppose to be larger than life and grandiose by design.

100% it does exists. I don't think making thirst traps is a good example, just saying you find someone really attractive doesn't mean you want to marry them, but I've seen people act like they aren't only friends with their favorite artists, but act like the abusive partner or helicopter parent of a band. Example being Bad Omens where obsessive fans straight up harassed Noah's girlfriend for simply dating him, or any band having any kind of association, from saying anything positive to touring, with Falling In Reverse.

Oh of course. Thirst traps on their own are fine LMAO I brought it up because usually but not always, the people who do that overlap a decent amount with the people who act this way. Falling In Reverse is another example in a huge way, people look at Ronnie as a damn martyr. One look at the comment section of the video I did on the new single proves that perfectly LMAO

It does exist and it has always existed, now it's just more noticable because of social media. And yes, metal stans can get as toxic as kpop fans. If you don't believe me then ask yourself how Dimebag Darrell died.

Oohhhhhh I clicked on this vid so fast. It's a topic I feel pretty strongly about. A lot of people forget that no matter how artists/other media personnel portray themselves on our screens, they are still *strangers* to us. We can love their work and (portrayed) personalities but it doesn't mean we really know who they are, *nor should we*. Because what they show in their work is what they chose to present to the world, and they are still entitled to their privacy. You've spoken mostly about the obsessive extreme type of parasocial relationships. But what about the ones where the fans are less obsessive, but still kinda let their own thoughts and opinions be 'lead' by an artist or celebrity. Like fans of an artist who were convicted of crimes, have hard to ignore allegations, or are generally just assholes. And these fans' behavior reflects that 'I love them, therefore they're innocent and good people.' (Not gonna name names coz I ain't here to catch hate but y'all know at least one metal musician that gets treated this way) I think this happens quite a lot, especially since artists are interacting more with fans nowadays on platforms like reddit and instagram. These fans then defend their favs to death and even send harassment to victims or anyone who says anything that's not 100% complimentary about their fav. And frankly it's creepy af. Again, WE DON'T KNOW THESE PEOPLE. To let a stranger decide what you think for you? Yeah.... No....

I take a quite opposite take: I don't care about any allegation or even proven bad thing an artist I like has done. I like the art. Caravaggio killed someone. He was still a great painter. This whole moral attitude towards what I listen to (or read, or watch) comes exactly from the pretense that the artist is a great person and basically my bff.
@lynxlubbpeeps
@lynxlubbpeeps Ай бұрын
@@marcodambrosio4711 Yeah if you notice I didn't mention that at all. It is everyone's individual choice whether or not to separate the artist from the art. From what you've described, you acknowledge the artist being a bad person but you appreciate the art anyway. I was talking about the people who deny everything bad the artist ever did, no matter whether they've been proven or not, just because they love that artist. "I love them, *therefore* they're innocent and a good person" Rather than your take of "I love their work, I don't care whether or not they're innocent/good."

that sort of obsession tends to lead to stalking which get dangerous and sometimes worse. Back in the 80s I used to belong to the Debbie Gibson fan club, that was as much as I did. I don't bother with Tik Tok but I remember the Bieber craze a few years ago. I haven't seen it in metal myself but I'm sure it exists.

Back when I first got into metal through Jinjer. It boggled my mind how many people idolized and worshiped Tatiana. Don’t get me wrong, she’s talented and beautiful but she is not a god. It makes me violently uncomfortable to see fanpages of her whose sole purpose is to simp over her.
