Big Mom is terrifying, but really pathetic in a way. Her inherited dream comes from a person who was trafficking her to the Navy. What's even sadder is that she misinterpreted that dream. She doesn't understand what seeing eye to eye means and takes it literally--modifying people so that they can be on eye level with her. She doesn't understand that having a kingdom with all the races is supposed to mean that everyone is welcome, not that she needs to collect different races like Pokemon by battling and conquering them. She also ostracizes people for their differences a la Pudding, instead of celebrating differences like in the orphanage. She is relentlessly pursuing a dream she doesn't even understand.

Not so fun fact: Big mom is a serial grapist! In SBS 90, a reader asked Oda how big mom picked her husbands and Oda said this: "Being a pirate, she kidnapped them, had kids with them and then threw them away!! Her only goal was to have as many kids from every race as possible. A truly frightening woman."

I still love that Whole Cake ended with Sanji saving the day by cooking. He's a beast in combat, one of the physically most powerful members of the Straw Hat crew, but at his core he's a chef.

I always wonder how effective Big Mom and Kaido would be as Admirals in a What If route. Azure Dragon and Pink Mammoth.

Big mom's back story hits so much differently when you're a father. I've raised two children and one thing I and many other parents have done could've easily set Lin Lin on a different path. That simple thing is to tell her what she did during her hunger fits. She legit cannot remember a thing after it happens and each time it happens, no one tells her "my dear lin lin, you did this" either because they are afraid to or it would mean she couldn't be used as a weapon. But having children and knowing other parents, telling kids when they did something wrong and explaining why is how they begin to learn responsibility and sympathy. When 5 year old big mom killed the giant elder, Caramel should have told her she had done it because Lin Lin truly felt terrible about his death. Even simply explaining what she did to the bear, explaining her strength and how she needs to control it would've changed Lin Lin drastically. But she had two birth parents too afraid of her to say anything, and two parental figures who just wanted to use her for her power, so telling her could've prevented that. I feel Oda having Lin Lin lose her memory of Big Mom was meant to show us one thing, that had anyone taught her sympathy, she wouldn't have hungry fits. When she was O-lin, she went much longer without food than she ever had before and besides making jokes at chopper's expense, she never went on a full on hunger fit. Even at the jail she doesn't get the red eyes or vacant stare, she doesn't have that one track mind for food. She can still speak and act full on her own volition. Maybe showing us that simply lacking sympathy is a big cause of the fits in the first place, that had she been raised better, the fits wouldn't exist at all.

Never voiced this out loud, but she’s definitely an experiment to recreate the giants, right? They experimented on her mother, assumed it failed, and then years later Linlin was born.

Big Mom is one of the best written OP characters. Deeply complex & fragmented personality. Shame that only thing many people care about is fights and portrayal within fights.

I swear Oda lost control during Wano. In hindsight I wish he'd taken a break before Wano started like he did with Egghead. Unfortunately, he didn't and a lot of characters suffered for it, including Big Mom. Who still has one of my favorite backstories lol.

How to know someone actually watched the Whole Cake Island arc: ask them to say "wedding cake" right after they say they're in Wano

I think another important thing about her being on Wano was her interactions with Kaido. It revealed what their relationship was like before splitting up and a glimpse of the rocks pirates. When she was defeated Kaido, despite claiming to hate her, was distraught and it's even subtly implied she mentored him as an upstart. Basically it showed us the in-between of child Charlotte and old lady emperor Charlotte, showing a more nuanced take on her character. Wano was reminding us that Big Mom was and still is an ambitious pirate trying to conquer the seas.

My only issue with big mom was that luffy didn’t fight her in wano. Luffy had a standing grudge since fishman island but was taken down by kid and law.

Can you do about Charlotte Perospero, also known as the man who just protected his crew's interests after being attacked, yet he is treated as the worst person and is even false fully being accused of Pedro's death by the Minks?

We need to stop the Big Mom hate.

I don't mind the amnesia sub-plot with Big Mom because it presented a sort of ticking time bomb factor: How long until Big Mom gets her memory back and kills us all?

Honestly in my opinion big mom is the best villain in all of one piece. She’s incredibly good as an antagonist on the surface and her character is surprisingly deep as well. Big mom is such a great “bad timeline” version of herself, her looping back around to be like a young child in her advanced age while still retaining the terrifying intellect and experience of a Yonko. She’s a threat on several axis’s.

Oh yes, the controvery. THE controvery. THE very controversial controversy that we have been talking about for over half a decade. THAT controversy. Of course, THAT controversy, Yzma.

I think Big Mom is the villain that urks me the most in this series. Not the worst, not the best villain, but the one that brings me genuine disgust the most. The cannibalism and her grotesque form withstanding, it's because that mentality you mentioned in the video, that she wants to have people not care about them, is very real. I have met several people in my life that act to varying degrees of that, in fact Big Mom almost feels like a caricature of that kind of behavior. They are what I would without a moment's hesitation call the worst kind of human being. Those who desire to own and nothing more. Disrespecting people, animals, and even things around them. And just like Big Mom they always feel more untouchable than they actually are, making your only option against this unchanging monster to flee.

I think that Big Mom had to go to wano and be defeated otherwise it's probably another 60 chapters at least and Oda can't waste time anymore. But it probably would've been better if she was defeated a different way

Personally, I would have saved her defeat for Elbaf; it makes the most sense for her story to end there.

You have to imagine that big mom is a granny. And she was still invincible without the volcano/sea combo. And she was fighting basically nonstop enemys and friends. And you call her helpless.

Always Remember, Franky on his motorcycle drives over Big mom and that's how the Straw Hats generally her in Wano. She was epic in Whole Cake island.. not so much in Wano.

BigMoms presence on Wano showed a few valuable thing: emperors are NOT about individual powers, its influence. Powerscalers hates this. Wano would have been much different if Oda wouldn't forget about the flagship and the rest of the crew. We had so much high caliber characters on that ship, its near pathetic that only Perospero managed to climb the waterfall. The whole family should have leave the ship and climb up to join the fight. It should have been a similar moment when Shanks joined marineford, but in a more sinister way. We got some information nuggets of not her childhood past, but her past with Rocks pirates. Yet this is a Kaido problem too, because even Kaidos past is unfolded. We all hope we get more details when Rocks D Xebec background will be revealed. So we fought 2 emperors, yet their lives true ambitions are still vague. Yeah... Kaido was a warmonger experiment from birth, BigMom was a powerhouse with immoral guidance yet we have no idea what they truly did most of their lifetime. Then we get a really valuable information about BigMom: similar to Luffy she values connections. She became a wild card just to protect Otama just because they bonded. And biggest problem with Wano, it was just too much for even Oda. The Charlotte family left behind, Morias flashback involved Doflamingos lingering presence Yamato?! She feels like a filler character too. Her only positive point that at least Oda did not made her into a damsel in distress character. Yet would be good to know who her mother was...?

I don't know if filler enemies were considered for this series, but let's take a look at Foxy next. Foxy gets a LOT of crap from the fandom because of the Davie back games, people saying he went against the rules and cheated when in fact, he says plainly at the beginning that Captains are allowed to cheat and intervene how they feel is necessary. The only time he outright cheated is in the ball game with his three members against Zoro and Sanji, where the said weapons are not allowed then the ref looks away when Foxy's team uses them. Every other time he cheats, it's well within the rules of Davie Back Fights. So yeah, as a joke video for a joke of a villain, Foxy should be covered.

Big mom does actually change a tiny bit once she regains her memories, she turns against the beast pirates for a second once she finds out that they destroyed the town and hurt/ killed the people in it that helped her while her memories were gone and knocked out page one because of it and when ulti hurts tama she fires a literal laser at her because of it, showing that she does care about those who helped her when she really needed it, as opposed to her usual uncaring attitude to just about everyone, including her own children, that she has most of the time.

I really love big mom as a character, I think that she's genuinely the one emperor who would be the most like Luffy, and I think the amnesia plot on wano was pretty genius to see how a character like her would be without darker influences. I'm even holding a vague theory where, in the current cover story, we may see her and Kaido again, and both of them are gonna have amnesia and become farmers or something of the sort, Kaido maybe overcoming some of that depression and gaining some Joyboy aspects, and Big Mom coming back as O-lin as a Kind person who picks on fights because people gave her food the same way luffy does

Liam, great video! As usual your analysis of the character of Big Mom was spot on. I'd like to add that Big Mom has been extremely relevant in the story even before she was officially mentioned via Lola back in Thriller Bark. I also believe that Big Mom or at least crew members have appeared in every arc since Fishman island, even recently in Egghead with Smoothie and Mon't Dor being see in a recent chapter. I personally don't like the idea of Big Mom returning after Wano but it may be a possibility. BTW this antagonist series has been awesome. Can't wait for the next one....oh and question...technically both Robin and Franky were both villain's in the story. Will you do a video for each, even though they joined the crew?

In defense of Big Mom: Kid and Law didn't 'defeat' her. They just 'pushed her out of ring' instead of properly 'KO-ing' her like what Luffy did to Kaido.

She is one of my favorite villains in animation. Her upbringing is tragic, her power immense, her savagery is wild yet somewhere inside she is an aloof child. Without plot armor, you don't stand a chance.

One comment on Kidd ans Law vs Big Mom is that, to me, they DO have one narrative throughline that connects them. It is just... not a very personal one. Big Mom was, of all the living Emperors, the one who insisted the most on the untouchable of her position by "bratty upstarts". Her speech on Wano about how Kidd and Law were a dime a dozen, just two other idiots trying to take down a god, reverted me back all the way to her first appearance, where she was a demon far more intimidating than anyone else. In a way, that is to me what Big Mom means in Wano. A contrast to Kaido's "gatekeeper of joyboy", who does not want to believe anyone can challenge him, but hopes in it almost religiously; Big Mom genuinely believes her position on top of the food chain is unbeatable and unsurmountable. She has stood there for half a century, defeated countless worst generations, and now two punks want to defeat her? And that is why I think, in a way, Kidd has more to offer as the protagonist to her antagonist in that fight. Of all the supernovas in that arc, Kidd is the one who has the least amount of nepotism, special chosen by fate stuff and had the most drive. He is the one who represents that drive of being the ambitious idiot willing to throw his life on the line for glory. Law... was there.

WCI is my favorite arc, alice in wonderland psychedelic, deep weird horror, crazy powerups and fights, and a surprisingly beautiful love story its got everything

Imagine having a channel for fictional pirates and thinking that if you were in that world, you would be a pirate, maybe even one of the emperors, but you have to make a commercial for flavored air, get humbled and realize you would be a lapdog for the government in one piece

I caught up to the series at the beginning of whole cake. Read 10 chapters every morning during college to just catch up. When I did it was awesome because big mom was so monstrous during the time.

Big Mom is far and away the best villain in the series and has the best arc in the story

Linlin is one of my most favorite characters in terms of story. I found it infuriating how Oda ended her story… I genuinely hope and believe that she, and maybe even Kaido, are still alive. I don’t see why she wouldn’t be able to use the last of her strength to create a homie out of the magma around her. We also saw a massive explosion and something flying into the air in the aftermath of Luffys battle. Not to mention the Big Mom pirates were still outside Wano which we know because Morgans says CP0 sent a last message before stating they see the BM pirates. At the bare minimum, their crew is still a factor and hopefully by extension their captains (LinLin and Kaido).

Speaking of having A-list actors as extras, these honestly are some of the best moments in films. Like Cuban fury with Simon Pegg just looking really confused for like 5 seconds when Nick Frost was dancing

As for whether Oda ever had a plan for Kid, I've heard a theory that makes sense to me. It's a theory that suggests that Oda originally had something different planned for Law, and Kid was intended to have a slightly modified version of Law's backstory, but he made changes once he saw Law's popularity. There's a few reasons I believe this theory has some merit. One is that Kid's power should be just as capable of curing White Lead poisoning as Law's fruit is since the magnetism can draw the metallic lead out of his body. Another is the way Lid was originally set up to be seen as either a threat or genuine rival for Luffy because of his higher bounty. The third is that I can easily imagine the young version of Law we see in the flashback turning out to be more like Kid than Law turned out. By which I mean it would make sense if he was still very angry, violent, and the kind of person who would not care about collateral damage at all.

Her redemption will be finding out the giant kids from Punk Hazard are hers. Their crave for candy and rampages and ceaser fearing coming face to face to her could be cuz he used her DNA and didn’t pay and fled to work for Daflamingo and Kaido. She will finally have her family at full with finally having giant children and finding out the straw hats saved them.

The true realization she would have been a good person without pirate and navy influences was when she got to the prison in Wano she didnt have a tantrum for herself because there was no red bean soup. She went on that tantrum because she wanted to give that soup back to the people that helped her and gave her all they had. Another moment when she is told the village was destroyed and she was genuinely hurt. 60+ years of being a pirate isnt going to be overwritten by a few days of clarity but shes not a bad person at heart.

My issue with law and kid vs big mom is that she doesn't physically feel like the same character from whole cake. Every attack directed to her couldn't even scratch her skin or make her budge while on wano she gets a transformation that makes her even more powerful only to break her arm after getting pushed against a wall. Her flashy new attacks and powerups are shown to be monstruously powerful and yet Oda didn't let her cause any damage to law or kid despite hitting them over and over and over. But the biggest problem to me has to be her main homies. They're also absurdly strong characters with minds of their own who can endlessly regenerate and should turn any fight with big mom into an uneven 4v1 and yet they were hardly given stuff to do. No matter what big mom does she should always have someone to watch her back and this aspect of her character has been butchered by that fight, especially with misery, who essentially made her lose 2 fighters only to create one that did one attack (from which kid instantly healed) and just sit and watch big mom get pummeled for an entire chapter and fall to her death.

I bought a Füm thanks to you. I don't have it yet, though. I am very much looking forward to it being in my hands and get me to stop vaping.

Only One Piece could make a granny with a sweet tooth into one of the most terrifying villains

I always thought a better way to use big mom on wano, would have been to have her and Kaido betray each other. Cause they're the old generation of pirates. That way, Luffy, Kid, Law could prove that their teamwork (even while bickering) would be the key to victory. Making the rooftop battle more like a; 5 v 1 v 1.

If you need themes for Big Mom vs Kid and Law, it was generational clash, worst generation vs roger generation, which does work with Wano’s greater timey wimey themes. And was what most of her dialogue towards Kid and Law and Luffy.

Honestly her backstory is very sad. When it showed that the meal that she ate on her 6th birthday was the same meal she hunger panged for at the beginning of whole cake island it made me tear up

So I went back to chapter 432 to see if Big Moms name is ever mention and I'm surprised it's not cause I know in that episode in the English Dub he does mention Big Mom and Kaidos name. Also in that same chapter Garp tells Luffys Dragon said he saw him, implying he still had communication with him which is weird cause in the anime it sounded more like he heard from the report he heard Dragon helped him escape but in the manga, at least in the viz translation that Dragon told him directly

I don't mind Big Mom tbh or how she was handled in Wano I feel it made sense and was true to what we know of her she is effectively a child a very powerful one but a child. Without her children who are far more mature than her in almost every way, she's just that a strong child without her children she isn't really fit to be an emperor of the sea. Where Kaido even without his crew is fit to be an emperor of the sea. I also feel this is greatly reflected in how Kid and Law weren't considered emperor level not only in the way of they had to take her down with the both of them but both got shut down when directly faced by a real emperor. Where Luffy was able to win against Kaido and when Lucci said he didn't recognize Luffy as an emperor got shut up real quick to a point Zoro outright told him you aren't in control in the fight that he and Lucci are having. Big moms children having such high bounties is also a reflection of why her children are the reason she is still an emperor. I assume when she was younger she was a lot more deserving of the title by herself alone but now I feel it's directly because of her children and their power

ive been waiting for this video, big mom is easily my favorite villain in the series and one of my favorite characters too !! i definitely agree with what you said about her role in wano and i wish oda would have treated her with a little more respect but it isnt enough to bring down her character for me, plus i still love some of her wano moments (such as her interactions with otama in act 3) theres not really another character quite like her in any other series that i can think of, she exists in her own unique bubble and its so intriguing oh and say what you want but i think shes kinda cute, i mean look at her with that little umbrella :3

Wedding caku was the catalyst for me giving up on the anime completely. That's when I became a manga reader.

I sometimes think what would be if bigmom stayed. And we get the full kaido focus. And then get the fight blackbeard pirates against bigmom (minus katakuri not recovered), also showing an (former) admiral going all out and "win" in sense. And also most of them hurt and struggle hard against garp after.

It is the childish mindset that Big Mom maintains in adulthood that prevents me from taking her seriously as a villain. Wanting to recapture the happiest moment in her life (an apt description for her life goals, GLR) allowed her to be manipulated and utilized as a tool by ALL important figures in her life (excluding her parents). Carmel was going to trade her for a high price to the Marines; Streusen turned her into a super weapon for his own uses before she reached 18; and the REAL BRAINS of the Charlotte family, like PeroSpero, Mont D'Or, the Sweet Commanders, and especially Praline and Chiffon (defected to their new families after marriage, can't say I blame them) utilize her GLARING stupidity and focus on satiating hunger (the biggest primal driving force after libido) to further their own plans in their own time(s). I call Big Mom "raging pink kaiju witch baby" for several reasons but the biggest is her demonic hunger tantrums and her childish mindset being similar to the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. Also, the build-up to this villain was wonderful, and her backstory, actions and character quirks play well into the Whole Cake Island arc's major themes of illusion, deception, and toxic family relationships. Wow, first A plus territory villain since Arlong, I am surprised but at the same time, I know she fully deserves her place there.

Also, you said something crucial, which is that all the other Yonko are treated with the respect they deserve. Big mom doesn’t get that treatment, and seems to, a lot of time, be handled to the benefit of the straw hats. Some may say that it’s more so that the straw hats are strong/crafty enough to handle her, but I feel like we hadn’t seen enough from them by the time we got to Whole Cake to feel confident in that idea.

I kind of feel like Oda meant for her to go to the background in the way she did. It symbolized the passing of the torch to the new generation of Yonko.

Her musical number, especially the part about whether it's jam or blood, makes me reconsider if she is actually aware of being a cannibal.
