Today I'm going to talk about the hardships a team of talented animators faced while producing an imperfect yet beloved animated program.
Also, despite my tone in this video I mean no ill-will towards the staff of Ren & Stimpy, if you're watching this, you guys are great!

@@oluhamilton2121 As much as many may hate to admit, there was a quality and standard that John brought that was missing in the games episodes. The absurdity, and insanity was toned down to a degree during the Games era. Not to mention, the animation quality dips, when Spumco had taken it to new levels.

@@th3azscorpio The reason why John K was fired is because he could't make episodes fast enough. So Maybe Nickelodeon cared more about Quantity??? Still thought Ren and Stimpy left a legacy by having characters go off model.

Admittedly, this is the last John K-related video I plan on making for a while as I want to talk about other things I like, but I definitely agree. For as great as I think Ren & Stimpy is, I find the history of its production (in addition to John K’s works as a whole) just as fascinating as the show itself.

Ren and Stimpy was too grown-up for little kids, but they killed it by doing an 'after dark' spin-off aimed at adults. It was an absurdist masterpiece, faults and all. And there will never be anything like it.

TV Tropes is so weird dude, it can be a little bit pretentious at times but it more than makes up for it by how good a resource it is for looking up information for various media. Also I’m so sorry lmao

I love Ren and Stimpy! I'd love to buy a shirt but with everything surrounding John K right now I don't think it's the best idea. Makes me happy to see someone else who cares about the show as much as I do, this is a big case of separating art from the artist.

According to animator William Wray, John Kricfalusi created the characters Ren and Stimpy in 1978 for "personal amusement" while studying at Sheridan College in Ontario, Canada. He was inspired to create Ren by an Elliott Erwitt photograph, printed on a postcard, called "New York City, 1946", showing a sweatered chihuahua at a woman's feet. Stimpy's design was inspired by a Tweety Bird cartoon called A Gruesome Twosome where the cats in the animation had big noses. When Nickelodeon approached Kricfalusi, he presented three shows, among them a variety show titled Your Gang or Our Gang with a live action host presenting different cartoons, each cartoon parodying a different genre. Ren and Stimpy were pets of one of the children in Your Gang, serving as a parody of the "cat and dog genre". The network's vice president of animation production Vanessa Coffey was dissatisfied with the other projects but did like Ren and Stimpy, singling them out for their own series. Production of the series' pilot episode began in 1989 after Kricfalusi pitched and sold The Ren & Stimpy Show to Nickelodeon. The pilot was produced by Kricfalusi's Los Angeles-based animation company, Spümcø, and screened at film festivals for several months before the show was announced in Nickelodeon's 1991 cartoons line-up. It ran for 5 years, lasting 52 episodes and 5 seasons. Almost a year later, the episode "Sammy and Me"/"The Last Temptation of Ren" aired on Nickelodeon's sister network, MTV, on October 20, 1996, almost a year after the original Nickelodeon run ended. Nickelodeon and 20th Century Fox signed a two-year production deal in May 1993 for the development and production of animated and live-action family films, based on new or existing properties. Ren & Stimpy was mentioned as a possible property for development, along with Rugrats and Doug; however, the show's "cynical and gross humor" was a poor fit for a conventional, "warm and fuzzy" family film. The deal expired with no movies produced. Nickelodeon would later start its own film studio after parent company Viacom purchased Paramount Pictures. At the Wizard World Cleveland convention in March 2017, Camp said that Paramount Pictures rejected a pitch for a Ren & Stimpy feature film because of the "sour taste" left by Adult Party Cartoon, and they did not want any further connection with the characters.

@@TheGrandMac John K's issue is that in regards to Executive Producer, he was largely UNDISCIPLINED and too finicky. His failure to meet Deadlines came from that old 60s mindset of "Methodical Painstaking Detail". Its a Mindset that even Richard Williams had, but Williams was alot more passion driven and had a Camaraderie with his animators. John K was more of like a Big 8th Grade kid put in control with nobody mentoring him.

It's depressing how relevant Billy West's words are when you consider many animators have either been exposed as creepy scumbags in recent years. A tinge of madness is good for a creative mind, but creators like John K are examples of when that madness is taken way too far.

Yes, indeed. Chris Savino, Skylar Page, John Lasseteer, even non-animated veteran Dan Schneider have all been accused of sexual harassment. Butch Hartman has been accused of contributing to a phony religion and sayin anti-semetic and anti-gay statements. Even an author like J.K. Rowling is accused of anti-transgenderism. Where does it all end? Just enjoy the products, and remember that everybody is human and no one is perfect.

@TheYellowShyGuy I heard that one of the women that John K. sexually harassed (Robin Byrd) is trying to kill the Ren & Stimpy reboot, stating that the show's content is bad for kids (and signing her Twitter messages under the name of "Your Mom.")

She's so bitter about John's mistreatment of her that she's trying to slander all Ren & Stimpy fans as cartoon fanatics for perverted creeps and definitely not for kids. In other words, she sounds like a overprotective parent that Nickelodeon usually makes fun of on their shows. What happened to Ms. Byrd shouldn't have happened at all, but she prefers to take it out on Ren & Stimpy fans. I will squarely blame John for this because he should have left her alone when she was at that young age. Groomers and pedophiles never seem to learn about the consequences they will have if they ever got caught. Of course, it could be worse, like Jimmy Saville, whose grooming habits weren't mentioned until after he died. Even the BBC tried to cover it up and sweep it under the rug.

When you think about how PC and outrage addicted our society has become, it's hard to imagine that I used to watch this on Nickelodeon as a little kid. Actually, it's pretty insane that this was a show made for kids. However, it's still, without question, one of the greatest shows ever created.

I like the fact that you didn't say the games era was Bad because xxx reasons this video makes me feel better about my love for all five seasons. With episodes like Space Madness,Sven Hòek,Boy who cried rat,Ren's bitter half and Bell Hops it has become one of my favorite 90's Cartoons.

The Games episodes were great, mostly. Yeah, there were some episodes that were hit and miss, but they were still funny, and had beautiful art and animation. Season 5 was a major improvement over season 4, I will say.

Don't feel bad! As much as I make it clear I don't like John K, I still love Ren & Stimpy and appreciate how important it is to Nickelodeon's history. I actually got a shirt of the show myself this past Christmas.

@@th3azscorpio I think it depends on whether or not the objectionable thing about the person is the same thing that shows up in the art. For example, I could probably watch _The Usual Suspects_ again, but _American Beauty_ is too close to what made Kevin Spacey so awful.

Games Animation (now Nickelodeon Animation Studio) was Nickelodeon's in-house animation studio in Studio City, California, until it was moved to Burbank, California in 1998.

Honestly given the controversy surrounding John K I doubt that’ll ever be completed, especially since Nickelodeon’s gone on record saying they’ll never work with him again, but you never know.

Highly doubt it, don’t get me wrong that’d be cool to see happen but they’re both busy with other projects from what I’ve seen and Nickelodeon seems somewhat hesitant towards using the characters again thanks to John K.

No, it happened in September of 1992 during season 2’s production, Games had to step in and finish the unfinished episodes, this is why Billy West plays Ren in some season 2 episodes.

The Ren & Stimpy Show... After watching videos on the original creator and all the [space] madness he got up to, I can safely say that it's a paradox given TV form: Without John Kricfaluski (seasons 3 4 & 5), the show slowly loses its way with less fluid animation and some episodes holding up better than others. Without Bob Camp (Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon), the show becomes a mean-spirited, grotesque sneed-worthy shitfest that forgets WHY the OG seasons were so good, goes overboard to the point of uncomfortability and gives us ugly junk like "Ren Seeks Help" (I seriously can't believe that people like Media Mementos consider that episode "good"). Yet, despite Adult Party Cartoon, John K rightfully getting the boot and the slight seasonal rot it suffered during and before all that, The Ren & Stimpy Show is STILL a fantastic series. I can tell, because I'm using unofficial services to watch the series and I already want a UK home video release. It's not out to push alienating woke ideologies like so many children's shows nowadays, and it's not out to offend you like all adult shows nowadays: It's out to make you LAUGH, and it will stop at nothing to do so with its blend of hilarious gags, bizarre moments, grossout and shock used CORRECTLY, and incredible chemistry between the two leads. It manages to please EVERYONE, and because it did so, The Ren & Stimpy Show is practically nigh-flawless. Grotesque, silly, absurd, and appealing to both demographics. Proof that 1990s and 2000s animation is just better. Hope the new reboot does well and doesn't pull an Animaniacs!

Younger people can always enjoy things that came out well before their time, I’m twenty years old and as a Nickelodeon fan I enjoy researching their shows no matter how old they are. That’s like saying “it’s so weird to see people talk about historic events that were irrelevant well before they were even born.” It’s not rocket science.
